  • July 19 on The Story: After Oregon voters passed Measure 110 in 2020, decriminalizing simple drug possession, a group of researchers at Portland State University launched a three-year study to track how it was going. Last year they released their first report, focused on law enforcement perceptions of the measure. In short, they were not big fans - blaming Measure 110 for hampering their ability to police proactively and investigate other crimes. The PSU researchers just released their second report, which takes a closer look at law enforcement data. What it shows is that the impact of Measure 110 on policing was not nearly as significant as it's cracked up to be, and many law enforcement metrics were on the decline well before drug decriminalization went into effect.

These charts seem to ignore fluctuations in officer staffing levels which would drive the absolute counts the report relied on.

Kind of hard to impact anything if you don't bother showing up. Have you every tried calling portland police? I have. Every single time "we aren't able to respond to that". This of course is for a machete wielding individual using meth on springwater. Another time it was for an out of control fire under a bridge (propane tanks exploded the next day). A third time for guy trolling back and fourth on his bike holding a really big stick, with a chain drilled into the top, at the end of the chain was a nasty looking chopsaw blade. You can't make this crap up.
