    I definitely think it would be a good idea to run all the shocks on the ledge with back to back laps since different linkage and bike geometry will make it feel different

    • @WOLFTICKVIDEOS
      @WOLFTICKVIDEOS  2 года назад +6

      It would be if we were doing a real side by side type comparison, but this was just to give our views and opinions with limited experience. We will probably never try to do much more with rear shocks, mainly because it's not our cup of tea.

    Been running a Box 4 since the beginning of 2020, only annoyance is getting the wheel on and off as the clutch is strong and doesn't switch off. The shifting is super smooth.

      I just installed the same 2 days ago. Upgraded from stock MicroShift 23 then to Shimano Altus then literally 2 days after installing the Shimano groupset my LBS convinced me to go with the Box 4 groupset instead, lol. So far so good, adjusting the back derailleur was a PITA because of the clutch but overall I like it. Nice smooth solid shifting.

    I’ve had the DNM for over 3 years, almost 4. It was around $70 when I got it though. Now I did have to cut down the hardware and ghetto press-fit the bushings, but it has been running strong ever since. It holds air forever too. I’ve taken it to lift access bike parks and accidentally on a couple black diamonds lol, great bang for your buck

      I bought the cheaper discontinue AO42AR, and that thing can''t hold air for the life of it. After about a half hour moderately bumpy ride, it loses about 15-20 PSI. And it wasn't due to the air pump equalizing the pressure between it and the shock. It's still on my bike, but I'm seriously considering a refund, and maybe going for a Rockshox Monarch R.

    Will be interesting to see which handles the big impacts the best. I have the DNM and am happy with it, (it did take a while to adjust but is really nice now and holding up to a 250lb rider) but on my other bike I have the Raidon with the rebound and single chamber and is not as plush but a bit more poppy.

    Im wanting to try the EXA RL. Im currently using DNM 38RC for 3 weeks now and it is fine as hell. Been doing 10ft drops, jumps and rock gardens with it and it doesnt leak air or oil. • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 2 года назад +2

    A good point is to start at the reccomended pressures, and in lease or decrease main pressure until it feels better, reduce or increase both, u til sag point and big hits feel better, until you feel its getting closer, if it feels too harsh decrease pressure in negative chamber, test rid eit tweak some more, you might end up running it below reccomend pressure or or have closer or further away from the reccomended on one or both.
    You just have to test for your self. Different bike, different rider.
    It does not take too much time to adjust it if you do it the right way.
    Adjusting and test rides same trail over and iver adjust ride anjust, test and so on.
    I would go for the shock with two air chambers. No question about it, u less it's a high end shock where it's not needed due to other tech. But for a air shock like this I would go for DNM, unless their tolerances and quality is bad. But I don't know about that. But a low budget shock with positive and negative chamber is rare, even a high end.

    Would love to see you try the DNM in the Ledge for purely selfish reasons, it is what I went with in my Ledge and would like to hear how you think it compares to the EXA, the DNM was the only in stock budget option available when I did my build :-)

    For the dnm shock with dual valves, sayif I need 90 psi for the main chamber and 50 for the negative, do you set the negative when the shock is fully compressed to get 50psi or do you set it to 50psi without it being compressed of do I set it to be 50psi when I'm sitting on the bike? I never understood it since it has top out if I do it in it's normal uncompressed position, but also feels wallow if its set when the shock is fully compressed, then aired back up when I set the positive chamber? Shouldn't I set it to 90psi same as the positive air chamber to keep it equalized?

    • @WOLFTICKVIDEOS
      @WOLFTICKVIDEOS  Год назад +1

      Hey brother, do them separately, no need to compress. The positive will act as a preload for the negative air chamber. Adjust within 2psi at a time

    I bought a DNM rear shock once to go on my wife's bike and ended up selling it to someone else. I did not like dealing with the positive and negative chambers. It overcomplicated it way too much. If you look at the "name brand" shocks like Fox and RockShox I don't know of any current models that you use a positive and negative chamber.
    I've mentioned this in the comments before but I would not skimp on a rear shock. It's just one of those things that if you're going to do it then it's worth spending the extra on. I have a RoxkShox Monarch on my XR Pro, and it's been well worth the $230 or $240 I paid.

    • @WOLFTICKVIDEOS
      @WOLFTICKVIDEOS  2 года назад

      I hear you on the positive and negative chamber deal for sure.
      As far as the way you feel on spending money for a better rear shock, everyone has something like that where they draw the line. We have had several people say things like, "if you aren't going to get a more expensive bike, why bother riding". The way we feel is if you don't have the money for the more expensive stuff, then get what you are comfortable with. By no means should people go into debt for this sport/hobby when there is so much budget stuff to play with.
      It's way more fun to be under biked, excited, and debt free than to be over biked, bored, and in debt. Obviously this applies to the bike as a whole and not just a rear shock.
      Thanks man👍

      @@WOLFTICKVIDEOS well said. I know a lot of people would say, in the case with my bike, why put a $240 shock on a $400 bike? But I thought it was a worthy upgrade, and it's turned out to be just that. I had a friend that also had an XR Pro, and he went with the Suntour Raidon shock, and he liked it pretty well.
      I don't know if my DNM shock was defective or not, but it didn't seem to hold air. The lockout did not prevent movement like my RockShox. Although to be fair it was on my wife's Mongoose Bedlam that is the old "Y frame" design, and I have read that is a very inefficient rear suspension design. Also, the DNM did not come with a shock pump, of course. But my RockShox pump would not work on it. I don't know if it used a different thread or not. I had to use an air compressor to put air in it (which I've read not to do). And I don't know if I had any way of checking the air pressure in it.
      Of the 3 you tested I'd probably go for the Suntour for simplicity alone.

    I had the dnm AO-42R and I switched to the AOY-36RC like the one in the video and I like the extra features the new one I have has, but it doesn't feel as plush as my old one. I tried adjusting the pressure for my weight and same with the negative chamber, but it just feels firm even with rebound set. I just want to know which one may be better at absorbing small and bigger bumps better, I really hate having the placebo effect in this scenario 😂😅

    this is so damn crazy, first you guys get the Satori deviant 2 handlebars which I got right before your video, then you guys get a Box 3 groupset and I literally just installed a Box 4 groupset on my GT Aggressor Pro a couple days ago, lol, great minds think alike. I'm really interested to see how you like that Box 3 groupset because so far I'm liking the Box 4. Oh also installed a Wolf Tooth 1x chainring and just got some RaceFace Chester pedals which I'll get tomorrow. Now I just gotta get a new wheelset (I still plan on using the affiliate links you sent me, and upgrade my front fork (although still rocking and loving the LUTU fork)

    I felt like when I watched the real time Exa form vid, you only seemed to like it on the big but in this vid you seem to like it more all round. Is it that it needed some time to break in or you were able to dial it in better? I'm the same height and weight as you but just ordered the Exa Form.

    • @WOLFTICKVIDEOS
      @WOLFTICKVIDEOS  2 года назад +1

      I think we have had time to really dial in air pressures and other adjustments, plus a little more time to break in don't hurt either.
      All three are decent, but not having too much experience with rear shocks definitely made it a bit of a learning curve to overcome. We still stand behind most of the stuff said in the original Realtime Review but we definitely feel like if we do any more rear shock reviews we will be better equipped for it.
      You really can't go wrong with any of these in a upgrade over stock on budget bikes atleast.

    Rear shock comparison and settings will be very difficult to review/judge unless you consistently do them on the same bike. The angles and lengths of the links will change the dynamics. The travel of the shock typically will not be the same travel as the rear wheel. Forks have a 1 to 1 ratio of travel compared to the wheel. But, how ever you review them, it will be informative and entertaining.

      It's actually old technology. SID with The Brain also. FOX has their version out if you can find one. It's like a spring loaded shaker in the secondary canister. It seems to work well. But it doesn't work well in 15f weather. Neither does the KS dropper post I have. I'm surprised that the Alivio brakes work well still in the cold (MT 200) . It's been hell around here because of the Canadian Bridge blockade. The government has blocked all the streets going accross the road the bridge is on.

    Talking about idiots talking about stuff that don't know what they're talking about... I bought some used thru axle wheels this past weekend. After a long email chain with a company in Taiwan, I have decided that it is not very budget friendly to replace all the bearings and get the QR conversion kit for those hubs. I will be purchasing a set of Koozer hubs off Amazon and teaching myself the art of wheel building. It'd be awesome to see you guys give it a try too! It would definitely be a challenge and the Wolfman would probably need several dad sodas to get through. As I probably will too haha
