    Monica Barbaro Acceptance Speech
"Hi, thank you so much. This is my first official award ever, so thank you, thank you. Oh God, I don't know what to say. Thank you to the HCA. This is so exciting, and what an incredible honor to receive a breakthrough performance award. Film critics and journalists, you play such an important role in our industry. You are a vital link between the work we do and the audiences we hope to reach. You challenge us, you keep us honest, and you champion us.
Thank you very much for that lovely intro. I just feel so lucky to be an actor and to be part of this community. So, thank you for your passion and integrity and your commitment to uplifting the profession of storytelling. Thank you for this award. It just feels very surreal to be accepting recognition at all, let alone for portraying someone as extraordinary as Joan Baez.
When our lovely director James Mangold emailed me with the subject line "Joan is yours," I was elated but also struck by the weight of the responsibility. Joan is not just an incredibly talented musician; she is a living embodiment of resistance, a voice of truth, and an artist who has been at the forefront of some of the most defining movements in our recent history. Stepping into her shoes was daunting. But the more I learned about her and sought to understand the complexity of her spirit, her relationship with Bob Dylan, her family, and the world around her-and not to mention the complexity of her voice and the nuanced weight she gives to every song-the more she enlightened my existence as an artist and as a person. I feel very grateful to her for that.
I've been processing the word "breakthrough," and I think it's easy to get caught up in this idea that there will be some single moment-like one job or one performance or film character-that'll be a threshold you cross through, and then it all happens. But what I've come to realize in many years of work is that there are many breakthrough moments throughout a career, and they come in all different shapes and sizes, even in the classroom sometimes. Many of them no one will ever even know about, but all these moments have in common that they're the beautiful result of a persistent, ongoing process of stepping out of your comfort zone, learning, growing, letting go of shame, and taking risks.
If I may be so bold, I hope I can encourage anyone-budding actors, artists, craftspeople, anyone out there who's waiting for some big breakthrough moment-just keep going, keep creating. In the meantime, I think I've kind of needed to hear this throughout my career here: recognize along the way all of what you've already accomplished, and offer yourself the gift of that recognition. Eventually, it'll be super extra special when someone else recognizes your efforts with you and connects with what you've created.
Lastly, in the spirit of recognition, let me just say that none of this particular beautiful moment would be possible without the support and efforts of so many people. Thank you to Searchlight Pictures and everyone there; to our brilliant director James Mangold, thank you for your email, your guidance, and for always being such a fierce advocate for your actors. To the extraordinary cast of this film, we're all out here promoting our film right now. Hopefully, they're all asleep by now-it's been a long day. Timothy, Ed, Boyd, your dedication and passion are absolutely contagious. I feel so fortunate to be on this ride with you guys.
To my team, my family, and my friends, your belief in me, especially in moments where I've desperately doubted myself, your patience with my incessant self-deprecation, and your willingness to laugh along with and at me make my world go around. Thank you for softening the blows and sending the wins off with fireworks. I love you guys. Thank you so much for this award, my very first, and I'm just deeply honored. Thank you."
