she is just completely fascinating to listen to and watch. i am always impressed by people who can make some of the more esoteric buddhist teachings sound reasonable. it helps me wrap my head around them and understand them, even if i don't really share her beliefs. a wonderful interview.

This must have been tough interview for Dan. It must be challenging to scrutinize someone's claims and be respectful at the same time. She comes off as typical religious believer.

Regarding incarnation - if we can be born once why can't be be born again and again. I appreciate how Dan Harris questions why we think what we think in a non-judgemental way. We should not feel threatened by questioning our beliefs. Questioning was not encouraged in my Catholic upbringing as well as some of the "new-age" classes I have taken. Thank you Lama Tsomo and Dan Harris for keeping it real.

As Buddhists we believe in the continuation of the consciousness through many lives. Just as our form or body evolves from a form/material substance, our consciousness also comes from a similar substance. When we die that form/material doesn't just disappear, it continues changing into other form. An example of this would be a body decaying into soil. Based upon this perception we can guess the consciousness goes through a similar process. We can't prove this through science because science hasn't yet found a way to measure the consciousness. Enlightened beings like Buddha are actually able to see their past lives and there are documented cases of people having glimpses of past lives. As for the rest of us its okay to have some doubts. In the Buddhist path we will have doubts until we are enlightened. Reincarnation aside the Buddha's teachings can help us in this life. We can put the teachings into practice ourselves and see what changes.

How could you believe rebirth without knowing what the meaning of Lama. Lama is not a title. It is a degree person who can teach experience of mentel Development.

Your last sentence exactly contradicts the penultimate one. Title is something you get when you achieve a degree of education in a field.

“[The idea of] Reincarnation is such a barrier in terms of embracing Tibetan teachings” Dan Harris
So true. Glad people like Sam Harris are able to filter the gold from the superstitions of Buddhism.

Yeah and up until fairly recently the vast majority of people in the west believed that meditation is a practice that has no real benefit for them and just nonsense that people in the east do. It's taken off in a big way now because some scientists were open minded enough to start investigating meditation to see what the effects of it are. Perhaps at some point in the near or distant future reincarnation will no longer be categorized as nonsense and superstition (like meditation was for centuries).
And perhaps it will soon be known that advanced intelligent life not from planet earth has visited, observed and even interacted with some of us. No one is asking anyone to believe in reincarnation and ET visitation and interaction without sufficiently strong evidence to support the phenomenon but it also would probably help if humans kept an open mind and allow for the fact that these things might be true. In other words instead of calling something nonsense, superstition or untrue a wiser and mature position would be to say: "I don't know if this is true or not - I neither believe or disbelieve in this phenomenon."

Anyone who thinks that Charles Murray has anything to say is not a very good filter. It seems there is a racist hole in that particular filter.
