    I for one would solve it by using Pythagore formula as ya have drawn the vertical 90 degree. Far easier and simpler..

      a is the distance from the center to a vertex, so 2a is the distance between the two vertices.

    2a is a positive distance because the distance has never being a negative

      the easiest way to see that relationship is to move the 2nd point (x,y) from the upper part of the ellipse to v2, then it's much easier to see how they are equal.
