This was SUCH a sad song - heard it a million times growing up - and is just as relevant today with the epidemic of suicide among young people - who often feel unheard by their families --

Bobby Gentry is an American singer-songwriter who was one of the first female artists to compose & produce her own material. A lot of her songs were stories. Her biggest hit was in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe". Other songs are "Mississippi Delta", "Fancy", "Louisiana Man", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Sunday Mornin" (with Glen Campbell) etc.

Excellent song . One thing I like is the contrast between the smooth , relaxed musical arrangement and singing - and the tragic , eerie events while the other family members just go on with their meal .

If you've ever heard Reba do the song Fancy, which was a huge hit for her, Bobby Gentry was the writer and original singer of that song.

this song, acccording to Bobby, is a study in cruelty, the way the rest of the family just didn't care that the daughter really cared about the boy who died.

When this song came out, it's "disturbing" lyrics had a lot of people trying to figure out the mystery of what was thrown off the bridge and why Billy Joe had killed himself. Bobby Gentry was absolutly amazing.

For me, the word is foreboding. The strings and the introduction of the cello is certainly smooth, but it builds up to the revelation about Billy Joe jumping off the bridge.

There's actually not much to dive into her, as a solo artist. But, she was an extremely prolific song writer. She wrote many songs that became major hits for other artists.

This is Southern Gothic. At the moment I can only think of Delta Dawn and Angie Baby, both sung by Helen Reddy. I know there are more but I'm too tired to name them right now.

Ace, as someone said, I suggest listening to this again in your own time...While the music and vibe is peaceful, the lyrics are about a young guy whom committed suicide! I was waiting for you to talk about the storyline/ lyrics, but you didn't. Every other reactor that's done this has been taken back by the story in this song

This is pure country, not folk, Bobbie Gentry was telling a story just like nany southerners before her. This was a great dong with a Haunting melody from 1967

Bro this was water cooler dinner table talk over the whole country. What was this about. Everyone was trying to know the truth. It was just like who shot JR? But I'm dating myself. Anyway America cried over a possible tragedy for her and Billy Joe.
