Solo played by Evan Hughes
A seven-page in-depth drum transcription of Philly Joe Jones [including what he plays to accompany the in and out melodies, as well as all "fours" exchanges]. From the master take.
-- horn melodies are shown above the drum staff
-- Sixteen-measure intro (great hi-hat work)
-- AABA in melody
-- Philly Joe's playing behind eight bars of Hank Mobley's first solo chorus
-- The two choruses of trading with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan: Philly Joe's fours, plus what he plays behind the horn soloists. Timing for Hank's first entrance in the exchanges is noted on the music: 5:28.
-- AABA out melody
-- Coda (hi-hat work like the intro)
This particular track is full of the "slick" material that made Philly Joe Jones one of the best drummers of all time. Listen to how effortlessly and smoothly he plays the phrases. His fluidity and technique are absolutely fantastic.
The transcription includes his hi-hat work in the introduction, along with his interactions around the melodies and eight bars of Hank Mobley's first solo chorus, two choruses of trading fours with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, followed by the out melody and coda.
You'll be reminded just how remarkable Joe's drumming is when you try to play these phrases.

The drum heads from 1959.
It's great to see that there's young drummers out there that still respect the traditional form of jazz drumming and swing ,it took a lot of effort to study and transcribe this music .Philly Joe was definitely one of the slickest drummers in the history of jazz I appreciate the efforts that you have taken for Philly Joe was also very special to me he was my friend and I was fortunate enough to live with him for 6 months Philadelphia in the 80s keep Philly Joe's spirit and music alive for generations to come ,again great job.
It illustrates what the best jazz comping genius Philly was.
seriously man. when i got into bop drumming, i thought i wanted to be elvin but really i wanna be smooth like Philly then develop my own style
I love it that young musicians are still hearing this stuff!
Man this is so killin'! You even tuned the kit to match Philly's sound. That snare is spot on!! Kudos my friend.
This solo just looks so cool to watch.
Beautiful playing by Evan, thank you, loved watching him.
The drum heads probably are 50 years old, (haha) and they are not my drums. My drums have much newer heads. The kit belongs to Don Sickler, and they live at his studio in NYC. There are vintage Slingerland's that were givin to him by T.S. Monk (Thelonious Monk's son and a great drummer). They are definitely worn down, but they have been played by almost every great jazz drummer in the last 30 years, too many to name, so at least in the worn out heads lives some tradition...
Damn, you play great! Your sound and feel is so (for lack of a better phrase) authentic and hip! Outstanding!
Hey, great job on this Epic track. I really am impressed by this drummer, his attention to detail, timing and feel.
Wow, jazz does have a future! Great playing man!
Great job. I'm glad to see the younger generation keeping this style of music alive. You did an excellent presentation.
this is great man! we need more Philly transcriptions!
You emulated Philly's sound very effectively. Even the snare sounds pretty much identical :)
cant believe someone disliked this, great effort man you were really on point and yes the trading is brilliant, what an incredible drummer philly joe was.
GREAT work man! Props to you!

really nice playing brotha, where did you learn to traditional grip with the ring finger/pinky involved...? to each his/her own...i was just curious. peace~
Gorgeous playing. I just purchased a book called "The Philly Joe Jones Solo Book" and am having difficulty with the transcriptions. Can I hire you to do that? If so what would you charge. Cheers.
20" Bosphorus (super thin, 2 riviets), 18" Spizzichino (2 rivets), 13" old A's
Im sorry but I don't see where the transcripts are on the website.
excellent playing! I want to learn this.
What's that sweet ride you're using? Great job!
awesome! how did you record your drums?
great job. how many grams and size is the ride cymbal?
Fun fact: The only way to achieve this sound is never ever change your drum heads.
He likes the sound that is all that is important. He does not care about what some guy on the youtube comments says about his dirty drumheads. Its his opinion that matters
SHIT THAT WAS OUTSTANDING.
Swingin’ 😸👍🏼🥁
Do you have any issue with the heads staying in tune when they get that old?
holy fucking shit this is awesome
Hi jazz leadsheets, i had a problem trying to buy this transcription... there's an error order, my transaction has been declined because i don't know what is the coupon code!!
Help me!
supperb
I sense sarcasm in this post, correct me if I'm wrong. But the heads and the "tin can" drum sound are as much about a musical drum tone as they are about the feel of the stick on the head. Perhaps you prefer the rounded, dead sound of heavily muted drum heads and the elementary stylings of (most) modern pop and rock drummers. To each his own.
This was good and all, but would it kill you to get new heads?
Excuse me, what kind of cymbals are there?
dig, dig, DIG!!!
Holy fuck, I wish this was free.
Dude, this is badddddd!
its calfskin ?
why? they sound great, no matter how they look.
They are all REMO Weather King Diplomat Batter - but are probably 40+ years old
these are giants who play polished chrome time
Jason Briggs you just don't get it..
Agreed, that guy is clueless.
In my opinion, vintage drums sound better...but not vintage heads. They wear out and no longer carry as full a sound. A couple people who knew Philly Joe and saw him have told me that he put a new snare drum head on every time he played.
No chance Philly did that
How ignorant.
Что с пластиками???(((
Yeah, they are much harder to tune when they're old, but because they are more 'dead' sounding the tuning doesn't seem to matter as much as with a brand new head
It's ok to change your drum heads sometimes
+Pickles do you think it sounds awful? i don't
they don't sound awful OR great to me, but they do look ancient and filthy.
+Josh Smith HA! yea clean them atleast. Sounds great though!!
+Josh Smith they do look that way, and I LOVE IT
And you missed the point entirely.
Go clean your own drums, this dude in the video be jamming!
左手が三連符には速く、8分音符には遅いという、難しいテンポ。
lol
So why do people drive classic cars?
Probably a Travis Barker fan...
think ya need some new heads there bud
Totally disagree..music is in everyone's soul and heart,,not in sheet music..
Jo K. Kats idiot
@@benjamindady4366 fuck you..i have the right to express myself..
@@JoKKats I agree with you on that statement. I don't agree with playing transcriptions unless i wrote them myself, because sheet music can't capture everything that's happening in their musical statements. Doing it myself allows me hear every note played and understand the importance of every dynamic and sound that goes with it. But if you aren't going to transcribe and play along to what you like then you'll never develop as strong as the greats.
why do you cut your hair, or brouch your teeth, or go to the docter?
it's all apart of healthy drums, aswell as enhancing, or not- enhancing the sound of to drum itself
bro just change your heads already
No, that's what gives this specific vintage sound
