As an exhaust fabricator (Muffler Moron) for the past 14 years here in New England i clicked on this expecting a good chuckle but i was really impressed with this. Im used to having to redo what other mechanics call a "fix". But you took the time to do it properly. Love your channel!
It's been a few years since I saw this video. I recently picked up a '95 ranger and am finishing putting a new engine in it, with exhaust work needed too. I was finishing the exhaust work last night, realized it's almost exactly the same job you did here.... and between watching this video and owning this truck, I have since picked up the same Lisle expander kit and used it to do almost exactly the same repair last night -- no flange behind the cats, and installing a new muffler after cutting the flange off the new intermediate pipe (using the old intermediate pipe to bridge a gap in the new system). Thanks as always for the great content. Lessons from this video a few years ago have stuck with me and resulted in a better repair than I would have otherwise done on my new-to-me Ranger
Please don't stop doing videos.lots of people watching these videos. Thay have helped me with depression and loneliness. I don't think you realize how good good you are.
Awesome welding, looks like a machine did it. And a great tutorial on brazing. When I went to trade school we did a week long welding course in our year long auto course, their were 2 classes, the one I was in got an instructor from England who worked in the ship yards, he taught us mig welding, stick welding and oxy/acetelene cutting, while the other class, got an instructor from Virginia who was just a welder, but he taught them mig welding, brazing and oxy/acetelene cutting. I've never actually got a chance to gas weld, have seen it done a few times, never with actual brazing rod, just with coat hanger wire.
Nice welding man. I remember doing exhaust work on my crusty old Maxima without proper equipment. Had rust flakes in my eyes and smelled of WD40 for weeks. Never again. Damn rust belt life.
i remember the day getting in time places smelling like fried chicken lol.hell I am a certified welder with 50 years of experience your welds look better than mine.i kind of got away from sheet metal welding working as a heavy duty diesel mechanic ,refrigeration, maintenance K
You're welding looks great. I like the way you try to save your customers money, I'm sure that's why they keep coming back. You are definitely the Man for all jobs. Great video as usual. Thanks for what you do.
So glad to be back in the States so I can watch SMA! I could write a paragraph of comments but I'll just say I was entertained and learned something. Love the work brother.
My era teens (1950s) wanted "Gutted Mufflers". I use to use coat hangers to gas weld old mufflers after they were cut open and gutted. Coat hangers worked well.
@SouthMainAuto Nice to see a classic video from 7 years ago! Thanks for linking it in today's upload. Miss Sheeba what a beautiful dog. You were definitely more relaxed back then maybe less jaded? Lol! Who can blame you. Not many people have consistently done entertaining and informative videos even close to as long as you have! Pretty impressive to see you still pumping out the quality. Back then I was way too busy to be anything but an occasional viewer. Would love to hear you talk about the changes you've experienced over the years. Keep posting hand picked classics for us to watch. I bet the majority of current viewers haven't seen any of these! I can do it if you can do it!
I bought a 1994 xlt rice ranger (Mazda) for $600.00. It has the 4.0 OHV. I Replaced the clutch and exhaust system, including two mini-cats in series. It passes Utah emissions inspection perfectly. A new clutch and cooling system overhaul and it works perfectly. Odo says says 260,000. Apparently the 4.0 OHV V6 is long lived.
I've owned an expanding tool for 50 years now. I've not used it in 15-20 years, keeping it 'just in case.' Amazon is down at the moment so I can't see the hi tech one you used. Another fine video, Eric!
Mufflers and tailpipes seem to last a lot longer than they did before the days of catalytic converters. I certainly agree with your point about oxyacetylene -- as slow as it is, it's kinda fun to have a go with gas. You made a lot of excellent points here.
Good review Eric. I've had that Lisle kit in both my Amazon and eBay carts for a year or so now. I want to get it to put a new exhaust on my old '85 GMC short-bed half-ton. Looks to be a good piece of kit! Also, great job explaining the alternative way of welding up the exhaust with the torch and filler rod. I'm a fan of this type of video. It demonstrated a great tool under REAL WORLD situations in a REAL shop. It wasn't just a plug for a product or a manufacturer like other RUclips mech. videos do. Most importantly, I think the viewers (including myself!) learned a good bit about the process. Keep 'em coming! One of these days I'll either send up some tools or make a donation to thank you and your family for putting this all together for us. Good job man.
Coat Hangers! Good cheap gas welding rod. No "pops" from oxygen too high (Eric knows much more than he leads on) Gas welding is much like other welding, amount of heat & how fast to move. Metal takes on a shine when its molten & fluid. Keeping the tip of the inner flame on the rod aiming in the direction of travel gives nice welds. This keeps the rod always melting as enough heat is applied to whats being welded to melt the surface and not burn through. Good show Mr O!!
Sir, you could be a shop foreman at ANY large repair facility. Owning your own business is far better, but your ability far exceeds your current arrangement.
+mrexecutive1 I know. One week hes doing full on rocket surgery with Ivan on some obscure electrical issue. Next thing hes welding exhaust or swapping an engine. Its never boring when you run your own shop. Especially when every other shop for 30 miles dumps what they can't fix on you. lol
I like your videos, the gas welding was helpful too, I am a retired HVAC tech and have a torch which I used for brazing, but haven't welded for many years.
Nice bead. After watching you pulling broken studs with the welder, I think I'll buy maybe a harbor freight one to play and practice with. Great videos!
He's just showing off the first time he uses this fancy tool. Good job! I bet Amazon is nearly sold out of this pipe expansion set. So many orders, it crashed the website. He swings a hammer better than many carpenters.
I was a welder/ fabricator for 15 years , some of the guys that called themselves welders couldnt have done as good of a job as you did with the oxy/ acetylene welding. Im impressed , maybe they were better mechanics. Prolly not.
You will have that tool forever had mine about 8 years works great, thankfully my boss likes to buy tools now we have a pipe bender it is great and can make other stuff with it,a lot of money but worth it.
I'm way far behind on your videos Eric. We are all lucky to have them.....for free! I think the best thing you teach is proper thinking. all the best to you and your family. Thank you for your channel.
On that exhaust pipe expander: you could put the TOOL in a vise and that way you wouldn't crush the pipe. Maybe grind some flats on the tool's large collar to better hold it in the vise jaws. Love the vids.
+deepsquat600 ETCG threw himself under the bus. If he didn't do hack job work, people might take him seriously. He isn't even a tech, all he does is make RUclips videos.
+jay “clowning loud” dogg Oh Yeah ETCG Is far better than I will ever be. Shoot he is ASE MASTER. ACURA MASTER, HONDA MASTER. I can only hope to be as good as him someday and have his mechanical repair skills...
+brian0918 he did used to work for acura. The problem I have with it, he is making "instructional" videos on stuff that he as never done until making the video. So how can he be teaching the right way to do something if its his first time.
Some things to remember re welding; 1. Use gauntlets and cover up exposed skin, not only so you don't burn your arms, etc, but arc welding throws out a sh1t ton of UV which can cause and/or seriously increase your risk of cancer 2. Use a proper welding helmet, it prevents arc eye, protects your face from stray sparks, etc, and again prevents your exposure to high levels of UV that arc welding crates. 3. If you are welding galvanized pipe, always remove the zinc oxide coating from the area you're going to be welding, ensure proper ventilation, and wear a respirator, as the zinc oxide fumes that are liberated can cause serious health issues and even death
Like the new editing style. Nice repair! Even here in the south with no road salt Ranger exhausts rot out. It just wouldn't be a Ranger without an exhaust leak.
I've fixed a lot of power steering pumps that cracked with that method back in the early 80s and we used to gas weld cracked radiators before they was plastic
We keep it old school with the oxy/fuel welding. It's so much easier to get into tight places to weld with than a mig. And the only stainless we work with are tips of course, and it can be a little tricky to weld. But with a little practice and keeping most of your heat on the pipe and you'll be good to go.
I "hung" quite a few exhaust systems "back in the day" ! I never would believe that you could expand those pipes that far without them splitting at the seam ! I hope your customers appreciate you "going the extra mile" to fix their cars and at reasonable prices. (Junk yard shopping for that electrical connector and still getting the vehicle on the road without one.) In this case, most shops would tell the customer they need a new cat !
had an "87" Ranger up in Michigan, it needed a "cat back" every year. took it to Florida, never needed exhaust work after that. I drove the truck for almost 18 years and it was running when I sold it.
I'm going to have to take a trip up there I have so much work that needs done on my truck eric you ae the best one for the job thanks for the vids well done
Yep, I've taken 6010 rods and burned off the cellulose with the torch then gas-welded with em. Worked in a pinch for what we needed! I've used a coat hanger too but we don't talk about that repair. ;)
John Baugh - Yep , me too . But those wire coat hangers are getting about as scarce as hen's teeth ; and those damned plastic hangers don't work very well for torch welding .
Sorry you had to hear the comments regarding safety . We all live on the edge sometimes when we're trying to get it done and ship it out . Your MIG welds are primo and your gas welds are good enough . They'll hold and no ones going back under to give it a 1 - 10 rating . You run your shop just fine .
thanks for another great video....all the detail an explanations are awsome ....feel like i cud tackle a job like this for myself now...except for the welding part
+CR2504life What's nice got to do with it? Want to bet me ETCG hasn't done the same at some point? But regardless, A little harmless and caring ribbing now and again is good for the bowels - it gets the old crap out and gives your center a new and fresh start. A little bit is harmless and healthy for everyone now and again. Of course nobody like full on running drippers so ... manners are important and the amount is relative.
I was getting so worried the video was almost done and I didn't see any brake clean. thank God it made an appearance before it ended I would of thought that this was an imposter SMA channel! got my daily dose of "well there's your problem" giving it the beans and the fan favorite welding the ball joint! lmao
Thankfully, most new cars come with SS exhausts. I did not have to work on the exhaust on my 2006 Sonata until 2016. And I just traded in a 2011 Equinox that had never needed exhaust work.
Eric O. Great Video! With the advancements in coatings and particular undercoatings is there anything that can be applied to vehicles in the rust belt.
I wish they would give two expanders so you can hold one in the vise and the other to expand the other end. Don’t know if they can do that but it would be nice.
i really enjoy your videos you think out of the box and you use your brain I wish you were in Missouri because I sure would take my car to you when it needed to be fixed thanks for your videos and keep it up

impressed with your welding abilities being able to run a continuous bead on a tissue paper thin pipe and one side of the joint rusty is awesome
"Welding some ball joints?"
🤣🤣🤣 Even Mrs. O knows about the "other" Eric's shenanigans.
Doing what you love while being fed by the one you love. Sounds like an awesome life.
I do tractor/trailers all day and I look forward to your vids every time!! Good job and thanks for entertaining us at the same time!!!
Outstanding thumbs up video production. At 28:51 priceless..."What are ya doing Mr. O, welding any ball joints there?" Nearly fell off of my chair.
+Sandbag1300 Yeah she is a funny girl
Another great repair video Eric O. Thanks for all the help you give to the DIYer. I'm liking that pipe expanding tool and your tips on gas welding.
come on now Mrs O Eric is a trained professional he would never weld ball joints together great video as usual
Your mig welding is really good Eric, wish mine was half as neat.

better kit than I own [a powerbuilt]never thought to expand to fit in a larger pipe, learned something new, thanks
I like your videos, the gas welding was helpful too, I am a retired HVAC tech and have a torch which I used for brazing, but haven't welded for many years.
I bought the same kit from snap on we have a pipe bender/expander at my work but this comes in handy aswell I love it
Nice bead. After watching you pulling broken studs with the welder, I think I'll buy maybe a harbor freight one to play and practice with. Great videos!
Nice fun video!
Who needs Brake Clean when you have Mrs. O!!
Rollin in the floor with the "brake clean"! Love it bud! Keep em coming!

Great job on the camera angles here, particularly when you were welding. Thanks for showing gas welding for curiosity's sake too.
What a baller, gorgeous bead with no gloves.... tough friggin dude
Had a few pipe stretchers since the 70's...great tools.
My Grandpa was an expert gas welder, as well as a master old school mechanic. His favorite filler rod was straightened coat hanger wire. lol

Eric O, you should try laying on the ground installing a muffler system or installing a new throwout bearing in a truck, not real fun.
The main drawback with gas welding is the large heat area- whereas MIG is very localized heat.
