i have been using the Milwaukee fastback for two years now and its actually a vary solid knife. it keeps a good edge and it can take a beating. i use it well camping, fishing, and in my day to day life. i only have to sharpen it once a month and opening it is as simple as pushing the button and flicking. I've had a lot of pocket knives over the years but this one is actually worth the price that i payed. My knife dose not have the issues that you have in the video so you could have just got unlucky.

If you are in a situation where loss or theft is a big problem, the cheaper knife may be a good choice. Otherwise, I like the good stuff.

Yes, knives are supposed to cut👍🏼 I guess that’s all? Open, lock, unlock without failure? Do those count as standard bare minimum functions, or just cutting (your fingers off due to lock fail) is good enough?
Haha true, but I have done it many times with me Cold Steel blades and I was more looking at it form what I have see other guys do with their knives on construction sites.
The biggest thing it has going for it is it's legal chicago carry. I'm really only aware of 2 knives legal for Chicago carry: this one and the Kershaw Shuffle. And, this one just has a more functional handle and blade shape.
Maybe you could do a video on Chicago Carry knives.
I picked up a similar milwaukee folder for around $20 at home depot and after a couple months of being carried at work a couple times a week it's holding up very well the edge was rolled Slightly but after a few passes on my sharpening steel it'll shave hair I work for a specialty concrete coating company and I use it mostly to open boxes cut plastic sheeting and the occasional scraping of our products off of surfaces we are not coating its a cheap knife but if used as a knife It holds up great
I have never had a liner lock of any brand that has not done that. If you want a sweet Milwaukee get the combo razor and screw driver.
Something that's happened to me twice with cheap knives at work is the pocket clips get caught on things and bend out very easily. It's annoying. Never has happened with my Benchmade bugout. That being said I've thought I lost my Benchmade a couple times at work and had a panic attack lol.
I have been using the hawkbill version of the Milwaukee fastbacks for about 4 years now as my edc. I work as a painter and plasterer, so i'm very likely to manipulate my knife with dirty hands, or use it for dirty tasks, so i stay away from expensive gentleman knives. The Milwaukee knives fall exactly in the quality/price range that i need. I'm never afraid to put my hawkbill to use for any task without being worried about damaging it, and that is precious.
It's a good little knife to throw into a toolbox especially if you're just sharpening pencils etc nothing heavy duty. They were 100% correct when they said it stays Sharp, they just neglected to specify the amount of time as in 2 minutes. I used to be a product photographer when I was young and one thing I learned when doing photos for companies is that sometimes the packaging cost as much or more than the article itself. If you spent $15 for that knife, subtract the cost of the packaging plus the profit that the manufacturer and the store had to make and that knife probably cost just a few dollars so you cannot expect very much from it.
Milwaukee makes a few fixed blades I wouldn't mind seeing your feedback on. I love the fast backs. I used them like crazy while working as a merchandiser at home depot breaking down hundreds of boxes a day.

They have the Milwaukee hardline. Aus 8 steel. But I feel like it would be more in line with the kind of tests you do
i have that same knife but fixed and love it , the 2nd ones made the locks are a lot better. they also redo lock bits for 1505 box cutter
Yeah, Milwaukee has the button lock one with the bit driver. It's called the 5 in 1. I believe its 420HC blade steel. I really like using the 6 in 1 utility knife. When i break down boxes, I'm not actually cutting cardboard, I'm cutting the box tape. Once in awhile I'll have to actually cut real cardboard. It's good to see that Milwaukee gives an inexpensive option for a basic cutting tool.
Skip whatever that is and get the button-lock Milwaukie box cutter. That thing is great. Even has a pocket clip! It's all I use when doing the jobs that I don't dare do with my expensive pocket knives. Opening bags of concrete, stripping wires (when I can't find strippers), you name it.
Damn I open bags of concrete with even my expensive pocket knives and sharpen if need be haha. Usually stropping on diamond compound does the trick
@TheBootyWrangler ha. Weirdly, that's what I was thinking of when I wrote the comment. It's not really a sharpening issue...it's the complete teardown of the knife to clean out the concrete particulate. My knives tend to get wet, occasionally. Bad news if there's concrete powder in the bearings.
That Milwaukee is $7...I'll risk that all day. Ha.
Interesting demonstration. I'm just now becoming aware of this low budget knife segment. I generally spent a bit more; however, I don't buy the high end stuff. I don't beat up any of my equipment. I use the right tool for the right job i.e. I don't use a knife blade to pry anything. It would be interesting to see some comparison testing. I'm going to take a further look into this knife segment. Thanks for sharing.
Took one on a trip to NYC. Didn't want to lose a good knife. Carry it around the house now every now and then. I have the one with a button lock but it is only used to deploy the blade. It actually has a liner lock too. And it does over travel every once in a while on me.
I would love to see if the blade on this would swap perfectly with the 5 in 1. That would be the perfect edc IMO. You would have a dedicated cheap blade for using in any and everything and you would have an excelkent driver that is about as close to and actual screw driver that you can get. Both very practical actual useable and capable dedicated tools.
Been using this little knife for about 6 month now, never had the lock mechanism jam issue. So it's prolly a production line inconsistency we are facing. Or maybe they fixed it. Also I do have a habit to sharpen my knifes with my pocket Worksharp EDC sharpener so blade is not an issue for me. Still looks and works like new.
I love my 1505 fastback for construction. I use the screwdriver as a prybar and beat the hell out of it. Plus if I lose it or don't get it back from someone I'm only out 15 bucks but I still carry secondary knife if I need a longer blade.
At work I usually like the compact fastback utility knife. But recently I came across the compact side slide utility knife. It’s small and lighter then the fastback compact. I have been liking it a lot and it’s $11
I got one for 12 bucks canadian at home depot. Impulse buy. Don't love it. But it's in the inside pocket of my vest when I'm at the cabin. Love the finish though.
Nice to see reviews of the low end knives. I use Dewalt & Milwaukee for my everyday chores. Blue collar knives won’t become collectibles but they do what the high end knives won’t. Great presentation, thanks.
That's a hard no for me. My EDC for work is the Milwaukee utility button version.
That knife plus a real knife is the best combo.

-- Buy them to break them/lose them really. I use the DeWalt knife of comparable price. They keep my older Kershaws (and assorted other good knives) nice. Not knives for life this cheap ones, but most of the time, let's face it, we're cutting open boxes now.
Best knife I have is a Buck and it's dull as a butter knife. Cut sod around my underground sprinklers with it.
I’ve had a miluakee knife for about 4 years now for work and for every day things mines doesn’t jam at all and it’s pretty easy to open and close with one hand maybe just a bad batch?
Why would anyone have high expectations for a $12 dollar knife.........know what you got and treat it as such. I was waiting for the standard RUclips baton test.....hehe.
I have used a fastback for over a year now and the lock has never jammed for me. I use the 7.75 inch knife which is just the larger version of that knife and I like that knife.

I do not have the liner lock issue seen here
I also don't flick knives open either as it can over stress the lock and can lead to lock Stick
Not to mention can cause the stopping pin to loosen up
I see everywhere people flick knives open fast and advise against it, it's abusive to the folder, that aside, apart from blade play here and there, no issues with the knife
I like utility knives cause you can abuse the blade with no worries. A nice best of both worlds is the Cold Steel click-n-cut series.
I’ve been using one of these exact knives for a couple months even cutting thick zip ties no problem jamming
I did go through several in the store and picked between two that both looked like 40% lockup tops and ran with it. Mine has transformed into 100% lockup probably around the first few days but has remained effortless to unlock
I use mine for wood ties and the blade does dull and roll over from that in the first week. They are fibreglass I believe so hey.
I liken these types of knives to other branded knives like Winchester. In my opinion, they are 'merch' items. Kinda like keyrings and t-shirts. Yeah, they look cool and show your allegiance to a company brand, but they're made in China from cheap materials in sweatshops with quite possibly child labour involved somewhere.
I seriously doubt Millwaulkie or Winchester have an R&D arm for their knives. Their marketing department handles that side of things I'd suggest.

Cold Steel locks, never had an issue on those
I don’t split kindling with my pocket knife, but for cutting cord, vines, opening cardboard, tape, or lantern wick, this has to be the best carry blade ever made. It will allow you to keep your Cold Steel, Gerber, and Case Whittler safe in the cedar chest. 😂

Overall budget knives have a place. But I think I speak for a lot of us that spending the money on even a 50 to 60 dollar knife is the way to go.
Or even 30 on a Rat or something. The savings is not worth the potential problems(potentially serious problems)
One exception (and it's not a folder) is Mora. They make excelled knives for very cheap and bang for buck are hard to beat.
Still trying to find a good folder that's a nice balance of affordability and function.
Milwaukee Tools are fanastic and their knives are excellent beaters. They out perform a lot of more expensive knives. Everyone loves Milwaukee knives.
The fastbacks are the best bang for your buck in the sub 20 price range. Milwaukee have great button locks with washers for the money.

harbor freight has a cool $10 8cr13mov knife may be worth testing.
All the tools were locked up at home depot except those and the other knives.

I have a few.....but I really don't like liner locks......Most of the cheapo Chinese knives seem to have them.....I like a blade at least 3 inches in length. For a little more money could get a Kabar Dozier with a back lock...
Ive had really good luck with the light maker Coast they make pretty good knives with styling reminiscent of some major knife makers check out the Rx350 and Dx11

I value my fingers. The extra cost of a cross bolt or TriAd is worth it to me. Even a CS 1911 with a liner lock.
the lock back version of the milwaukee knife is really good, but you can't flick it. it is a strong sturdy lock.
So there is never anything wrong with testing out budget knives because you never know when you will find a gem. Look at BPS knives they are awsome and very budget friendly. On another note as an older guy who has spent most of his life in the mountains and in the wilderness I am still baffled by the whole batoning wood with a knife thing and using your knife to split wood??
In all my life and in all the situations I have been in as a guide in the blueridge mountains of Virginia and a guide out in the rocky mountains of wyoming and a search a rescue team member in wyoming for many years as well.
On top of being a combat veteran in the Army for over 9yrs I have never once ever had wanted or needed to use my knife to baton/split wood to make a fire. Nor would I do that with any knife I own and any knife maker out there would tell you to not do that with there knife.
Now I know you just do it on your channel because that is what all the yuppy bush hippies and hipsters seem to want to see anyone that reviews a knife to do these days because they seem to have this mind set that if a knife can't baton wood then it is not a good knife which is just not true.
and this is no knock on you at all my friend as I really like your channel and if you or anyone else wants to beat the crap out of there knives batoning wood then bang away till your hearts content my friend!! it just baffle me that is all and just an observation from one outdoor woodsman that loves knives to another.

@BravoBassin Well said, sir. Don't have your level of experience, but I've been able to survive outdoor adventures for more than 70 years without abusing a knife. I don't understand how using a knife for a pry bar, or chisel, or camp ax qualifies it for use as a knife.

You would think they would be built rugged considering they’re marketed towards tradesman . Maybe they’re just disposable beaters ? Can’t speak from experience but the fastback is supposed to be the best of the bunch .
id say its more for the novelty than the usefulness. Probably get left on a site somewhere and forgotten, or loaned out. Hell maybe it found a place in a lunch or tackle box.
Had the same problem whit same model. And I am from Denmark. So not a good knife. But the fastback buttonlock is okay
I carry one everyday and I love it. It does everything that a high end knife does. The steel is the same alloy as the high end SOG knives. Remember, Milwaukee, DeWalt etc, are tool companies. Everything they make is designed for rough and heavy construction and repair work use. If it can stand up to repeated heavy use on the job site, I trust my life with it as well. It is just like a 10 dollar Ronson Jetlite torch lighter from a hardware store compared to a multi hundred dollar torch from a classy cigar shop. The Ronson holds the same fuel capacity, functions the same, and toasts my cigar exactly the way I need it to and not more, not less.
Yeah I think I will stick with their fast back utility knife which hasn't let me down yet

Agree. Milwaukee make some great tools. I get the feeling however they (and other tool companies) believe they have to cover all bases and here offer up a knife just in case the competition also offer a knife. Clearly here they have found a cheap generic blade, put on the Milwaukee logo and packaged it up. I get it, but they can clearly do better. Have a great day.

i forget what I paid for them, certainly wasnt as low as 12 bucks, but i got a fixed blade and a folder just for my collection. hate the handle materials. no comfort.

For me, there is no sense in not just spending 10 or 20 more bucks, to enter a whole other category of pocket knives. Why set yourself up or worse, anyone else up for failure, with one of the most prone to accident tools(a very sharp blade) in order to save 10-20 dollars. If you do, you may as well spend that saved money on a big box of bandaids, gauze and super glue.

Just a note. All Husky hand tools have a lifetime warranty. I worked seven years at Home Depot. A guy came with a twenty-five year old ratchet that had broken. He left the store with a brand new one in less than five minutes. Take that Husky back,

I jokingly searched for the Ryobi version... And now, I'm completely baffled by why these power-tool-shaped knives exist and why they would sell such a flawed product.
I don’t trust locking blades. I treat them all like slipjoints. That said, I’ve never had one fail, of any type.

I only trust lockback pocket knives. Lockback pocket knives are a lot safer to use than any other locking system on a pocket knife. My everyday EDC pocket knife is A Cold Steel American LawMan lockback pocket knife. I would never buy a cheap pocket from home Depot or Lowe's. The only good cheap pocket knife from Lowe's that I have heard about is the crescent Tools D2 Flipper Folding pocket knife.
I'd get curious how this holds up compared to the gordon from Harbor freight .

G'day Aaron, interesting mate. Fair to say; like the rest of the power tool mobs, (and indeed other commodity groups), they're work'n off the back of their brand to have a fiddle around with other product lines, everything from knives, to drill bits and drivers, to apparel, bags etc, etc. In fairness I have a De Walt jacket that's been very good for the dough, but at the end of the day it's gonna be very hit and miss, ......... most likely miss.
Btw; Personally I've never had that lock up issue on any budget offering; but many mates have on various budget liner locks in particular; then they bring them to me, since they know I'm into knives and other cutting tools, expecting a fix, .............. bahahaha. Got one or two functional with a file on the lock bar, but really for a few bucks more, get something that will offer decent performance/resilience for even occasional use, ....... or forever be trapped in false economy. I've owned and used a number of Milwaukee knives. The steel was a bit too 'soft' and it didn't retain an edge. On the plus side and for me it was a big plus it locked closed. I accidentally send one of them through a pump system twice. It remained intact. I loan it out a couple of times and it returned very dull. The steel wasn't terrible to resharpen though I stopped the practice and i instructed the kids(co-workers)on how to use a knife and not dull it. As I insisted I be the one using the knife.
Hence, a passable knife that is loan-able as it will be returned, LOL
This knife lacks a lock to keep it closed and is too short, it too California.
Boycott California especially its Hollywood content.
Get a Mora instead...

That's chinesium for you. Dulls quickly and always has some kind of fatal flaw. Even the "high end" chinesium will leave you disappointed
Their non replaceable blade folders are meh. Just go for the replaceable blade for that length.
I carry their $15 fixed blade and enjoy it a lot. The steel isn't great but it lasts long enough through cardboard, cordage, zip ties, etc and hones easily

Yes you can. If any folding blade has an issue with the lock it's potentially dangerous. In this case severe lock stick will force you to use excessive pressure to get it to close. Get it wrong and even the dullest blade will cut you to the bone under such pressure. With so many good blades on the market get something else. Have a great day.
