I think the most interesting thing about mmbn progression is how it sorta reflects real life from the early 2000s.
What I mean is, early in the series, and the anime, Lan jacked in to appliances using a cable. Wifi connection wasn't mainstream in the early 2000s either.
It wasn't until later in the series that jacking in to devices with a wireless signal became a thing. It just happened to be around the time wifi internet connection became the norm.

This game was pretty dark. Especially that one NPC who does the quiz side quest. A quiz champion or something died, but his regrets for someone to solve his quiz, possess a small child. Problem is he possess the kid for like 80 years, so when Lan beats the quiz and the quiz guy leaves the body, the kid wakes up as a very old man with no memory of what happened. Lost his family who are certainly dead by now and his whole life to a crazy quiz ghost.

As much as I love the Battle Network series, I loathe how it completely and utterly forgets previous characters. Shun comes back in BN3 and says like 2 lines of dialogue and that's it, never mentioned again. There's an entire arc centered around saving Mamoru and he also never comes back and is never mentioned again. Hell, I'm pretty sure they don't even point out how Gregar and Gospel are basically the same creature.

The review was pretty good so far, although a few things to note:
V2 version’s of Bosses are always in 1 location, although they are invisible. You have to defeat them before v3’s become random encounters. Also generally, each area will have 1 Boss Ghost Data in the region (Airman for Den Area, Quickman for Kotobuki, Cutman for Yumland, Knightman for Netopia, Magnetman for the early areas of the Undernet, Shadowman for the first part of the Undernet that you don’t need to access as apart of the main story, and Freezeman in the deepest part of the Undernet. The Secret Bosses, except Bass Deluxe stay in the WWW Area they controlled.)
Also I’m surprised you never mentioned the Field effects or specifically that the Dev’s must hate Freezeman as he takes 4x the damage from Elec attacks thanks to his Elemental Weakness + Field negative effect.
Also side note - Knightman can eventually get to your field, but he’s still very slow.

    • @FalcorRedDragon
      @FalcorRedDragon 3 года назад +23

I am surprised nobody mentioned this under this comment, but me personally didn't know some specific thing for a long time as well.
Soo... among all the SubChips there's a special one (and pretty expensive) that's called LocEnemy. When used, it raises the odds of the setup of the latest battle for some time, making it easier to farm specific chips. This can be used when player just met v3 navi somewhere in the internets to increase the amount of free attempts to beat the bestest chip out of this navi.
This makes v3 encounters not _that_ random as it might seem. But still more random than necessary.

    • @Megamanlanprime
      @Megamanlanprime 3 года назад +12

@@FalcorRedDragon there is another way to manipulate the odds as well - if you save and keep resetting the game after you find an encounter it’s more likely that you can guarantee that encounter (basically go LockEnemy, Save, go for a random encounter. What's more this crazy super villain would have seen everyone walk into the room, plug into his computer, and then have their navis run to megaman. Battle Network 2 was my first entry into the series, being one of my first GBA games, (my brother had the misfortune of getting Battle Network 4 first, lol), and although I started on a completed save file which made things confusing, the series definitely hooked me here. I'm glad to see that this entry was where they really figured the formula out, even if it has its flaws such as padding. It's nice to see someone taking a fairly in-depth look at not only a video game series I am massively nostalgic for, but even the specific game I hold closest in memory.
The whole atmosphere of the endgame area was so intense and awesome, that building was literally scary to approach, and yet I couldn't help but be drawn to it. The final boss ends up sticking out in my mind most, even if it's probably the final boss that gets talked about the least (despite its relation to Gregar and the expanded role it had in the anime, and the fact that it's just this creepy, vaguely monster-shaped mess of viruses that subverts its mundane appearance with its unstable shapeshifting and constant data barrage). Although as a whole, it feels like Megaman Battle Network 2 feels kind of forgotten, compared to just about everything that comes after-for good reasons, admittedly, especially considering Battle Network 3. I look forward to seeing a review on that nonetheless, as well as checking out more of this channel.

Battle Network 2 was a fine game, and my start to the series after watching a full let’s play on BN1. A solid story with welcomed improvements to the gameplay. But....BN2 definitely had issues with pacing and padding. So much so i had to use plenty of Savestates to get by this game....it didn’t help that I sucked at this game too.....(the ice part of the game was such a drag dude....)
Although, BN2 is good, these problems sorta bring the games down a little bit for me. I personally find 3, 5, and 6 to be the best games in the series, and they also happen to be my favorites.
BN2 is still pretty good though, and i respect it for all the improvements it made.

I find the padding in 3 way worse. I still think Battle network 2 is the best game in the series. It does everything right on top of having by far the best set of bosses in the series and despite 3 noticeable improvements on the game 3’s dungeons are either unmemorable or way too annoying and the change they made to the styles change mechanic in comparison to it’s predecessor bn2 which I found to be awful.

Also a side note, the ice area really does ruin what was almost a perfect game :/ Also ya ever notice how the main villian of Gospel was on the plane, like what was the plan if Lan failed? One thing I do like is that Capcom wasn't timid with the program advances. After all they do require you to run 3 chips who likely are not the best ones you have and often not use chips when you could have and likely also get a couple of frustrating bricks as you just can't get the program advance lined up. Then it also basically transforms 3 chips into 1 so if you miss that one shot that's 3 chips you likely had to work for down the drain.
With all those downsides the payoff should be really good and luckily it is.
Program advance really had the chance to be a completely worthless mechanic and quite a few similar games also have that. That there are very convoluted and difficult to use combinations that are supposedly really powerful but they almost are never worth it. Battlenetwork avoided that trap.

I'm happy for that. Because they force you to have sub-optimal battlechips and also not use them until you get them all lined up. Then you also need to memorize the program advance itself and you also can't afford to have it miss or be blocked.
I'm really glad Capcom wasn't timid with the program advances. It's something Konami really struggled with in early Yugioh. You often had a lot of convoluted ways to summon monsters but they were too timid to actually make those monsters powerful enough to be worth the investment.
A program advance usually needs 3 chips and also some other hassle so it needs to be better than 3 good chips are combined.

I wonder how many people over the years have played Battle Network 2 after having previously played Classic Megaman 2, encountered Airman.EXE and had Vietnam flashbacks.
    "Oh that!" Arashi said calmly.
At least in I think Battle Network 3 onwards there is a trigger location for Boss Ghost Data rematches before they start being random encounters so if you feel you aren't ready yet you can just avoid those locations. On a blind playthough though you'd never know where this location is.
Shadowman: Hmm...Well, these gospel music fans or something...
    Me: Excuse me, What?

Lan’s name wasn’t changed for no reason. It was changed because it now translates to lan light which is the LED on your Ethernet port that tells your network connection status. If the Japanese call that a net light then it’s localization and not translation, if they don’t then it’s just a much better name altogether.

My favourite childhood game. I think it took me over a year to complete. being 6 years old, not speaking English, and not having internet to help me. And with complete I mean beating the main boss. I couldn't get past the second WWW area. Good times.

Good thing you didn't try the sub plot with Bass/Forte and complete deck. Took me over 6 months to do that, and Bass V3 took at least half that time. Fuck that Aura!!!!!

Let's take a moment to talk about how POORLY-PLANNED FreezeMan.EXE's fight was (credit to RoahmMythril's LP). So, you have a boss that is Aqua element. Already you have 2x damage from Electric. Ice panels are Aqua element. Electric does 2x to anything on those tiles. This means the boss takes QUADRUPLE DAMAGE from Electrcity attacks. That 1k of health won't last long..

Personally I think it was intentional because I think some dev at Capcom realized "Okay playtests have shown that this ice thing was no where near as fun in practice so let's give the boss at the end an easy to cheese weakness to make up for that and give the player some much needed catharsis"

Actually, you CAN get the fast travel throughout the regular playthrough of the game. It's just available to specific NPC after certain scenarios. The problem is the game never hints at this whatsoever. You have to actively backtrack and choose to talk to random NPCs and hopefully stumble into them. I recall one fast travel option is unlocked after Quickman's scenario at the camp site as a reward for stopping the bomber, and another in Netopia square but I forgot when.

The best era in gaming imo, reuse engine, assets, characters and the likes, focus on the gameplay experience and story. Release games faster, more cost effective and create amazing games.
I might be biased though since Battle Network 2 and TLoZ Majoras Mask are one of my all time favorite games

Capcom still does that, with the resident evil 3 remake as well as some assets like animations being reused from sf5 for some marvel mobile game
