I flew on one back in the early 80s when I was in the US Navy. PI to Guam to Hawaii to Bakersfield. Pretty cool. When they upgraded with avionics and in my opinion, the best engines ever by GE, the CF6-80C2L1F. Really reliable!

When I was stationed at March AFB in Riverside with the 22nd Security Police Squadron in 1981 I was guarding the north gap of the AAPA. The fire dept flooded the grassy area between the active taxi and runway. Then they brought in a C-5 and let it sink into the mud covering the wheels. There were all kinds of brass watching, I heard the engines spin up, the crew goosed it. Low and behold she got out of the mud no problem. This was a test. I feel sorry for the Airmen that had to clean off all the mud.

Pretty sure the C-5 is retired completely now from military service. It was replaced by the C-17 Globemaster. A few years ago, I spoke to one of the C-5 pilots, from the ANG. He told me that when they start the roll for takeoff down the runway, they all pray that nothing fell off the aircraft, before they got airborne! I thought he was being funny... But "No!" The C-5's were well worn out by then and he said they looked forward to getting some C-17s in to replace the C-5s.

Check the USAF web page for a list of current aircraft. C-5's have NOT been replaced by the C-17 Globemaster III. It was originally designed to replace the C-141 Starlifter during the 1970's and was put into the fleet in 1995.

The C-5M Super Galaxy exists in USAF Mobility operations because there is currently no other available aircraft of similar capability and size to lift large and numerous items for American national defense. The B-52 Stratofortress is "old" but still does the job required of it nominally after over 70 years in operation. As do all of the 1960's Minuteman III silos.
