Sad those are beautiful trees that easily live a hundred years. Wonder if someone had been overwatering or messing with the soil or had fungus. Always have a certified, experienced, local arborist inspect your trees every few years...not just a cheap tree trimmer
No trees can be expected to stand up to hurricane-force winds. Lucky no one was injured, or killed!
