Nice job! Wind a thin piano type wire around the nut in the vise with a loop on the end for your finger. Then just slowly pull the wire - turning the pipe as you weld. No hand in the way. LOL! I just clamp a short pipe coupling in the vise with a pin to stop a tube from falling through. I welded my lazy susan plate to the tube instead of the nut/threads like you used (which are obviously fine). Works great. I also just use duct tape to hold the sand. Works every time.
At 2:11 when you weld end on pipe filled with sand or stuff... DO NOT MAKE IT AIR TIGHT ... if per chance there were moisture in the sand it might blow up when heated. Just a Note for other watcher... I don't think he made it air tight. I use Oil Dry for my pipe stuffing, some Cat litter will work also.
Here's a dumb question... If you have a heavy duty pipe bender like that, why do you need the heat and the sand? Won't the bender do the job by itself?
Sorry didn't see your question till now. This is to prevent kinks and wrinkles in the pipe on the inside radius of the curve. You are right the press could bend it but they generally don't look as nice that way.

Shops that do bending of pipe regularly would have a rotary draw pipe bender which also prevents the kinking.
