If you cannot find the book at a reasonable price (like if it's out of stock on Amazon it will be priced something wacky like $200 when it should be $20-30), please do check out the link in the video description for Hazel's site to order directly from her (R210 is around $15 US). Shipping is via courier from South Africa, so if you add a few things into your cart like a couple books and a kit or two, the cost will be much easier to bear (as I said in the video, her kits are fantastic). 😊
Yes I know crewel embroidery traditionally is done with wool, but many designers also do use other threads (like DMC and other specialty threads) as they are much more accessible to stitchers around the world than the traditional wool threads. 😊
Thank you for this! Do you think crewel work is more difficult to learn than cross stitch? Or if you have basic cross stitch knowledge (including back stitch, lazy daises, french knots, etc. ) it is easier to go from one to the other?
Hi Dawn! Cross stitch is just one embroidery stitch, as are all the other ones you listed, so it's just a matter of learning the specific techniques for the various stitches. Like a lot of what you're seeing in the little sample of what I've done is long and short stitch (aka satin stitch but placed in a way the colours blend together better), and there's some backstitch, whipstitch, and I think chain stitch in there too (along with techniques like needle weaving that I'd never tried). Crewel work is a collection of a bunch of different embroidery stitches, but often done to represent Jacobean motifs (and I believe often done with fine wool, this book uses DMC embroidery floss and some other specialty flosses and not wool). Unfortunately the book is currently proving tricky for many people to find right now (of course), but it is available on Hazel's site. Shipping is a courier from South Africa, so it won't be inexpensive, but if you grab a couple of items like a book or two and a kit, then it makes the shipping far easier to bear. The kit I got in particular was so great, and saved me so much time trying to hunt down various specialty flosses from a bunch of different shops (plus the printed fabric is fantastic quality). Hope that helps! 🙂
Looking at the finished project, it seems the colors blend more and give a completely different finished look than embroidery or cross stitch. Thank you for all that information, really interesting. I guess I need to wait a bit and save some money to get books and kits together. Thanx 🥰
Honestly, that one's still awesome, the patterns are so intricate so to me it'd be worth it. I don't remember how many patterns total are in it, but say it's 10, that's only about $4.40 per pattern (which is far less than you'd pay for the patterns individually). You could always see if it's available on her site and see what shipping would be, I'm guessing with the shipping from South Africa it'd be more than buying it on Amazon. Or check her site out and see if she sells any of the patterns (like Pertinacity) as a kit with all the floss and pattern included. You'll still pay for shipping, but for a project that will likely take you over a hundred hours to stitch, that's pennies per hour of entertainment (plus learning all those amazing stitches). 😊❤️
It might just be out of stock right now, keep checking Amazon but you can get it directly from Hazel's site as well (210 Rand is around $15 US) -- www.hazelblomkamp.com/product/crewel-intentions/ 🙂
Thanks Veronica, corrected. It was correct in the caption, weirdly I did send it to Hazel when I first published it and she didn't catch the typo either. 😊
What a stunning book, beautiful pictures, thank you for showing it. Amazing book.
It is, isn't it! 😍😍 Glad you enjoyed the review! 😊

Beautiful. I love doing crewel work
Awesome, it's so lovely eh Bonnie! 😊
Just so you know, real crewel embroidery is made with wool thread like Appleton. The threads in the package are DMC cotton floss.

This book, today on Amazon is $43.99 U.S. 🙁 which of her other books would you recommend that may be less costly?

Would love book but so expensive $200
That's really strange, must be a glitch or it might be unavailable from Amazon right now - I only paid around $30 for it. 😊
@@peacockandfig I was looking at link you have below. I’m wondering if it was showing price in Rands African dollar??

@@peacockandfig thank you
@@Artiefrog yes it is, her site is priced in Rand. 😊
Blomkamp. Not Blompkamp...
