  • 1982 WDIV News with Mike Wendland from Emily & Pooh Mixed Doubles Christmas Run in Detroit .
    Some background.
I am working on converting boxes of of 3/4" video from the 1970's-80's I have been storing for years. Video from the Emily Detroit Runs, Emily's Across the Street days and when Pooh and I and all our supporters began the "Say nice things about Detroit" movement in the 1970's.
My vision is a mobile exhibit of video, photos and much more from that era. Took a long time to find someone who had the equipment that would enable 3/4" video to be converted to digital.
I put a call for help on FB and Jim Warren who I did not know responded. He thought he knew someone, so he took a few of the #/4" and later gifted me with them now in digital.
Jim introduced me to Rob Smith and those boxes of 3/4' that took up lot of locker space are now on a thumb drive and I continue to curate.
Came across this one and in the spirit of Christmas 40 years later this is a 1982 Mike Wendland WDIV Channel 4 news report from our Emily and Pooh Detroit Mixed Doubles Christmas Run.
The event finished in Cobo Hall. We got the idea of the Mixed Doubles Run from our friend Fred Lebow, who was the President of the New York Roadrunners Club and had created a Mixed Doubles Run in Central Park we had participated in the year before.
Remember this was in 1982. Running events like this were very new and most running events we were creating in the streets of Detroit were difficult to get started however so many gave us encouragement to keep doing what we were doing in our efforts to encourage more people to get downtown and see why we felt asking people to "say nice things about Detroit" made sense and could make a difference.
I'm grateful to Tracy Irwin Smith, Detroit Historical Museum director of Collections and Exhibits for including the t-shirt from this Emily & Pooh Mixed Doubles Detroit Fun Run in the Detroit67 Roject archives. Proud when I saw Tracy's C-Span tour of Detroit67 at the Detroit Historical Museum and she gave our efforts a very honorable mention.
Like to add I have never forgotten the support we received from Mike Wendland , WDIV Channel 4 and others at the WDIV back in the day.
If I recall, Emily's Across the Street was an official headquarters for their "WDIV Go For It" baseball jerseys they created & we did some fun TV commercials together from Emily's.
