    I am Somali-Norwegian and I´ve had norwegians straight up telling me that Somali people were better looking than other africans and that we are good looking people. Most of the time I don´t know what to say.... I like compliments but not when they bring down other people.

    This discussion was extremely disappointing and problematic. Nobody on the panel engaged the young viewer's letter intellectually or with tact. This was a great opportunity to highlight how so many communities of color are ingrained with white supremacist mentalities where there is a desperate need to disassociate or attempt to separate oneself from any markers of blackness. Instead, the discussion continued to perpetuate the problematic and racist notions of the white Western world: "we are cultured...we have adeeb." As opposed to what? African-Americans not having any culture or refinement? There is a difference between having nationalistic pride and having a (racist) superiority complex. Any response in this discussion should have began with distinguishing between race and ethnicity. They aren't mutually exclusive folks. You can be Somali and black.
    And is anybody going to acknowledge that this young viewer is suffering from self-hatred and how to combat that? She occupies a world that negatively portrays her community and instead of acknowledging that, we're blaming the victim and calling her "stupid"?
    I think this show is a great idea and I don't want to knock anyone for being innovative and creating...but if you want to build viewership, you need to put more care into its production. Like..can we get some competent panelists -- how were any of these panelists qualified to speak on this subject? Maybe consider rehearsing beforehand, less off the cuff? And can we call out problematic/offensive statements? Because I took some serious offense to some of the statements that were made (and it seemed so did ya'll but didn't call it out...)
    Sheeko Sheeko has potential but needs serious work. This was a trainwreck.

    Let me just say that I went to Somali last year and never heard of having “jareer” maids or workers. Most of the maids are Somali and they work because they need the money to feed their family and they get treated as though they’re apart of that family and they eat the same food and sometimes they give them an extra room to sleep when there done with their chores

    The reason why Somalis should not accept the term Black is very simple. Yes, of course we are Africans, BUT the term Black is generally used by Western Society to subjugate the diversity of African people. It is a term that is connected to people who do not know their background (i.e. Those who were enslaved by Whites). We know our background! We have a history! We are Somalis, not a generic term called Black. The same reason why a Nigerian shouldn't accept the term also!

      +Cushitic Man your opinion on the word "black" although it has some appreciable value, all your doing is feeding into the perception that the world "black" is negative portrayal when it's obviously not, it's a quality we should embrace. I am a Somali and also consider myself black, simply put, you can be black and have a heritage of your own

      +Topboss there is no such thing as black.
      We are African and Somali period . Black means african , black people should consider themselves as Africans first before we Somalis call ourselves black.

    People are naturally comfortable with others who share their cultural norms. The tendency to identify with one’s people or nation is something Allah has placed in human nature and He has made it a reason for people to get to know each other. Allah has also told us that the superiority one person might have over another is based on that person’s character, moral fibre, and piety, not race or ethnicity.
    On the Day of Judgment, our ethnic origins will mean nothing. Allah says: “And when the trumpet is blown, on that day there will be no kinship among them, nor will they ask of one another.” [Sūrah al-Mu’minūn: 101]

    To the presenter: I have been spending considerable of time in Somaliland in recent years, 6-10 months at a time, 'Jareer' and 'dhagax' as house maids? There is no such thing, certainly not now, and never historically (except really isolated cases). Housemaids were and mostly still are poor girls who come from the countryside. I highly suspect the same goes for puntland, and central regions of Somalia, I don't know about the rest.

    I don't like the word nor should it describe people of colour, the Origin of that word is from slavery. We Africans are kings and queens let's not use this derogatory/ demonizing word.
    I, myself, consider my self as pure African who originated from Africa. The issue with some Somalis is that they think there superior and or better than others. What is key to know your fellow human being, have respect tolerance and no prejudice.

    it baffles me when people say we don't have African features. ummm ya we do. we have East African features. I like how the host specified, ya we don't have West African features. let's acknowledge how huge and diverse Africa is. A South African looks different than a Rwandese person just like they look different from a person who is from Sierra Leone who looks different than a Ghanaian. Somalis are the natives of the region and we always looked this way. We're the descendants of the Nubians and our DNA is close to pure. Attributing our features to Arabs bc they're the closest nation...what? no they're not. how about the other African nations bordering our country are the closest? Let's get this right, our beauty is ours - it's East African so let's not give credit to Arabs where it's not due. we look better. also, we are the motherland and if anything, they have our features. and if you've read up on studies of Somali DNA, it's been found that we are ancestors to the people of a few nations who have the closest DNA make-up to us. Including some in Europe. So...you're welcome world.

    To address the comment made that "Black people do not have a culture." I think first you need to understand what a culture is. Cultural is created when multiple people come together, this creates a sort of social interaction/dynamic/norms etc. African Americans and many other black people who were enslaved were stolen from their nations and cultures . But you have to realize is that when black people regardless of their backgrounds were held together they created a social dynamic that was unique to them because they had something in common ; there blackness and the struggles that came with it . This culture is music, clothing , speaking style, fashion and the shared black struggle/journey. So to say that black people do not have a culture is not only incorrect but not possible . Human beings by default create cultures in the communities and the environment they are around . How can a group of people with a common struggle/journey and back ground over a period of hundred years not have a culture? It is not humanly possible

    If you don’t have strong self awareness of your ethnicity, culture, history and religion you WILL see only the negative in your culture because for the first time you’re exposed to outsiders View of you and you internalise and believe that. When you’re in your own country people only see the best and area we want to improve they don’t say “were bad people, or our culture is bad”. There is good and bad in every culture. If you hate yourself, culture or race look inward and examine why you feel that way b4 projecting that to your community and saying we should be ashamed.

    the whole argument on whether we are black is soooo stupid. we are black, and one of the oldest black groups in Africa (we came before west African groups which has been proven) . furthermore there are many different types of black ethnic groups in Africa. yes we look different to west Africans but if everyone hasn't noticed, south African people look different to west Africans ect WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. there isn't one type of black and im guessing in America because the black Americans are of west African heritage they see the west African look and assume that what makes you "black" WHICH IS WRONG. i think people need to educate themselves on how diverse Africa is. we have all hair types, all hair colours, all eye colours, all shades of brown skin tones. AFRICA IS MORE THAN WEST AFRICA.

    There's no west Africans who live and got enslaved in Somalia. Jareer is one of Somali clans called Beesha Jareer Wayne and they are not slaves to anyone. Since they are one of the most peace loving clans in Somalia, they have faced a lot of subjugation and human rights violations by other major Somali clans but that does not make them slaves and no body treats them like one. But if you talking about where they were from originally, some historians say, they might be originally from Tanzania but there no concrete evidence which shows that. Similarly, researches point out that even other Somali clans migrated to Horn of Africa. To conclude Somali itself is a diverse nation let alone Africa and blacks who deny us our African ancestry are lame and they need to learn some history. The word black carries a diverse community including Asians. India, China, Philippine, Indonesia etc, have black communities but they are Asian geographically speaking and black racially.

    I think it's important to make the distinction that Somalis do not purely marginalize just west Africans with terms such as "madow" and "jareer" but also Europeans and white people with terms like "cadan'" and "dofar" its always just a case of us against them more than racism, even though I do not condone such name calling towards anyone we naturally have this mentality of we are the best and to an extent I do not find much wrong with that because we pride ourselves on mostly religion before nationalism, and half the world hates us anyway but we do note care and stick together which is great. Personally madow and cadan simply mean black and white and I do not find either of them remotely offensive to use to describe people.

    What you have to understand is that terms such as 'black' and 'somali' or 'arab' are very abstract. What I've learned during my study cultural anthropology is that people use those terms to identify people faster and try to put people into boxes. What you consider as 'black' , someone else might view it very differently. What the Somali community is facing for numeral of years is an identity crisis of some sort and that is very unfortunate.

    Africa is not a race but it is an area or continent. Somalis are cushetic in race and very origional i.e they did not come from an other area like Arabia. Somalis look like other cushetic nations. Yes, it is true Somalis used to be very proud by tradition and they used to look down all other races including Eurs, Asians/Arabs and Bantus. If somebody hates that proudness is up to him.

    I know you're going off the cuff for the most part in these conversations, but I think it's important to show a bit more tact and sensitivity when touching on some of these issues. I found some of the jokes to be rather cringe-worthy. Otherwise, interesting view-points from the panelists and an important conversation to have in the Somali community.

    I think Somalis blur the lines between what is their ethnicity and race. We bulk the 2 very different characteristics into one and acknowledge our Somali ethnicity but refuse to acknowledge our very visual blackness. When society looks at us, we are not automatically labeled as Somali but first labeled as black. And even within this initial labeling we correct them and announce our Somali ethnicity. This also creates this fictional hierarchy where even if we are labeled as being black or associated with blackness then we explain how different we are from stereotypical blacks naming features and physically varying attributes we know as being unique to east Africa. From my knowledge, in Somali itself the concept of 'racism' is a harder concept to grasp because this idea of being black isn't taught to them and doesn't affect them directly. When you grow up your whole life being told you're 'Somali' and never being told that you are black you begin to dissociate yourself from the race.

      Why would Somali's grow up being taught we are black? Black race didn't exist in Somali culture, heck even in all of Africa there was no concept of a black race. Our grandparent back home would never use the word black to describe other Africans, they would say Jareer or use the tribe name if they had one. Then the white man came and colonised the continent and now all of a sudden we must bow to white social constructs of race. I'm sorry, I was not taught I was black and I do not accept the social construct of a black race. You sound eloquent and educated but you are ignorant if you think that Somali's not accepting 'blackness' is a problem. We accept the blackness of our skin, you hear it in our poems and folk story, so no, we do not reject 'blackness' as you put it.

    I do for so many reasons. We are poor, we have dark skinned people, we have very curly hair. Curly hair is beautiful, but not everyone knows how to take care of it. And I know Somalis are lazy, so I am ashamed of my people, because they don't take care of their hair or merely cover it with a hijab.
    And we sometimes look good sometimes look ugly especially with long lips and long forhead (i have a long forhead too) or because of weird face shape.
    I hate also how lots of us have uneven skin tone, and the Somalis don't want to solve it! Too lazy + they don't care + they think they can't afford it.
    I also hate how everyone, everyone is hijabi even the beautiful ones. Why! We want to silence those who say Somalis are ugly and prove otherwise.
    And Somalia probably isn't a safe or good place to live in. And even if it was, we like foreign countries more cuz they are better.
    Also, it embarrassing that we don't have a common language (us youngsters). Some speak fluent English and a little bit of somali. Some speak fluent Arabic, some french, Italian, etc.
    So if they meet, it will be a disaster cuz no one understands each other.
    This is so embarrassing.

    Now to comment on this segment
    I think this young girl is very much influenced by Non-Somali's, I can semi understand her point of view and I honestly believe that she is influenced to an extent because ajanibis non Somali these people make us question ourselves, why are u so light/dark, why is your hair so soft/hard. By being surrounded by your people u get an understanding of who You are where your from, all the different Somalis, being around one another gives u an inside experience of different Somali ppl. Somali/ African we are very proud of who we are regardless of how much we dislike certain things in our culture/tradition the things we dislike are also the things we admire.
    "WE ARE NOT BLACK, WE'RE ARAB..." Hahahahah I laugh because it is true and to try n defend those who say I'd say they deny being black because what it stands for today in the world we live in unfortunately

    lmao at features and hair texture. There are many other countries in Africa that have similar features. They're still considered African and they damn well consider themselves African.
    Africans are more genetically diverse than the rest of the world combined. This means that the further away from Africa you go, the less genetically diverse populations are. This also means that two Africans might have less in common - genetically than an African and a European because European genetics aren't as diverse. So looks and skin colour dont mean a DAMN thing at the end of the day. The sooner we look at ppl as ppl the better off we'll be.

    I’m sorry but the people on this panel are not very well educated on the phenotypes of Africa. This is what the girl was talking about, Somalis think they are the only beautiful Africans lol and they are not. They are just the only people who degrade themselves in western countries trying desperately to fit in and yet pretend to be better then other Africans. Have you ever heard of Hausa? Or any other tribe of Africans with features that you like which let’s be real are because they are more on line with western beauty standards? Also the “slaves” in Somalia were not West Africans they were from Zanzibar. There was so much posturing,
    misinformation & lack of intellectual curiosity in this clip it amazes me. I am not ashamed to be Somali but I am repulsed by the ignorance of our people.

    It is unfortunate that the belief by Somalis that they are "superior" than "Africans" is what has eventually led to their own downfall as a country, and it is ironic that countries like Kenya, where Somalis consider to be "African black" countries, are offering refuge to Somalis! God's plan!

      @@Tb-gz4qt Who are "Other Africans?" Sometimes you should see the positive side of colonization. For example, without colonization, I am sure all native Kenyans would still be living in forests as barbaric savages and hunters and gatherers just like their ancestors did for millions of years. But coloniozation and missionary activity brought about civilization, better healthcare, low infant mortality, and the competitiveness that Kenyans and other Africans enjoy on the global stage. That is not to say, however, that colonial powers did not try to suppress and oppress Africans in concentration camps.

    the host is kind annoying. second, jereeer people are not west African. they are from tanzania most of them. thirdly, somalis dont have to level them selves as black or arab. there are different shades of somalis, the main stream somalis(light skin or dark skin), the somali arab, the somali shaanshi who look like arabs but only speak somali, the somali bantu, the barawani and ect. Lastly, we dont need other people to tell us who we are and we dont need to belong to any category of race. be proud of being somali. Dont let other black people who are suffering inferiority complex to bring you down or racist whites. Allah created humans different mads. Choose kind, great human beings in your life no matter what country or continent they come from. by the way, just because you are from africa that does not mean you are automatically black. Almost half of africa is resided by arabs, amaseq and nubians.

    This world is full of diversity but as a Somali it is really hard to formally explain with peer reviewed evidence, our situation. there are black Indians,Arabs or other Asians like some philipinos are black in Asia. the worst part is that i have not come across any written form of history as to how we came about as 'SOMALI' like a whole new ethnicity in of itself that has one language , which is really some MYSTICAL SHIT , given that we were colonised as a nation buy three different countries and have the same religion . i mean why cant we speak arabic or other Bantu languages just like our neighbors in Kenya, Tanzania which by the way both had Arab influence just like we did. Mzambique which is also a coastal country had influence too but you dont see them speaking the same language and all have the same religion. if we were as enthusiastic about this the same way we are about the romans or the persian empires the conspiracies sorounding this subject would be over whelming but then again we are Somali and we generally DONT GIVE A SHIT. i personally feel like we are blessed that we are very very comfortable i our skin with exception of some wannabe s ALAXAMDULILLAH for that but we need to make the world aware of this proud ethnicity we all call SOMALI. .......

    I am Somali and I don't consider myself a BLACK nor an arab. I know that my ancestors were mixed of middle eastern and east African so why would I denied my other half and called myself a BLACK? if I took my DNA test today I know that I am not going to be 100% African which is why I don't consider myself a BLACK. I know that some Somali people called themselves Niggas or arabs because of how they look, for example light skin Somalis like "XAMARCADCAD" they called themselves arabs and "SOMALIBANTU" called themselves BLACKS so who do you think is right or wrong ? we know hat Somalis look so different some are light and some are dark, so do you think its fair to call all Somalis black just because your dark? we Somalis have different ancestors we Somalis are not people from same mom and dad like everyone else some Somalis maybe 100% African and somae maybe10% African which is the reason why some Somalis called themeselves BLACK and some ARABS. we Somalis look so different from other Africans and that is why africans don't called Somalis Africans. Africans denied us when they want and they call us Africans when they have no prove that Africans are beautiful people they say were different types of Africans which makes no freaking sense so I think calling yourself just A SOMALI really make sense. by the way I am not saying that Africans are ugly because I don't want say anything about Allah's creation.PEACE

      +Nabiyaha Cabdi "Black" is a term used when identifying one's race. "Somali" is a term used to identify ethnically or nationalistically. They are not mutually exclusive. You should ask yourself why your need to distance yourself from blackness/being seen as black is so unrelenting...why is it so important to distinguish yourself from other black people besides being nationalistically proud of being Somali?

    • @nabiyahacabdi7180
      @nabiyahacabdi7180 8 лет назад

      I understand what your trying to say but what I want to ask you is, are you telling me that Somalis are 100% africaans ?do all Somalis look the same? I guess the answers are NO because "Somali bantu" looks so different from the other Somalis especially "xamarcadcad" and that means Somali bantus look more like west africaans ,so basically if your Somali bantu you have more chances to be black or consider yourself as ''BLACK'' than a xamarcadacad person, so do you think you can just call all Somalis ''BLACK'' just because of your look? me being Somali is very special to me and by FACT I know that I am not 100% africaan, so if I already know that I am mixed with other races than BLACK why would I follow just my BLACK side instead of both? that is what makes me SOMALI I am from a mixed RACE and I am proud of being Somali.the why Somalis consider themselves as BLACK OR ARAB is because of what is happening in Somalia or how much they hate their own people which consider as SELFHATE. I love all Somalis who are proud to be Somalis just like ME and I hate the white WASHED ones or balck WASHED one. END OF STORY

    • @unapologetica8706
      @unapologetica8706 8 лет назад

      Imperialism/colonialism has made it that almost all people on the continent are of mixed ethnicities --- African-Americans are of mixed ethnicities as well because of slavery. That is not the point. I think what you are speaking on is colorism ie. the way people look. You can be light-skinned or appear more Arab than pure African black but regardless, racially you are considered black. The only point I'm trying to make is that there is nothing wrong with embracing all sides of your heritage but you must be careful of that not be anti-blackness rhetoric or mentality.

      if you already know that your mixed then why is it so hard for you to understand that you are mixed. the reason why some Somalis consider themselves as BLACK is because they want to be called THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AFRICAANS but actually their mixed.

    Somalis are a mixture of peoples. Somalis have been involved in trade with different people over centuries and that means people intermarried and that is how we are! You cannot say you are fully black or fully Arab! You are Somali from Africa! Just like Sudanese and Mauritanians etc Af Somali in itself is almost 60% Arabic and you cannot just say they are loan words due to our interactions with Arabs. I think we should just be happy to say we are Somalis from Africa!

      +Jam Weezeh 60%? are you confusing Swahili with Somali? Somali is well preserved. I think there are almost as much Persian influence on Somali as Arabic.

    • @jamweezeh5563
      @jamweezeh5563 8 лет назад +2

      gdv I think 50-60% is a good estimate of how many arabic words are in our vocabulary. I dont think we can speak one full sentence without there being an arabic word.
      The same with swahili but Swahili is almost towards 80% arabic.

    • @nfnmrm9652
      @nfnmrm9652 8 лет назад

      Jam Weezeh umm .. yes you can. the total Vocabulary that's Arabic in origin are not more than 1000 words and it's mostly name of things like "Albab" "Digaag" "Qalin" etc.... just objects no penetration into the language like in Swahili, Turkish etc
      Our poetry preserved our language extremely well. we even have words for the stars and planets!! go do your research sxb

      Yup Somalia never enslaved people but Bantu peoples from Tanzania were brought as slaves from their lands by Arabs. We had nothing to do with it. Then they had jobs like maids or housekeepers, granted they were treated by shit, and are still this day called derogatory term like "Midgan" and other evil things. But we had nothing to with slavery. Not about that live.

    • @aqanni
      @aqanni 8 лет назад

      LeadersNotFollowers that's another bullshit again. Somali bantus were always there in somalia. Nobody brought them. They are as native as others. But there were Number of people who fled the situation in their country tanzania but that's different different story.

    Slavery was a common thing in Africa back then it wasn’t just Somalis who were involved. Many ethnic groups across Africa including Bantus were enslaving other black people. This is what happens when you talk on topics you know nothing about. You act like it was only Somalia when nearly every country in Africa had slaves.

    The very last legal slaves imported to South Africa by the Dutch East India company were Somali, look it up, it's a fact, and as far as slavery has been do you really think NO SOMALI has ever been enslaved, not meaning present day non-payment in the Arab world, there was no LINE don't enslave past this imaginary line, the Arabs had a don't enslave fellow muslim but believe you me the Dutch East India company had no such promise, it is just a thing Somali tell themselves as a sense of pride but it's false pride because there have been Somali and Ethiopian slaves, imported to India, etc. I am a proud Jareer and know African both West, East and South African cultures, Africa has the most diverse people on the planet, Khoikhoi look nothing like West African and are much lighter skinned and since THEY are the original African what does that say?
