I cried more the 2nd time I watched this, cause it not only hurt for Luffy and the strawhats but also for Kuma. When he said "We won't see each other again", it destroyed me. He knew what was gonna happen to him. He was saving them and yet everyone on that island treated him like a bad guy. I was so grateful but so sad for him 😭

For real though... more anime, especially shonen needs this.

This episode was like watching a horror movie. It scared me more than the entire Thriller Bark arc
Thriller Bark was a fun adventure compared to this.
thriller bark is second to sky island on funniest arc.
Hearing the "you will never see me again" now gives me so much respect for ODA.
He wrote this 15 years ago and he already had the who of Kuma's extraordinary Story fleshed out and waiting. Keeping it to himself for a whole 15 years.

This is one of the most intense scenes ever seen if it's your first time seeing it and not knowing. I was so out of it after watching this. I think I took a break from one piece for like a month after this. Kuma is Goated for this though. Much respect

The first time me watching this episode I had my eye red af due to crying only knowing after what Kuma did was to save them from dying.
Kuma had to give Luffy a dose of reality: *You are not ready for the New World.*
What Kuma showed Luffy here was a taste of what would have happened. If they'd decided to go to the New World, a similar scenario would have played out, but the results would have been permanent.
Rewatching again and realising the real meaning to Kuma's "We will never meet again, farewell" line 😢

Sanji: I just let two friends (Brook and Zoro) disappear while I watched on.
Really touching coming from Sanji especially him and Zoro always arguing and clashing over petty things.
Sanji is always viewed as a comic relief, but he's the most compassionate and protective strawhat. Zoro, Luffy and Jinbe do care deeply about their crewmates, but at the same time believe that they can protect themselves. Sanji, on the other hand, always looks out for everyone and would get outta his way to protect his friends.

Nami: being scared / beating up the dummies
Usopp: being scared / lying
Sanji: pervert / ladies' man
Chopper: childish / scared
Robin: dark humor
Franky: pervert / mecha / cola
Brook: pervert / 45° / skull joke
Jinbe: super serious, the perfect foil / straight man
Sanji is one of the intelligent/TUKKOMI characters (Nami, Sanji, Usopp) in Strawlhats. Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Franky, and Brook are clearly described as BOKE/idiots. In "ONE PIECE PARTY," Sanji convinces Robin to side with him, saying that Robin shouldn't be in charge of the BOKE role(who says dumb things) coz this team has few TUKKOMI role(who understand common sense and facilitate conversation). If you don't recognize Sanji's intelligence in the Eng ver, it's coz of bad translation. The line in this scene is also "What the hell am I doing!? I just lost two right in front of me!" and he doesn't say "friends" as in the floridly coordinated Eng subtitles.
Even now it's still making me tear up years later. The thought of feeling powerless to save the people you care about and seeing Luffy breakdown in a way we've never seen before in the series will always get me
still makes me tear up.
i wonder how insane that wait was for the next chapter when this was current in the manga..

It was worse in germany as a child because the german dub went up to 405 and we didnt get a new episode for 2 years. If you didnt move on to the sub or manga, you just thought that's how one piece ended 😅

It's called character development. Not a dumb story where the mc always wins.

For example the enemies that don’t finish him off like crocodile do it because of a character flaw of theirs that the author intentionally put there to make a point about the villain of the arc
Or like Magellan luffy only survived because he was saved by bon clay and Iva which was also a point the author was trying to make about the protagonist, as mihawk said in the next arc “his greatest power is his ability to rally people to his side”
So ppl that oversimplify it saying it’s an asspull or plot armor don’t actually see the amount of writing that goes into each of these moments

knowing what Kuma went through as a slave and maybe knowing at this point that Luffy is Sun God Nika has to be sad for him, sacrificing his last remaining time of his humanity by helping Luffy feels poetic but really tragic :(
I saw this really touching fan comic of a mindless Kuma hearing the Drums of Liberation and subconsciously emulating the beat in the same way his father did.
Then he starts remembering and we get this panel of him crying tears of Joy and crying out to his father that the Sun God was real after all. It mirrored the Panel of him crying after his father died, which made it even more touching because this time they are tears of Joy and Relief.
Really hope Kuma gets an ending like that in the actual manga.

and to think that currently in the manga we are just seeing the outcome and the reasons why Kuma acted this way. ODA IS VERY GOOD AT HOW HE BUILDS HIS WORLD AND THE ACTIONS OF HIS CHARACTERS.
One of the most devastating events in all of manga and anime.
Watching it after knowing kuma's history hits different.

Watching this again after reading manga, It makes sense why he did that.
Kuma was a real one. He wanted to show Luffy how out matched they truly were and that they werent ready. Without Kuma the straw hats story plot armor would be the thickest thing in existence. Kuma doing this showed luffy that they needed to train if they were gonna face the giants of the one piece world

I caught up with the manga durring luffys fight with moria. So the first BIG thing i experienced "live" was NOTHING HAPPENED and after that came sabaody with this shit. Every time i watch it i cry like a baby.
Everyone knew that they are not dead. Thats not the part that break people. Its the fact that Kuma one by one took luffys nakama from him. He is the CAPTAIN. Its his job to protect his crew. Luffys said it himself, i cant cook or navigate or use a sword but he is strong he can protect his nakama. He failed. When he was a kid he lost sabo, he couldn't do anything about that. He said to ace that he want to become stronger, much much stronger. After everyone vanished he said im weak. Luffy thought that everyone is dead.
The 2nd part is kuma. Knowing his backstory and everything and seeing it through kumas eyes is messed up. He believes in Nika. This was the only way to save him and his crew and he knew that he wouldnt see him again. His mind would be erased.
After seeing the latest chapter of the manga makes me feel like...

The first time this came out? Hm...it was a long time ago, but I remember being amazed. Not shocked per say, you could tell earlier that things would become dire. And when an Admiral showed up...look, Admirals were the cream of the crop back then. Before Emperors and Commanders and haki, power-scaling was simple. Whoever had the best fruit was the strongest and usually, logia were on top. That's why Blackbeard's DF was so interesting, it negated DF powers which is HUGE pre-haki.
When Kizaru showed up, I just hoped he wouldn't meet the Straw-Hats. He clowned the supernova. Made them look like utter punks. But when he did, and on the first damn day no less, I knew it was over for them unless Rayleigh did something. But for it to end like that...well, it was amazing. I didn't know wtf was going to happen next. And I'm pretty sure I only waited a week xD Oda didn't take breaks back then. At least, not until the TS.
