Subaru BRZ "Train Horn" Overview and Demo

  • This is a video walk-through of the "train horn" installation in my Subaru BRZ. This is a kit from Hornblasters (www.hornblasters.com), specifically the 'Conductor's Special 244 Nightmare Edition'. The major components are a 2-gallon air tank, Viair 444C compressor, and the Shocker XL horns (4 trumpets.)
    To skip to the sound comparison, jump to the 5:00 mark. I honk them once at the far end of the lot, and again half-way back to the camera.

    lol! Love these horns, a bit scared of the placement, should hide them up under the bumper in the right or left side crazy loud even there! So you can not have them under the hood. and you can add cool bits under the hood. your also about 14 the way there to put air ride on the car! Love the switches goes with the aesthetic of the inside.

    Beautiful sound but sooo much work!!! I own an 86, same car, same wimpy stock horn. Was thinking of putting the 4 note GM/Cadillac horns in but have to figure out how to wire them up, certainly not as involved or sophisticated as your monstrous setup but I imagine it would serve the purpose.

    • @seriesblueadventures9832
      @seriesblueadventures9832  5 лет назад

      The wiring for the 4 note horns isn't bad either. I had those previously (if you didn't see that video.) Just run a new lead from the battery, and to a relay. From the relay, you can power all four of the Caddy horns. And then all four horns need to be grounded somewhere. Trigger the relay with the existing horn lead. Then just find a place to mount the horns. I mounted them behind the passenger side fog light area as there was lots of space, but that's an enclosed area and wound up muffling them.

    • @a.o.647
      @a.o.647 5 лет назад

      @@seriesblueadventures9832 Do you still have the video of the 4 note horn? I thought about this train horn setup for mine but it seems high maintenance plus I don't know the street legality of it if I plan on using it often. I just need something that will get attention on the interstate by the careless drivers and truckers who don't pay attention to small horns with their ear buds jamming out to Celine Dion, Pussycat Dolls, and Spice Girls! That's what I imagine they listen to. :)

    Hey SeriesBlue, how many honks (1sec) do you get out of the 2 gallon tank at which pressure?

    • @seriesblueadventures9832
      @seriesblueadventures9832  4 года назад +2

      A honk is generally more like less than half a second in length (1 second or train horn is when someone ROYALLY fucks up, lol) but I'd say you only get 2-ish seconds before they really begin to fade, and the drop-off happens fairly quickly. They only take 60 seconds to recharge at that point though. The tank runs at 150 PSI fully charged. If honk time is important to you, my old setup used a 5 gallon tank instead of a 2 gallon, and that one gave you a LOT more honk time. Space was more important for me in this case, but while 2 seconds doesn't sound like much, I've never "run out" of horn when it was needed. 2 seconds is several blasts of the horn.

    I just got a Suby and I love virtually everything about it besides the horn. Time for the train upgrade. Btw, how many people have you given coronaries to? Btw, can you use the compressor for other uses like inflating tires and cleaning debris?

    • @seriesblueadventures9832
      @seriesblueadventures9832  Год назад

      Just now seeing some of these comments so just answering anyway: I've had a bit of fun spooking my friends, but I generally don't go around honking them as a "prank" on random strangers. I honestly don't honk them very often; only when some moron properly deserves it, lol.
      And yes, I added a quick connect coupler to the tank, and I keep a 30 foot air line coiled around the spare tire in the trunk. I use it to top off my tires, and have even run air tools to break a stubborn bolt loose here and there (the tank isn't big enough for anything more than a quick blast with an air tool, but that's often times all I've needed.)

    • @seriesblueadventures9832
      @seriesblueadventures9832  5 лет назад

      Anything is possible with enough clever engineering! I think the hardest part is finding a spot to mount the horns themselves. I imagine the C is very tightly-packaged vehicle, with not a lot of room to spare underneath. Perhaps a 3 or 2 horn system, with smaller trumpets would be easier to squeeze in there for you.

      Just saw this comment, so answering for the benefit of others since I assume you sorted yours already. I just cut a hole in the existing grommet in the firewall where the main wire loom comes through and jammed it through there. Not too hard, just annoying because the line doesn't flex easily and it was a bit of a PITA to bend it through there while laying in my back under the dash.

      It was... not cheap, lol. The kit itself is like $600. Then there was just the cost of the wood for the base, other random bolts and things, and buying a jigsaw... and a router... and then the wiring harness I made, so all the wire, the fuse/relay box, the tools to crimp those, etc...
      So yeah. I needed something to keep me busy over the winter. Those switches and that wiring controls other things too, though.

    People wanting to do this to their cars, DON'T, it's illegal in all states and you'll end up getting a stupid ticket like I did...
    Plus its dangerous. Honking your horn isn't supposed to distract everyone on the road within a quarter mile of you!

    • @seriesblueadventures9832
      @seriesblueadventures9832  3 года назад +1

      You aren't wrong, although the closest I've ever gotten to a ticket was when I honked it for a cop and he called all his cop buddies over and had me honk it again :P
      As for using it on the road, I find it much safer than a normal horn, because people these days tend to just ignore regular horns since people use them so regularly (especially in larger cities where the cabs and Uber drivers use them incessantly). They won't ignore a train horn, though, so if you need someone to stop doing something immediately, the train horn gets the job done!
