Some great footage, thanks. I think it's the first time I've seen the Garratt taking on water. 0:34 Engineer in 3642: "Gee, we seem to be pulling very well today" ;-D Both wonderful locos. I could be mistaken, but that doesn't seem like an original AD60 whistle on 6029. If they can't get an original, perhaps use a whistle like 5917's? I think 5917's is the meanest I've heard on any Aussie loco; immediately recognisable, almost a muscular, growling roar/scream more than a whistle. Seems more like the original I've heard from footage of AD60s from back in their operating days.
Great shots! Loved it! Super power for that sized train with a 36 and that big Garratt. A very interesting original concept......designed to run on light branch lines (16T axle loading) but v powerful even in original form.... at just under 60k lbf!!! What a great job those guys have done with the restoration! …Hᴜɢʜ….ツ
I have just managed to buy the N gauge version of this loco after 2 years of searching at a price I could afford. The one that I bought has the rotary coal bunker so I am now looking for the fixed bunker type which is far more rare and then the oil tender type, wish me luck.
The Australian loading gauge is about 10 % smaller than the U.S one. Would love to see a "Big Boy" , "Challenger", U.P. or S.P. or N&W 611 Northern and the Garrett on one track. Can't see it happening??? Stranger things have happened. Never thought we would have a "Big Boy" restored either. Been a rail-fan for 61 of my 64 years.
I am 66.Australian. grew up in Mortdale, southern Sydney, close to the Illawara line that went down south close to the coast, never saw a Garret on this line, never saw a Beyer Garret hauling passenger until this restored one, they were built to haul heavy freight. sadly when steam was at the end of use you could see a high speed express Locomotive in tandem with a Garret..

OK! somebody clue me in! is the whistle a Crosby 6 inch step-top whistle? Let me know somebody. That whistle stands the hair up on the back of my neck!!!!!
Nice video, SF. Thank you. Wish you would follow the locomotive as it passes by. Is this not a freight locomotive? Hate to see freight locmotive going fast. Must be hard on it and hard on the track. Broad gauge?
Yes, it is a freight loco but like all restored steam locos, it'll probably never haul freight again which means it'll never work very hard which means it'll never bark like it did in the days of yore. It has an axle load of only 16 tons so is very easy on the track, and is standard gauge.
+railpast articulation, a larger loco can handle sharper curves; axle load, loco weight spread over more wheels and length; power, two sets of driving wheels for more power... and other things. Google "Garratt Locomotive" for more...
When they were first introduced, they had to modify a lot of platforms along the lines they were planning to use them on - these locomotives were a wee bit wider than anything else used earlier!!
+fordlandau the museum that owned her was liquidated. She was put up for sale, a few interested parties have put in offers. No news yet as to who is the successful buyer...
it does not mean they are not incorrectly firing them it means they are just getting rid alot of soot an ash from the exhaust and its is sometimes for show if you odn't like it them deal with it
What a magnificent sight! I can almost feel my eyes stinging. Great photography. Thanks.
Thanks! It's an incredible loco!
Superbly put together. Really enjoyed that. Thanks mate ! 👍🍻
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@steamfreak BTW... 4 foot 2 eyes of blue, Greta Thunberg's after you ! 🤪😄😂🍻👍👍
That Garratt is breathtaking. What a terrifying machine!
Haha indeed!
6029 is a strange looking beast. Never seen anything like it. I'm glad it was restored and is operational.
Its a 60 class garrat locomotive. And you're right. it definately looks odd.
+The Creepernator Odd yes, but oh so powerful.
bushranger51
A mighty Garratt! Awesome locos.
Really enjoyed this! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
beautiful locomotive love that whistle!!!!!!

They sure are magnificent machines! Not sure about the whistle, but yes 5917s is certainly awesome!

Yes that Garratt is amazing and the 36 is looking pretty good too!
The 60 class may not be the biggest, fastest, or most powerful steam loco but it is the toughest looking loco of all time.
They are awesome!

Good luck, I hope you found the model!
Wonderful engines.Keep them rolling.Its culture
Thanks! Yes they truly are wonderful!

Mate! This is a bloody great vid eh. Many thanks ;)
Cheers mate
Fantastic Steam action!😁🏗️📢
Thanks!
good to see the steamers working on there own without a diesel taging along for the ride
There is a diesel on the back of that train

The Garratt was still working hard...
would love to see the cab forward engine if possible double head with the Garrett
they are in different countries and there is only one cab forward left and it is not operational
Perhaps they could put a cab on the front of the Garratt?

i think it is a crosby 5 chime
Wasatch Range Railway sounds like an SP desert five chime.
I'm not aware of Crosby making step top five chimes. Could be Star Brass too.
I'll leave this one to the experts

Yes, standard gauge freight loco. Yes I should do more pan shots, but I'm often taking photos at the same time!
The engineering gone in to that is amazing Where do you start?
It's an amazing machine!
@@thomassu5546 Yes, it is a Garratt loco which has two engine units and a suspended boiler unit in the middle.
If a steam engine can be made in this style why couldn't America figure out the triplex weight problem? Props to Austria and their engineering!
Australia mate.
The USA would have been better off with Garratts
Where are Garratts still operating??Australia,Zimbabve,South Africa, where else????
There are a few 2' gauge Garratts in England and Wales
Awesome.
Thanks!
No computers back then when this was being designed .
Nope! An amazing machine.
Magnifique
Merci!
Must say it is differnt looking. What was the point of designing it that way?

Meu pai era ferroviario e MAGUINISTA e trabalhou muitos numa garrat em Pedro Osório nos anos 50 .
Thanks!
Me tradus para o português a tua resposta.
sweat shots !!!
Thanks man!
Just saw a race between the 3642 and another train in this video ruclips.net/video/Ifh1H8d54B8/видео.html earlier today !!
Hopefully they will repeat that race in 2022!
Now in mothballs! Why??

steamfreak3450 - Steam trains around the world thanks. Very sad !
6029 was recently bought & actually is undergoing steam tests, she was in steam for this year's Thirlmere steam fest.
Em tempo pedro PedrO Osório fica no rio grande do sul e o número da garrat era 906.e funcionava a filial.
Thanks!
這種機關車要是出現在台灣會嚇死寶寶了..................

All that black smoke someone does not know how to fire properly
+188basstrom ooh but it looks nice in the photos!
Point taken
They only do it to annoy the Greenies.
it does not mean they are not incorrectly firing them it means they are just getting rid alot of soot an ash from the exhaust and its is sometimes for show if you odn't like it them deal with it
Steam engine without smoke is nothing but a diesel in disguise. Poor it on. :-)
