  • This video shows the first loco sold by Lionel after the war. It was a reintroduction of the prewar 224. Lionel produced a second model with 2-6-2 wheel arrangement, the 675. Together with these two locos, I present the switchers which Lionel offered in the postwar period.

Thank you so much for all the excellent videos - i'm watching this with my dad and the first train you show was his first train on Christmas

Nice to see someone else who uses RCS track sections for their barrel loader instead of those OTC lockons. Those late prewar and early postwar 224s are good, dependable locos. Once they are cleaned and serviced, you can barely hear the motors when they run. Just the 'woosh' of the tinplate rails.

You didn't mention the 2026. It was a 2-6-2 similar to the 675. It was an 027 loco and was available in 1949. I believe it was the first Lionel train that my dad purchased which I inherited from him. It had a middle rail sliding shoe electrical pick up. It came with a whistling tender. As kids, we ran that loco so many times that the sliding shoe wore out by developing a wear hole. My dad replaced it with a piece of brass. It also saw many attempts at "flying" in the air as it rounded a curve at high speed. Still have the engine but unfortunately the cowcatcger broke off. I probably can re-attach it with epoxy glue.

The 2026 was also made as a 2-6-4, and he's already covered those. The later versions such as I have had roller pickups, easier to replace if they ever get worn down.

The 2026 which you have is an early version sold in 1948-49. It later changed to a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement and these were probably the majority of the 2026 models sold until 1953. I show this model in my video ´Mid-sized locos with a 2-6-4 wheel arrangement´. In my series of videos I do not claim to show all variants. I feel that it would be even too much and get boring. Sometimes I mention variants, but I also do not want to overload the text. You certainly have a rare collectors item and keep it running.

I ran one of my dad's engines off the train table and broke the pilot off and never owned up to it for 40 years. When my brother brought me a small box of what was left of my dad's trains I took it to a train guy to have him recent move up all of them and he did the same thing with the one with the broken pilot and it runs great and so I think I'm going to put a coupler on the front of it so I can double head on a train 🚂🚂🚃🚃

I am curious about these older engines. Do they have a DC motor? Are you using a Lionel transformer with DC output? Cheers.

All Lionel of the classic period have AC motors. You can use the same transformers.

Have you ever had any derailments in that ramp section?
    Cheers.

Sometimes I have to shoot the video more than one time, because these trains sometimes derail. That happens.
