- Parliament has welcomed an influx of Generation Z MPs following Labour's landslide election victory, with seven of the eight youngsters being from Keir Starmer's party.
Labour MP for North West Cambridgeshire Sam Carling has become the youngest sitting MP, known as the baby of the house, at just 22 years old.
Labour MPs Joshua Dean and Euan Stainbank are also just 24 years old.

People forget William Pitt the younger was only 24 when he became prime minister and an outstanding one at that
Different time, different culture.

Yet, he was educated in a library full of the greatest books ever written, a genius, and the son of none other than Pitt the Elder, who was also a phenominally good prime minister, and taught his son every trick in the book.

Apart from the fact that there are a bunch of youngsters, I’m honestly more impressed and excited by the fact that they are first given a choice to “swear or affirm”.
Yet another thing the USA could take note of- British politicians are not required to have any religious beliefs nor swear on a holy book if they don’t want to. They don’t need to fake a faith to attract votes.
And, if they do want t swear to their god they get to choose WHICH book and which god , without it being a big deal.
Just as ridiculous to pledge allegiance to some bloke who’s in charge because his mum was, than it is to swear on a Bible.
@@thespamdance311 a little off topic but ok. It’s a monarchy. Shocking. So are plenty of other countries. At least the UK doesn’t let the king run the country! It’s all ceremonial, so why the fuss?
And arguing that a monarchy is as silly as a religion is a pretty good debate question . Discuss. I would say they are both silly, but one far more damaging in that people across the globe seem set on duping themselves into the threat of burning for eternity if they are nice to gay people, and the monarchy just…. costs a lot or ordinary people money for some people to be symbolic figureheads. The lesser evil I would argue.
that’s interesting,with quran too?
@@thespamdance311 there was an mp who swore to work his hardest to become a republic but still affirmed to become and mp, forget what his name was
It’s no accident, an atheist MP fought very hard to secure this right; his constituency also backed him and kept re-electing him in the face of Parliament refusing to accept him unless he swore on the Bible - Charles Bradlaugh MP and the citizens of Northampton made this possible.
They got jacob collier in parliament
The fact only two of them swore with the Bible and the rest affirm'd instead. Really shows how religion nearly has no influence on my generation..
that's just how parliament is. watch the old pensioners being sworn in and you'll see most of them affirm too. makes sense really, none of the major parties these days care about representing Christians so why would we join one
sounds good to me
scary how so few care
The fact that politicians have to pledge allegiance to a monarch is a disgrace.
Good for them. Religion has no place in parliament
The second guy has Ed Miliband's hairline.
There's no such thing as 'Gen Z' or any other of these silly 'generational' categories. They are just cynical marketing terms.
Yep. “Gen Z” just sounds better than “young.”
They are ridiculous terms, and also damaging I think.
Its just a bracket of years, given a name. Look all stereo-types and labels, it bears some truths and hides others. The reality is that being young, they're more likely to represent the attitudes of others of their generation.
Generation is an era and helps to distinguish. Young could be anything between 1-35, that is not gen-z.

I like how they provide both religious and non religious oaths to take. Nice to see governments actually evolving with the times
The affirmation was brought in in the 1800s for the Quakers. Alas it has been hijacked by the non-believers.

We got young people in a job for old geezers, finally
I think there is such a thing as too young, and too old, for government. Too young, no matter how intelligent, have not had the years of life experiences to acquire real perspective, and too old risks being out of touch with the reality of current times and of course cognitive decline.
I think we need both very young and very old people in government. There just needs to be a good mix.
Someone like Joe Biden should not serve while Mahathir Mohamad was well equipped to become Malaysian PM in his 90s.
The same we need younger people with new ideas to open a conversation and show alternatives.
We have far too old at the moment so it's good to have some young MPs in parliament for a change
OK boomer
What did yall do with all that experience besides fucking up the country?
This is what I hate about our system, most MPs you don’t know who they are what they believe in at the end of the day the party just pick someone in the area to be their guy or girl and that’s that, no offence but what does a 22 year old have to offer, they have experienced nothing. Being 22k and living the life of 100k salary and unlimited expenses isn’t the kind of experience we need running the country.
Yet if you only choose older people as your representatives, you're not representing the entirety of the population. Younger voters will, in general, be more aligned with the thoughts of younger MPs, and they get to vote and be represented just as well as older voters. Variety is always good in representation.
You can't win with some people. Young MP's are inexperienced, old MP's are out of touch and unrepresentative, and everyone is making instant assumptions about them doing nothing and getting paid despite the fact they haven't even started yet. Just relax and make judgement when you actually have information to judge.
It's got nothing to do with age. This is a democracy and an open system. MPs get voted into parliament by the people of their constituency. So what are you arguing against? That the people should not have the right to vote for their representatives?
