    Everyone has to stop being so sensitive on how the horses aren’t “probably fed” and “they’re too skinny” and “you can see their ribs” Thoroughbreds are like that, I have two thoroughbreds, both 17.2 h, ex racing horses and they’re in perfect condition. Also the “whip” is actually called a crop. It’s used to make the horse move quicker if by using the stirrups don’t work. Trust me, if these horses were mistreated, their ears would be flat back, they would throw their heads and be hesitant. The seem so lovely and peaceful!

      The Irish firefighter are you even an equestrian? Whips don’t cause damage it’s highly false . I use a whip on my horse because he does not always Listen to my cues to go faster or to keep going with my feet aka heels . I don’t even see these horses acting like their in pain also I don’t even see a scratch from whips on any horses when us equestrians use them do you ??? I also don’t need google to know what I’m talking about it’s called common knowledge and if their is a horse related
      Injury it’s more likely from playing rough in the pasture

    My heart was pounding so hard when the jockey got boxed in on the rail. Excellent timing though making sure you didn't get clipped. I was impressed how aware the rider to the right was and that he made room for Batista on the stretch. Maybe everyone was on good behavior because of the cams.
    If he hadn't had to hold him back quite as long to get out of that pocket I think they would have won by far more.

    Actually, the two biggest problems are racing early before the joints can fully form (before age 3-5) and the traits that are bred for in race horses. They're bred to have far more power than their light frames can handle which is what causes all the breakdowns. Even a horse who isn't a champion athlete doesn't just compound fracture a fetlock by running in a straight line on soft turf.

    You all need to quit saying that the jockeys whip their mounts to death, because guess what? It doesn't hurt them AT ALL!! And ALL owners have to put their horses down when they brake a leg or something else really bad happens, because they are not good for ANYTHING!! Not even being just a pet. I'm sorry if I seemed rude, but I have a brother who is a jockey and he had to put a racehorse down because out of nowhere, the horses leg broke and was hanging by fur and a little bit of skin and that racehorse was named El Darado.. and he was my racehorse. He was one of the best racehorses in the world, but now he's gone forever. )':

      There was an article where a jockey hit a human three times in quick succession and because of the whip and design he didn't feel a thing. Whips are shown that they don't hurt horses! Racing whips are designed to give off a loud noise that startles the horse and they are very light! Educate yourself on the design of racing whips before you call it abuse that they use them.

    • @anamariescrenock7145
      @anamariescrenock7145 7 лет назад +2

      It depends I think, there are different types of whips. And, it is not just the whips that are abusive. Have you read the book Saving Baby? It is really good, I defiantly recommend it! It talks about the insides of horse racing and some horses are killed for their meat if they aren't good at racing. It depends on the owner though. Some people love their horses very much, and keep them or give them to a lovely home when they are done racing. Others only care about the money and ship the horses off to places that are permitted to killing horses for their meat. Those people get money for selling the horse to a meat dealer. There are rescues that rescue horses and save them from that terrible fate though. I don't think racing should be stopped, I just think it should be changed to make it better on the horses.

    Jockeys almost never hit their horses.... Plus, horse racing isn't bad (I mean unless the owner drugs their horse), most jockeys do actually take care of their horse and the thing in the jockeys hand? Is a crop. If they used a whip then most likely the horse would spook and probably run off track :/ Plus, the jockeys don't wave or hit the horse in the face with the crop. They simply tap the horses shoulder, upper shoulder, or neck... Besides, the horses are Thoroughbreds, they are bred for this kind of stuff and meant to be fast.. And, this isn't horse abuse! Do your research before commenting something :)

    • @ella4323
      @ella4323 6 лет назад

      'Tap them on the sholder' did you even watch him hit the horse with the crop? It doesn't look like a tap to me, the horses ears went back signifying pain. And most the time you couldnt see him hit the horse because he was hitting its behind hard. Jockeys just get on the horse, whip it to death then walk off like nothing happened, or maybe give it a pat or two. Idk how dumb you can get

    Based on what I have read on racing not being abusive, it's pretty convincing. I do think a little bit more differently about racing, but I do think that it is unnecessary to use the whip that often and hard. They have to remember that horses are very sensitive and thoroughbreds have very thin skin

  • @VampiricByNature

    Many issues are because they have bred for speed. A lot of thoroughbreds have crappy feet. There are also a lot of problems with microfractures getting worse because there's not a lot of time off given between races. Thoroughbreds knees close a lot earlier than other breeds, that's why they are the chosen racehorses.
    I'm not going to say that there aren't pros and cons to racing. But I have two OTTBs and their rehabilitation did not take years and years. Both settled quickly into dressage.

    There are many ways a horse can show it's upset without stopping and bucking. Pinning ears, shaking its head side to side, throwing its head up and down, slowing down, noises, snorting. A good jockey knows these signs because if their horse is upset they change their actions (jockeys that ignore these signs don't get hired because horses don't run at their full potential; you only get a good run from a happy horse).

    for everyone saying this is pathetic and animal abuse this is not. Many horses are trained for them. Do you know American Pharoah? He was almost never abused. Actually not almost. Never. They are very well taken and not hurt. If they were being whipped I'm sure this would be illegal. So stop saying this is animal abuse or pathetic and stupid because many of these horses are Thoroughbreads and love to run. I've been researching jockeys for more than a year. It's an amazing sport but very sad that you have to be a certain height and weight to be one.

    When coaches and family yell at runners, the encouragement can actually help a runner. The whip is the same type of encouragement; you're not using it to hurt them (it doesn't hurt them), but you're using it to encourage them to keep going. If a runner doesn't like the encouragement of people yelling, they should tell someone and the people should stop. A horse that doesn't like the whip will 'tell' their rider (by responding negatively), and the rider should stop.

  • @72Kraken
    @72Kraken 12 лет назад

    its actually the sound of the whip that affects the horse. its sort of scares him and just makes him run faster. the actual hitting does not have much negative affect on the horse. Plus most horses are used to this and take it just as a signal to speed up.

Have you ever ridden a horse? When they are excited about something, they run to get to it! These horses know that the faster they run, the faster they'll get fed. They are not scared, albeit in the gates occasionally.

    This is probably a stupid question but what's the part in the beginning/middle with the other riders holding/leading the horses and walking, trotting, etc. up and down the track? Is that just a warm-up? And if so, how come they don't do it alone? what's the point of the person holding them? Just wondering. Awesome video though.

      That makes sense, thanks!! although I curious why they can't control them? they have reins? is it just because they're so excited and strong & the saddle's more for the race so not safe?

      Thanks for the info, you definitely did help :) that makes a lot of sense. I guess I'm just used to riding the calmer lesson horses at the barn I'm at :P I've been there almost a year now though (March) and lease too though so now the horses know me and I can ride like 5 of them so they're all different and not always the best listeners and some are young (one,who I don't really ride much yet, is 5), but I'm sure you know what I mean - they're all relatively calm and easy to control in comparison and sound. I suppose some of these guysget really overexcited and hard to control or mean. I suppose it's similar to dog sledding too - if you've ever watched any videos, they bark like mad and are bouncing all over - so I bet it's the same for a horse but a lot more dangerous. And most of the dogs are on chains (except for the rare "chain free" places, I only know of one, in Vermont) or immediately hooked to the sled and the sled's anchored and you practically have to drag the dogs over by their harnesses/walk them over so they don't run around so I bet that's kinda waht the lead pony's do? thanks again for the help :)

      I don't really know, I more just thought it looked really fun when I was little and then I guess I like grew up & lost interest? I don't really know, honestly. It might be fun to try sometime though. But I also don't think I'm a good enough rider to handle them, at least not yet, and would honestly probably be scared hahaha Plus I've heard some things about how dangerous it is for the horses and how some are drugged or mistreated and while I know that's obviously not all of them, they ARE mostly in it for the money and start training them so early, imo, so there's that too. But yeah, I don't really know. I do think it's fun to watch though.
      And I do still eventually want to work with horses, or at least ride them, and train dogs, just not race horses hahah
      just not for me i guess
      so yeah.
      :)

      That's good then :) thanks for the info and yeah, that's true, thanks. I feel like if I was truly passionate about it, which you seem to be :), then I would definitely go for it but I don't know, I don't think I'm that passionate for it now anyways. I mean, I still absolutely love horses, but I think I more just want to ride them for fun, like ring work and trail riding and that sort of thing, and maybe a few shows here or there, rather than something like racing. I think my passions definitely more lie in dogs, music, and kids. Hahah a little bit of photography/videography too but im lazy xD but yeah

    10:26 stuck in a hard spot but it helped save the horse until 10:46 when he saw an opening and went for it. Good Jockey.. It is a tough "sport" for both the Horse and Rider but more so for the Horse unfortunately. Another thing is coming from working with an ex-race horse they are not desensitized to many thing's like random birds, people, etc. so they lose concentration every sec, I think if they were worked with more on that it wouldn't be an issue of using the whip so much or thing's to constantly get there attention... Also, I think Horse Racing goes against Every Natural instinct a horse has, dominate horses will want to stay in Back to Move the "herd" so when you have a Winner they usually are the most timid horse that just wants to get out of there, or you have a battle with the horses wanting to dominate over the other horses by getting in front at first but instinctively wanting to pull Back in order to push the other horses to safety. But, it is what it is....

    Btw,those whips are made of unbelievably padded material that makes a big sound yet the horse can hardly fell it. You should try hitting your leg with a racing crop,it doesn't hurt at all.

    They actually can not feel a fly on their skin but their nerves sense it thats why they flinch but when a whip is used thats what they feel so its just a encouragement to run I only know this from 3 years in equine collage.

    You asked me a question so I answered. I didn't think this was an argument but a discussion; you stated your point and I stated mine. Also, I don't know what area you think the whip is coming in contact with; the shoulder and hind end are two of the toughest parts of the horse; especially a well conditioned race horse. You also have to think; an upset horse will not run well and they only make money from a good run, so a Jockey that doesn't keep a horse happy wont be rehired.

    Does anyone else notice that after the race the jockeys or anyone else really gives their horses a pat and says good boy/girl, they just whip them to death get off and walk away. I do that thought and after riding a horse, even if he hasn't been that well behaved or even thrown me off.

    Spanking a horse does have an affect on them. Some will pout and slow down when they're struck. I've seen runners swish their tails every time they're struck. "Showing" a whip (meaning they wave it past the horses eye) reminds them of their job and to keep going. There was no over use of the whip in this race.

    Ofcourse there is a possibility of both horse and rider getting hurt, but its like that in most disciplines. Its not like either are being forced to do it. Horses love to run, and its what these horses are built for.

    Feeling a fly on their skin is a very different feeling from pain. The hairs on their skin alert their body to the fly being there. Horses kick each other when playing. If it hurt, it wouldn't be play. When you use a crop (properly) they don't feel pain; they barely feel it. If horse's can kick each other without hurting each other, then a crop is not going to do anything to them.

    it doesn't hurt like it hurts us, when flies fly on them they feel something irritating their skin, but when you hit them with a crop it only alerts them its not supposed to be painful

      If your talking about the person on the other horse. It’s because the race horses always warm up and run around a little before the race starts and some race horses like being walked by another horse
