    I bought my first CB in 1964, but have been away since 81', 3 years ago I got back in with an import Stryker SR 955 HP.

    I live in western Canada where local CB use in general, especially AM mode has been nonexistent for decades . In that case you'll need a SSB (sideband) capable radio like a Galaxy 959, Cobra 148, or other SSB types for your first CB for those long distant Groundwave or skip contacts.

      Just quickly, @Edf198, I live in Canada at Fort Erie Ontario. Maybe we have something in common. I read in the above comment something referring to a Cobra 148 GTL mobile CB radio AM/SSB. I am not sure if you will read this comment because I have very little success talking on CB radio. I find that I receive more than others can hear me when I transmit. I saw a Cobra 148 GTL mobile CB radio AM/SSB at a pilot flying J truck stop. I should have snapped it up in a heartbeat. BELIVE THIS OR NOT I was told by some of those folks who wear the headsets there that the guy who can open the showcase isn't here at the moment. I honestly think that I should have kicked in the showcase door or window with a pair of safety boots taken the radio and ran with it!!!!!!! Only because it is a rare item in my humble opinion and I know for a fact that there is a SAMA Photofact for the Cobra 148 GTL. I do not know what the Sam photofact would possibly be useful for though. Now I am just wondering how much interest RUclips or Google will charge me for being on here and typing. Nor will I even know how much you will sue me for for typing under your comment!

    Love the basics for your first cb! I am getting a cb to set up at home. I already have a radio but want a good reliable radio 40 channel/ SSB and fm. Used have a few back in the late 70’s and early 80’s so getting ready to start all over just on SSD my budget is tight

    Whether one is going to be a hobbyist or just for road trips Will really change in the type of a radio one gets, but for the average joe who wants one for the car, the cobra 25, cobra 29, or even the uniden pc76 are great starter radios then if they decide to get into it more upgrade to a ssb radio like the cobra 148 or galaxy 959, I’ve got all the ones I listed except the uniden 76 which is basically a cobra 29 under a different name and with better components.

      I'm researching for a CB just for road trips and hunting with my buddies.
      What would you suggest for an antenna?

      @@natureterp I’ve had great results with the Wilson 1000 and is what I’ve used for years they come in magnet mounts and trunk mounts. By the way, if you got a vehicle that hasn’t got much room for a cb, another excellent radio is the uniden pro 520, very basic but has excellent components inside and is a loud talker.

      @@bobdillashaw4360 Great! Thanks for the suggestions and quick response!
      I have an internal roll cage on an '88 4runner - so plenty of places for a large CB :)
      I'm thinking about having a bracket welded to the roll cage in the bed of the truck to mount the antenna - from watching videos this morning it looks like the antenna needs a really good ground. I rarely have my campershell on.
      Cheers!

      @@natureterp glad I can help, if you’re going to go that way with welding a bracket, you might look into the Francis whips, they come in 5.5 feet and 4 foot, back I. The late 80s I had a 7 footer that was great, but they don’t sell them at that length anymore, but still has a great reputation, you’ll just need to get the coax and mounting stud and washers, it will be a lot cheaper than the Wilson antenna.

    Hey Dave! I have a Cobra 29, pumped up, dead-keying around 30 watts, using an original RK-56 microphone. I’m drooling about installing it into my Class B camper van soon! (and, YES, with a Francis fiberglass antenna!). I don’t need the Texas Star 250 watt linear I have for distance talking [as the radio has plenty of audio and power already], but, I’m gonna install it anyway mainly for using the preamp for better ‘ears’…why not? Lol! And, once I’m back out on the road again and I can’t stand another word from a mouthy wanna-be steering wheel holder I’ll rip his butt apart and he’ll be looking for me to be in a big truck! 😂 I have a Cobra 25LX, BRAND NEW, and, still in the box and has never been used. I bought it for $50 believe it or not. I’ve often thought about having it turned into a ‘big radio’ like my Cobra 29 but have never got around to it. As for the old ‘original’ Cobra 25 I wished I could get my hands on one…I still hate myself for ever selling the one I had at one time. I’ve been told, over the years, by several radio techs that you can do more with that radio than any other Cobra! That’s quite a supply of radios you have! I’ve went through the import radio buying days myself, buying Galaxy, the President line, etc, but, got bored with them pretty quickly. My 29 is more radio than I’ll ever need once I take it outta the closet and blow out all of the the dust and cobwebs! Great video as always! Stay safe! ~Jim~

      @truckerdaveandred6731  Год назад +1

      I have two of them and I really enjoy them. I have found that if you just convert it to a CB but do not peek and tune it, just leave it in standard 10 m fair, you're going to have a very nice Crystal Clear sounding radio. Beings as they are a 10 m radio there's no real reason to tune them because they put out quite a bit of power and what you really need is a decent antenna setup. The knobs are not really that confusing once you figure them out. They're just there to really help you fine-tune the radio to get the best sound. They're one of the better radios out there and if you have to get it repaired, make sure you find a good reputable guy to do it because these radios require someone who understands the nuances of an old school radio. Like I said, I've enjoyed both of mine immensely and I think you will too.
      One thing I did that really did help was I run a Road King 56 CB Mic that really does a nice job. An Astic mic works pretty well too. I prefer them over the stock mic.

    Ben witching your channel and you seem to know what you are talking about . So I used to have a CB radio all the time in my cars about 💯 year ago and now I'm disabled and stuck at home. Anyway I got one of my CB's and am using it at the house my antenna is about 30ft high. What kind of antenna could I use for this setup for now. One day I might get a Base stashing. Any ideas. Thanks so much.

      A base station would be pretty cool. Truthfully, all I've ever done is exactly what you're doing. Put an antenna up in the air and hook a CB up to it and I've had pretty good luck with that. You get the antenna up high enough and you'll start really getting out. Radios are weird. I have a couple that are really awesome with line of sight and I have a couple that will hit skip like crazy. Get yourself a good power booster and getting out 20 to 30 Mi shouldn't really be a problem.
      I do know that there's a bunch of sideband clubs out there and that would be really interesting to get involved with. I played around with that with my Galaxy 99 and that was a lot of fun.

    What is a final

    • @truckerdaveandred6731
      @truckerdaveandred6731  Год назад +1

      The final is basically a transistor that dictates the power output of your particular radio. They also are a safety device because if you bypass them, and send unlimited wattage through the radio you will burn your radio up. A lot of cb shops will bypass them to allow the radio to put out more power but you will quite literally cook your radio in about 4 months. A final is very important

    I see no reason to use Bluetooth through CB when headsets now are such great quality.

    • @truckerdaveandred6731
      @truckerdaveandred6731  2 года назад

      Before headsets really started taking off and they started passing all these hands-free laws, Cobra actually had a really good setup but it's kind of not even a thing anymore because of the reasons what you said. A lot of these companies don't allow these guys to even wear headsets now. They were also at one time talking about banning them from semi trucks also. This was kind of a way around it. But I agree, some of these new headsets are incredible

    This is a funny one: How to buy your first CB radio. I will probably die of old age before I will ever buy a CB radio.......!!!!!!!!!!!😀💋🤘🌍🏒🏁®™©©©☢☢☢☢. Well, I know that nobody will read this but I will rant in a soap box. I know none of you will read this. Believe it or not, I am located in Canada just across the Peace Bridge from Buffalo New York USA. Truthfully, I should know that had I been working I would have had money to buy something like a CB radio. I am taking a very great risk by logging into Google since it is known that we know a lot but we do not know everything about the Universe or nature. Does anyone here know that Big Companies are known as vicious organizations? Well, I am sure that none of you will actually really worry to much about me. I have spent most of my life on hold calling EMS or 911 or emergency services giving up and going to sleep or trying tp go to sleep at night..
