    I was a Roman Catholic scholar and became Orthodox. The backlash was immense, but it was the single greatest gift of my life, and I have a beautiful family so I don't toss that claim around lightly. There is nothing even close to Orthodoxy, and there is exactly one, visible, shining church for all of us to accept or reject. Let's make this decision solemnly, because our eternal soul hangs in the balance.

      @@luciobrazil007 Orthodoxy is perfect. Unity is in theology in Orthodoxy. Unity is in political submission in RCism. Anyone can avoid theology and with an open heart and exposure to Orthodoxy accept it as the one true church, just as all saints did. However, the flaws with Romanism are innumerable: Papalism says one person is supreme, indefectible, universal, and infallible, yet this didn't crop up in dogma until as late as the 19th century... why isn't there a whiff of this in any conciliar document or patristic teaching? Flowery language and word-concept fallacy does not count, but even those things are not conciliar. The discord between Western Orthodoxy, pre-scholastic Romanism, post-scholastic Romanism, V1 Romanism, V2 Romanism is insane. We were taught holes in the narrative pretty openly-- we were taught to live in cognitive dissonance. Created Grace and Absolute Divine Simplicity are evil dogmas. Immaculate Conception destroys our anthropology. There were massive transformations in RC spirituality starting exactly in the 11th century: stigmata, female saints with sexual hysteria, imaginative prayer, body part worship, so on, so forth. Completely alien to the Orthodox West of the first 1000 years. Now, to hold onto a failed faith, people are driven to schizophrenia, seeing things, appealing to prophecy, spell-casting (like trying to cast a spell on Russia-- completely insane, completely alien to Christian life at any point since Christ was born... yet well known to pagans), appealing to "rigor on divorce on contraception) even though *post schism Roman Catholicism* spent *300-800 years* without these new doctrines of Schrodinger's marriage (since an annulment means you were never married, you'll have to wait til death to know if you were) and no-contraception-but-somehow-NFP-isn't-contraception (which is openly denied by canons and the universal voice of the Fathers *even in the West.*) I was gypped. I know how the RC church manipulates, coerces, and shames. I blessedly never was treated badly myself, but I see it in others, and I know my own cognitive dissonance I had to work through. There are millions of people who don't understand there is an alternative. They think it is RCism, Protestantism (prima facie a joke, if well-intentioned at times), or paganism/nihilism. This is not true: the church is alive, and you are part of a conditioning program to keep your mind focused on Protestantism as the only alternative to Papism.

      @@luciobrazil007 How do you live a good holy life without the sacraments, theosis, or worshipping the true God? Roman Catholics are bound by dogma to worship a monad, and they lack all true sacraments. Common grace works everywhere, even in pagan lands, and some of those people whose hearts are aligned towards Orthodoxy even despite what's demanded from them may by God's mercy be saved. I certainly hope so. But it's clear that the path is narrow, and the sacraments are the greatest tools we have to work to salvation. We should reject heresy and pursue real sacraments if we want a great chance. Those that are ignorant have an excuse, but few are ignorant in this Google era.

Being new to the church either requires patience or a willingness to engage with the community for guidance- or both - and all of these help with spiritual growth. Trying to follow God & walk in his light and to do our best to be less sinful is also not easy. Nobody said it's easy - just that it's worth it.

    My question is this, I understand that the Saints that came before us are not dead. I understand that they are present with the Lord. And I even understand that they are praying for us, and I thank God for their prayers. So when it comes to intercession of the Saints, I can see asking a Saint to pray for me. But I don’t quite get praying to them. For instance prayers to Mary, sometimes will say things like;
    “ My Queen, My Mother, I offer
    myself entirely to thee.
    And to show my devotion to thee,
    I offer thee this day, my eyes,
    my ears, my mouth, my heart,
    my whole being without reserve.
    Wherefore, good Mother, as I am thine own, keep me, guard me as thy property and possession.
    Amen.”
    This just comes off as more than veneration. I could be totally wrong. But where I am going with this, is in order to be a part of the Orthodox Church, do I have to pray to Mary and or other Saints in this nature?
    Thank you so much, as I have tried to ask others this question and I cannot seem to get an answer. So I hope that you or anyone can help. Again, may God bless you.

    • @ProtectingVeil
      @ProtectingVeil  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for your question, brother! Here are a couple of thoughts, fwiw: 1) The prayer that you reference (as an aside, I'd appreciate knowing what translation this is(!)) can absolutely be prayed in such a way that does not cause theological problems. As with many of the prayers and hymns of the Church, they are firstly expressions of the heart (and this point is actually incredibly important...but it takes being Orthodox awhile to truly appreciate it...it has been said that the veneration of the Theotokos is one of the mysteries of the Church, and can therefore only be appreciated within the life of the Church...which brings me to the bigger point). 2) When asked, I am wont to tell catechumens that they should not become Orthodox until they're able to say (something like): "I believe that the Orthodox Church is the one holy body of Christ, the pillar and foundation of the truth, and that the life and traditions of the Church are gifts of the Holy Spirit and as such non-negotiable. If I don't understand (or feel uncomfortable about) some aspect of the Church (such as the veneration of icons, relics, the Saints, etc.) then it is not a problem with the Church, but the result of a lack of understanding on my part, and I will accept and live these traditions with the conviction that I will eventually understand and love them." I appreciate your concern (I was a Protestant once myself!), but the problem with not approaching Orthodoxy with this attitude is that one will come into the Church with the Protestant mindset that the conviction of the individual believer is ultimately above the authority and tradition of the Church. Unless this approach changes, the best case scenario is that the believer's spiritual life will be undermined by their individualism and trust in themself, and in the worst case scenario, they will end up leaving the Church (which I've seen far too many times). The best (and really only true) way is to enter as a child, with an open heart and mind to fulfill St. Paul's words, "do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." It is not possible to have a spiritual life without learning obedience...and obedience often requires the crucifying of one's mind (to use Fr. Seraphim Rose's expression).

    I'm a protestant. After listening to Jonathan I kind of understand what the appeal of ortodoxy is, but after visiting the actual worship service, it seems so distant and confusing. Everthing is symbolic, images, robes even songs and words. It seems that I need to probably study few years in some courses before I would able to apreciate the ortodox service. Its so difficult to get into it with modern mind. Is this inentional - to raise the bar for new entrants so high, that very few people can actually connect with it. Why not use actual language we speak, instead of using some ancient words and forgotten symbols.

    • @ProtectingVeil
      @ProtectingVeil  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for taking the time to comment! I appreciate your concern…but I’d encourage you to look at Orthodox Christianity from a different perspective. I don’t think you need to spend years studying and taking courses in Orthodoxy, you primarily need to change your perspective (and if you don’t know how, begin by simply trying to recognize the ways in which your modern Protestant worldview colors what you see). There is a reason that Christ told his disciples “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). It is also the reason that both Christ (Matthew 4:17) and St. John the Baptist (Matthew 3:2) begin their ministry with the words, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” “Repent” (“metanoia” in Greek) is not an ethical command, but a command to literally change the way you view the world/reality.
      You ask, “Is this intentional - to raise the bar for new entrants so high, that very few people can actually connect with it.” The answer, of course, is no! Our liturgical practices are mostly over a thousand years old. What has happened in the meantime (most substantially in the past 200 years) is that modern man has lost his ability to enter into the spiritual realities that were common to Christians for thousands of years.
      You go on to say, “Why not use actual language we speak, instead of using some ancient words and forgotten symbols.” Using the same logic, you might suggest that we rewrite Scripture as well, so that it’s easier to understand. But if you try to do this, you will definitely end up throwing the baby out with the bath water. The thing is that *we are the ones who need to be changed*! If we allow them to, both Scripture and the liturgical life of the Church will transform us, and we will slowly, slowly actually begin to understand the words of Scripture and the ethos of Orthodox liturgical life.
      Yes, the services should be in the language of the local people (and this is mostly the case in the United States). But if we find ourselves feeling that Scripture and the liturgical life of the Church are hard to understand, then we should be chastened and challenged to understand that *we have fallen away from divine revelation*, and we should try with all our strength to understand, and most importantly, to live according to this divine revelation.

    • @marismols
      @marismols 2 года назад

      @@ProtectingVeil Thanks for your answer! Well, Bible keeps being translated into new language as language changes (unlike koran). And the purpose is - for people to be able to understand what is written. May be we should do the same with the symbolic (visual) language of the church. Translate it into something that is more understandable to a modern man? Even if it is a perfect and divine symbolic language - what good it is if most of the people have no chance of understanding it and need some kind of assistance. Speaking of assistance, I guess then we would need somebody explaining what is going on during the service or at least a brouchure. Don't get me wrong, I really like symbolic stuff the way Jonathan explains, but I have a feeling I would not be able to come by the explanation of such things on my own. Regarding divine guidence and transformation (conversion) - these things to my mind are so untangable (like a wind). Can I really tell if I am converted or being transformed. Can someone else tell, looking at me. There is never 100% answer I think. The only way is to judge by the fruit. I can't hear voice of God explicitly.
