    The books explain it better (for most of the things you comment on), but Names (in capital) give you a measure of power over beings, if you get it the exact saying of it correct, hence him using his full Name.
    Would also add Harry would agree with Linkara, a gun is something he generally uses, but his is stuck locked up in his office after the Scorpion.
    And they don't use magic people to kill people who step out of line, they use swords :) Use of magic for violence against mortals can be corruptive in the Dresden Files universe, hence the use of Swords and guns.

    • @Shadethewolfy
      @Shadethewolfy Год назад +1

      Really any sort of "black magic", even if its used with the best of intentions, can become corruptive. I'll be vague here for a bit because this happens in book 8.
      A future character uses mind control to try to get two of her friends to stop doing drugs, but as one of the seven laws is to not tamper with another's mind...
      Her act also starts to slowly corrupt her.

    Cause of something Linkara brought up, I should say as a huge Dresden files fan, Harry Dresden IS supposed to be a perverted sexist who grows out of it, and you can tell in books he does stop his language but when he loses a woman he loves and goes around white court stuff (who are extremely sexual in nature) he’s at his worse in narration.
    Other characters in Dresden files who have their own POV have ZERO perverted or sexist comments… then again one of them is Murphy, a woman.
    Also the reason Morgan loves saying Dresden’s full name is because he loves mocking Morgan in how he knows his full name, which is a big deal among magic users.

    Funnily enough, dresden DOES use a gun for some good shots against more magical creatures than just some black wizards. Also about the film cannister, objects in the physical realm just breaks and disrupts the magical field the circle is generating, that's why he was able to do that.

    The Morgan baka joke is actually kinda appropriate. Later in the books Morgan says his issue with Harry is less that he's a potentially evil wizard, just young and inexperienced. Then a few stories later we see Morgan actually feels a little sorry for Harry as he knows about Harry's mother, the circumstances around his birth. Which together mean most of Harry's life is an uphill battle.

    @VampByDay Год назад +1

    Hey man, glad to see you finally finished this one up. Been waiting for you to finish the first Dresden Files.
    Couple things to answer your questions (like I did last time).
    1) Morgan has been alive for around 150ish years, and has seen a lot of wizards go bad. In the Dresden Files, power tends to corrupt, much like Victor Sells, so he sees a guy that's killed with magic, he's 90% sure that guy is already lost. That's why he has such a hard-on for killing Harry.
    2) Magic tends to not have a lot of agency on its own, you can't really 'program' magic to do a lot. So you can maybe take direct control of a scorpion, or have it attack any life-force it senses, but telling it to attack 'everything but me' is a bit beyond what magic can normally do. Victor basically aimed them at Harry and said "Attack" and thought he could just unsummon them when needed. That's why they attacked him, because he was too busy to directly control them, and basically had too much on his mind to calmly and rationally use the spell to unsummon them.
    3)It's explained in the books that there are a few ways to do magic. If you are planning on pulling off a big mamma jamma spell like killing someone with ritual magic using a storm as a power source, what you gotta do is make a circle to build up and trap the magic while you shape it. This kinda acts like a 'bubble.' You can then 'pop the bubble,' when the spell is ready and the shape is all set up and the magic will do what you want it to do (like explode someone's heart.) If someone disrupts the circle (pops the bubble if you will) early, then all that magic goes everywhere without being fully shaped and does things like sets your house on fire. Technically all magic works like that, but the easier spells can be done by just imagining a circle and are so fast that there's not much time to 'pop' your opponent's bubble.

    16:35 The magic circles in The Dresden Files function basically as force fields that block the passage of magic and supernatural creatures. These circles will fail if anything manages to cross their threshold while they're active. Mortals (ie. anyone who isn't sufficiently supernatural), due to reasons both too complicated and spoilery to explain, are immune to many magical effects, including circles. Since harry (a mortal) made an object (the film canister) pass through the circle, the circle's effect was dispelled.
    The "Hurled by a mortal" bit specifically is about establishing the edge case that tools and objects will also count as supernatural or mortal depending on who's using them (ie. a ghost cannot escape a circle by throwing a rock across the circle's threshold, because the rock would be considered a supernatural attack since it was initiated by a supernatural creature).

  • @Shadethewolfy
    @Shadethewolfy 9 месяцев назад

    On the subject of how he disrupted the ritual with a film canister: The book explains that the reason that works is because it was something real (as in, physically real, not something created by magic) crossing the boundaries of the circle, thus breaking it and unleashing the energies within. It's the same reason why someone walking out of a circle in later books also breaks it.
    It's also how he was able to break a circle in a much later book. Though that time involved a lot more destruction of property. I won't go into details because spoilers for Small Favor, but needless to say Harry was QUITE HAPPY to destroy the circle in question.
    If you know, you know.

A lot of the nitpicks (😆) you had were kinda the books fault (ie the jacket/desperado thing) I'm also surprised you didn't mention about his car being called the blue beetle in this review as you missed it last time. I'd give the comic bonus points/forgiveness for minor issues just due to the high accuracy. The artist change (even if he's not a favorite) also kinda makes sense as there was more magic depiction so that style fits.

    To explain the film real thing, I think it's because the whole "magic and technology under a certain age don't mix well", I can't remember if it's a matter of how complex the technology is or how new it is (with what I remember of Dresdenverse magic, it could one or the other, or both) it's the reason Harry drives an old Beetle around no problem (side note, it's not painted like that because Harry wanted it like that, it's more that Harry is stuck using whatever replacement parts he can find since he's stuck using the older stuff, and he can't exactly spend the money to repaint it), if he tried using a newer car, well one of the better outcomes would be the car suddenly deciding to not work. If the tech is over a certain age/less complicated it should work, in book's Harry is actually able to get an xray done of himself once his friend started using an older machine (as in so old it was considered an antique iirc), this is why yes Harry can actually make use of things like phones and guns, preferably older simpler ones but still. I'm guessing the film real coming in contact Victors spell screwed it up, especially since Victor's magic isn't really complicated or sturdy, it's just really powerful, even something that small giving the slightest bit of disruption was enough to throw things off, have to reread the book to be sure though. It's just one of the interesting quirks of Dresdenverse magic.

    Little disappointed Linkara didn’t show the spread of Harry using magic to levitate; it’s pretty awesome.
    The comic did a great job adapting the story, hitting the Emotional highpoints as well as the action ones (in particular Harry’s temptation to use dark magic and his ultimate rejection of that temptation because a Wizard “uses his power for knowledge and defense. Never for attack”).
    The book does explain the film canister thing a little better: throwing a solid object across Victor’s magic circle disrupted the magical energies. I think the comic said that, but it could have been more clear about it.

    It's kind of a trip seeing this super early version of Harry Dresden, the stakes are so much smaller and you can believe he makes these kinds of mistakes. The same with Murphy, she clearly thinks she's in a different genre and doesn't realize what she's in for just yet.

    so about the pronunciation of "Gentleman" Johnny Marcone's name: Word of God states that it's pronounced as a dual-syllabic word (Mar-cone) as opposed to tri-syllabic (mar-cone-ee)
    To be fair, it's a fairly common mistake to make; it was a mistake that James Marsters made during his narration of Storm Front, as well.

    You really need to read the novels. They are one of the best series I’ve ever read. They don’t need to be comics; rarely does a narrative create such vivid mental images. Reading them is like watching a movie in your head. Skip storm Front; or don’t, whatever. Shit gets crazier and crazier every installment and the first chapter usually recaps most of what you need to know.

    15:32 Oh man I loved descent as a kid, I should really dig it up again and play it! I recognized that ship the instant you pulled it out. You going to stream descent? What's your favourite weapon? I like the Spread Cannon but the homing missiles were often the best, though the Quad Laser upgrade late in the game was worth keeping. Vulcan cannon would be more fun if I could find more ammo for it but the upgraded Gauss cannon from Descent II was easily the best. Flash missiles always blinded me and I hated the thief bot that stole weapon upgrades. I play with a joystick and wasd controls with button for rising and falling, full 3d movement games are so rare.
    Sorry just had to gush for a minute since I rarely remember those games
