Agree on the Prius. I do think they've done something special by making one that's actually appealing, but it's not an enthusiasts car. Also agree on the 300 SL being the all-time number 1. For something a bit more obtainable, I'd go with the SLS-AMG.
I just rented one from Hertz and it was an amazing car! Great looking and sips gas. ⛽️ It’s on my short list of cars when my lease is up. I’d do the plug in hybrid version.
The new Prius is amazing. Looks great, and has enough power to make it not boring. Not sure how you guys are getting so ripped off for batteries in the US but a 3rd gen battery here in Japan is well under $3k. They last around 300,000km.
He must remember costs from long ago. A refurbished 3rd gen battery with lifetime warranty and free install is under 2k USD here. Toyota OEM or aftermarket is around 2k plus install (maybe 2.6k total).
I've been driving Toyota since I was 16 years old I am 58 now I can proudly say I've never broken down on the road many of my Toyotas from the past are still on the road. Keep up the good work Toyota
Nice to see your kitty making an appearance. As Samuel Clemens said: "When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction."
I daily drive a 2001 Prius. Batteries failed from corrosion at 177k miles and after 22 years. I rebuilt the battery with year old cells for $900. No traction control, it’s a tank in the snow. 78hp, it gets to 70mph quickly with a top speed of 90mph and an average of 43mpg. It’s a good car. The new one still isn’t good enough to compel me to upgrade.
Nearly triple the horsepower, 10-15 more mpg, and massively upgraded safety systems makes for a big gap, though I commend what you do. Ironically I make the same argument that you do (that the new one isn't good enough to upgrade from my trusty old gen 3.), but that's with a gen 3 and not a gen 1. I'll likely do the battery change myself, which is $2200 and the install video was done meticulously by ChrisFix. The original lasts around 350k.
I understand your points about power, safety and efficiency but the first gen is good enough for me. I bought it from the original owner who drove it daily until the high voltage battery became unresponsive last year. The corrosion from the NiMh cells had eaten through the bus bars and voltage monitor lines. 34 of the 38 cells were still within operating capacity but I replaced them all anyways with lightly used cells. Then I repaired the wiring harness, installed new nickel plated bus bars, coated the terminals with corrosion inhibitor I’m expecting it to last another decade or so. Gen 1 is known to have MG2 stator wiring failure and burning, necessitating a transmission overhaul that I probably won’t be willing to repair when the time comes, so I’ll most likely upgrade when it fails. The only problem with the latest generation Prius, I don’t physically fit behind the wheel. I’m 6’6” and I tried to test drive one but there is simply no room. 2nd and 3rd gen is very tight as well. I fit in my first gen with two inches of headroom and two inches of knee room from the dash without a problem. Getting in and out is a breeze also since it’s taller and designed with a high roofline all around. One other thing I appreciate about it is the visibility - there are no blind spots and it feels like a convertible at times due to the thin pillars all around. As far as your 3rd gen batteries are concerned, corrosion will kill them before you wear them out since Toyota’s BMS does an outstanding job of preventing overheating and stress. If yours is higher mileage, I’d spend a few hours pulling your battery - safely and by the book of course - cleaning out the ventilation, removing corrosion and replacing the bus bars and nuts ($20 a set) as preventative maintenance. You might be surprised at how much corrosion is under the cover that will slowly kill your battery without any warning signs until the dash lights up like a Christmas tree with a nice red triangle at the top. 👍

I'm a car enthusiast and actually like the new Prius, especially in Prime trim. The new Corvette ZO6 or eRay should have been the Car Of The Year though despite their unubtainium status.
If the Corvette E-ray had a bigger battery, something like 30-40kwh, producing closer to the 200hp mark as in the Chevy Bolt EV and a tuned 2.7L turbo producing 350hp with a sub 10 gallon gas tank, itd be a bigger player. Give me the ability to drive it everyday electric only, give me 500+ miles of range on a small tank for weekend getaways, and give me the ability to be competitive on track days with every other corvette. Chevy admittedly put less effort towards this project to protect the Z06. I say if you can make it better, do it
The batteries in the Prius are about 1/3 of the price you are saying to replace. With the traction control you can easily turn it off with the doctor Prius app it's not hard
Hey guys, quick question. Is gmyt only going to be about cars? Will April be more than the side line reporter? No disrespect to Hoovie but I would love to hear her perspective on things from a first person as well. I love the channel, just want a lil more femininity lead off. Share the reporting!! Thanks for the channel!!
The Corvette E-Ray is not available for less than $100,000 as stated. Chevy website shows MSRP for a base E-Ray 1LZ is $104,900. A 2LZ is $110,400. A 3LZ is $115,850. Then there's the additional dealer markup.
A 115 thousand dollars for a bona-fide bad ass car that does 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds is not bad at all but prices will come down later on when the ZR1 comes out. Not only is it fast but it looks freakin amazing. Corvette did it right!!!
too bad dealers are already stating that they're only selling E-Rays for $100K over list. So no, it should not be car of the year. It's a terrible car because of low supply and dealer greed.
#1: good call on the Prius NOT being a COTY for any enthusiast publication (I don't think "Environmentalists Today" has a COTY). #2: Miss the back lighting in the center of your background. SR-72 almost gets lost.
Totally agree with Tyler ! The Prius has up their game and 100% better body design. But does not fit the Car of the Year status ! I will never get the jellybean comment out of my head… everytime I look at our present car designs .
I was born in 1963. Car of my lifetime is the car that fathered a whole new category of cars and car doors. The Lamborghini Countach. None of the aesthetics of “Supercars “ would be present as we know them without that car! Hell there might not be exotic looking mid engined Corvettes today without that car. It didn’t start the mid engine production car craze but it did make them super. And those doors, why do you think we call them “ super car doors”?
There's a big misconception regarding the "gas mileage" of the H1. The turbo diesel gets 13mpg stock which is better than most heavy duty pickup trucks. Mine gets closer to 15mpg. Combined with its on board 42 gallons of diesel capacity, it will go a looooooong ways before you need to refill it.
Just for a funny comparison, I drive a sporty Alfa Romeo diesel which consumes a gallon every 59 miles when I take it easy, and around 48 miles when I step on it. Since I am allready calculating: A gallon of diesel costs around 8 dollar over here, road taxes 152 dollars a month, insurance like 55 dollars a month. Greetings from the Netherlands!

Prius as Car of the Year? No way. E-Ray maybe. Dark Horse perhaps………..Lotus Emira. That’s my vote. Beautiful inside and out. Simple yet exotic. A true drivers car. The Drive should now change their name to The Commute.

What Toyota did back on the day with the OG Prius was brilliant! They probably could have made it look a lot like a Corrola and just stuff the new fangled electric stuff inside! But what they did was come up with this weird looking thing , probably had low drag coefficient! But what it really was , was a rolling advertisement so people would look and go .... what IS that!😊😊😊😊
While I agree that that Corvette E-Ray should have been the car of the year, I also don't agree with people dunking on the Prius. It's a good car, and it's a hybrid and not a pure EV (which is the best of both worlds... we're too far away from widespread EV infrastructure in the US in my opinion). Also consider that the price is super affordable while all the EVs are skyrocketing to be farther outside of the reach of the everyday American-- the average American does not have $100k to plunk down on an EV.
Disagree. They should have went full EV with a range extender. That way you can charge at home and go all electric for every day use then have the gas motor to assist in long trips.
The car already weighs 3,000+ pounds with a 45 electric only range. Batteries are still too heavy and take way too long to charge. The Gov is pushing full electric too fast. We haven't made full steel garages yet to try to contain one of these battery fires without burning your whole house down.
@@MrChipDouglas1why is everyone so obsessed with weight all of a sudden? A Prius is not a performance car. No one is going to take it to the track. An EV can weigh a thousand pounds more than a gas car and still be twice as efficient. That’s all people care about when they buy a car like this. Efficiency. I think Toyota should have gone full electric withOUT a range extender. Any more than 300 miles of range and you’re just paying for something you’re never going to use. Charge time doesn’t matter unless you’re on a road trip but any normal person is going to stop to eat or use the bathroom before they drive 4-5 hours anyway. Especially if they have kids with them. A fast charger takes 20-30 minutes. The same time it takes to stop to eat or take a piss and get some snacks. The rest of the time you plug it in when you get home and it’s full when you wake up the next day. More convenient than having to go to a gas station every week and definitely more convenient than having to wait around for hours while you get an oil change or a smog check. This will probably just wind up being a fleet car for taxi cab companies just like last Prius models did. Most normal people don’t want to have to wait around for oil changes and smog checks or go to gas stations now that they can just get an EV for the same price and not have to deal with those things anymore.
@@craigcampbell1843 I am talking about the battery weight. We are just not there yet batteries are too heavy and the range is inadequate. 300 miles? That's all in perfect condition, running the air conditioner or heater lucky to get 220 miles, hopefully the road is flat. 20 to 30 minutes is only if the charging station is open with no line so charge time so add whatever time it takes to move the line. I would rather wait for an oil change then pay 18,000+ in a new battery pack in a full electric car. There is pros and cons to both, and your batteries are just not there yet.
Yeah it has 200hp now with the similar mpg of its old underpowered self. I have a 3rd Gen and excited for the power boost but keeping my gas bill the same.

What Toyota did back on the day with the OG Prius was brilliant! They probably could have made it look a lot like a Corrola and just stuff the new fangled electric stuff inside! But what they did was come up with this weird looking thing , probably had low drag coefficient! But what it really was , was a rolling advertisement so people would look and go .... what IS that!😊😊😊😊
Toyota prious its a great car women loved them
E-ray is cool!
Toyota was smart to not go full ev. Good job.
Disagree. They should have went full EV with a range extender. That way you can charge at home and go all electric for every day use then have the gas motor to assist in long trips.
@@Nitrousbird #Diesel > #EV
I think it should go to the CT5-V Blackwing. Cadillac is going out with a bang
Hooray! A Neelix sighting!
Yep, you can keep your Lambo's ect. The GNX has always been my dream-car.
Definitely agree! Nice, possibly great, car. But it’s shouldn’t be CoY for an enthusiast magazine.(IMHO)
Yeah it has 200hp now with the similar mpg of its old underpowered self. I have a 3rd Gen and excited for the power boost but keeping my gas bill the same.
I feel like this was more of a Most Improved than a Car of the Year award.
On the next episode of good morning RUclips hoovie sells his z8 bmw to buy his future wife a gnx grand national
Choosing the Prius or any EV or Hypebrid = StuckOnStupid
I need to know why she called the Trans Am Phoenix a screaming chicken? This needs to be covered on the podcast 😂
Social media had a field day on that in the comments of the social media posts 😂
It is commonly known as the screaming chicken.
