📚 Description: The Squier / Fender Supersonic is a bit of a cult classic guitar that first started under the Squier brand name in the late 90s. These original examples have been seen fetching between 800-1800 on the used market with asking prices of up to $2500! It is no wonder Squier reissued these in 2021 under the paranormal series. The new sparkle blue finish appealed to me - however, I was excited to see that Fender Japan also decided to show love to the Super-Sonic and reissue them under the Fender branding with higher quality parts and better specs! Today, we will take a look at the 3 colors currently offered by Fender Japan on the Fender SuperSonic - Sparkle Blue, Black and Olympic White.

With only 3 springs on a Strat style trem, it is normal to need to retune the guitar 3 or 4 times before it settles down to be in tune, at least that has been my experience.
With only three springs on the trem you are changing the tension on the other strings as you tune. It usually takes about 4 complete tunings until it settles down, more times with new strings (unless you stretch the heck out of each string when initially installing them).
That has been my experience with Stratocasters and its why I always use 5 springs.
The pickups sounded great with overdrive, having no tone capacitors and pots really allows it to open up.
Cool guitars and great demo, you were cooking pretty good there Austin. 👍😉
To me, they look like baby Firebirds ! LOL
Total punk rock guitar. I want one but, of better quality.
Yes sir . Fender friday and a Jimi Hendrix influenced guitar.
The Squier Vista series supersonic were made in Japan too
The reason these wont stay in tune without some fiddling is mostly because the reverse headstock positions the string tree on the wound fifth and sixth strings. They end up catching on the wound strings really badly. Removing the string tree or replacing with a roller tree helps dramatically.
Absolutely spot on and great advice
Correct! 👍
try a mastery string tree (by the makers of the mastery bridge).
¿String, roller tree?
@@sasoning
You don't know what a roller tree is for guitar?
Google it.
Nice to see a fender
Fender Friday!
Not really tho
Fender > Gibson.
Not close.
@@philipbrister there we go with the unnecessary comparisons
@@PachoMoncadaM just facts.
I LOVED the color changing during the demo. Some awesome finishes. The gun metal grey look and magenta were my favorites.
I loved the color modifications. I wish all guitars had a color changing coil tap with a different sound/tone for each color. 😂
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez played a black Super Sonic in At The Drive-In. He actually modded his to be left handed which basically undoes the upside-down aesthetic
All of the Vista series instruments were made in Japan. Prices are pretty much in line with other unique '90s MIJ Fenders.
The blue metal flake is my favorite, with the white a close second. The blue metallic reminds me of a 1970s motorcycle helmet.
Loved the color shifting in the sound demo.
Oh man, that shade of blue flake that you switched it to at 15:52 is like EXACTLY the same color as the flake I used to refinish one of my Teles! I think it was called "Ocean Aqua Flake" if I recall correctly, it's been like 10 years, lol. It looks great on the Supersonic, too!
They look gorgeous, especially the blue one. I'd love to get one of those. I like the white one as well, but the blue is just beautiful.
I had the Squier version and also have a 60’s Ludwig blue sparkle kit and they’re incredibly close
Really loving you having fun with editing colors onto it~
Damn, I love the look of the guitar when it was green screened into that darker green color during the demo, looks beautiful
Never thought about an upside down Jazzmaster and the Super-Sonic at the same time before but now that I have, the Super-Sonic is just the Non-Reverse Firebird for the Jazzmaster
Your transition at the end was 🔥🔥🔥multiple seamless guitar changes. One of your best yet! 🤘🤘
I only know i love the look of the "bullet" truss rod and i wish more guitars would come with that.
Squier Vista series were absolutely fantastic guitars. I did up a friends super sonic with new pickups and pickguard etc and it plays and sounds fantastic. Very comfortable as well - holds up quality wise to my MIJ Mustang from 2015.
Another big thing to note for these vs their Squier counterparts are the standard 1.65" nut width. The Squier versions come with a 1.5" nut width like EB-0 basses and 70's SGs , so it's a much different feel. I'm not certain which is closer to the original run, but I personally really love the smaller width. I'm fine playing small necks, and that plus the short scale length give the Squier version a super unique feel compared to my other guitars.
"Which color do you want this guitar to be?"
Trogly: yes.
The blue sparkle is a throw back to when Fender owned Gretsch, which was in the early 2000s
That’s sweet nice dark fretboard and I dig the bass boat flake . The blue all the way!
0:59 I love that finish
Having the bridge pup angled forward is fantastic. Will give it a different tone.
Sunfire orange sploooooooooooge
Agreed
Greetings Sarge
Pickup pole pieces not lined up with the strings!
@@grantkoeller8911 My $.02 Cents
Having the strings perfectly centered on each pole-piece isn't necessarily necessary. The magnetic fields are somewhat forgiving in that they bloom outwards from each pole-piece (slug and screw) What this guitar's somewhat unique pickup placement/position offers is a sound all its own. It could be argued that pickup placement and the omission of the tone circuit sets this guitar apart from the many others available in today's crowded market.
The guitar is indeed different and certainly not for everyone. Just Saying
@@hkguitar1984 thanks
I would rewire it to 1 master volume and 1 master tone, but a push/pull for coil splits. 😊
The reverse headstock allows the high E string to be shorter, hence easier bends and the low E longer to be more taught for less buzz at lower action
That blue one is gaudy and looks like bass boat finish..I love it
Tuning stability is always a problem on short scale guitars. Thicker strings usually help
Hey can you do a vid on the fender powercaster I own one and just like to see your opinion on it.
I'm very tempted. Short Scale, Two Humbuckers, and a cool shape. The ergonomics concern me though. Does it feel like the neck is sticking too far out ? Strange Balance?
For instance, On my Mustang, the strap button is over the 15th fret and on this it seems to be behind the frets altogether.
I used to hate these for being a left handed guitar for right handed people, but I've come around to them. On another Super Sonic video I remember talking about how they would be really easy to convert one.
The reverse headstock is goofy as fuck, but I could see my self coming around to it eventually.
I prefer smaller headstocks like the Tele reversed. The CBS headstock just doesn't work here, even on a model supposedly made after seeing Hendrix play an "upside down" guitar.
I dig the slightly off white, and the classic black, but the sparkle blue is something else 🦾
i used to have a really low serial number squier super sonic, wish i kept it
Omar from Mars Volta has a few of the Vista ones, which he does play lefty! Really wish us lefties would get a version:(
This entire video has me screaming: "Play the blue one, and do the documentary on it too!"
I play the white version of this and have zero tuning issues. I did add 5 springs to the back. So, that could be helping, but it's weird that Trog had issues even with the trem blocked.
The no tone problem could easily be fixed by a guitar tech with an orange drop capacitor and some solder. Very easy fix.
I'm with you, I love how they did the neck plate, it looks a little more cared about being recessed like this one is, and possible less likely to be scratched up over time.
Love the bass boat blue
Really lime the black one.
My favorite is the blue but I’m surprised they didn’t offer any with a maple fretboard. I prefer rosewood but usually with fender, my favorite finish won’t be matched with my favorite fretboard…
Nice to see a Fender Friday! Strange quirky guitar overall but kinda cool in its own way. I think once you get the tuning stability issue settled it wouldn't be a bad gigging guitar. I love the clean sound in the middle position and it actually sounded pretty good with some distortion, would love to see it and that metallic green finish if that was a featured color. Overall I like the blue sparkle and the white the best out of these three
Hmmm.. even if you're doing volume swells or what have you they are still backwards.
I like the black the best out of the three. However, that green sparkle and charcoal gray sparkle you edited in take the cake in my book. Those should be offered as colors across other Fender models.
I have a 2020 light blue supersonic and love it for the 24in scale and 40mm nut width. Those spec are hard to come by at a good price; Sounds fantastic as well! I paid around $350 from sweetwater.
The picks on the 2020 squire are called atomic pickups, my bridge is at about 14 and neck at 10, pushes gain really well.
I must be lucky because i dont have any tuning issues. 🤘
Ooh yeah! The white on white is gorgeous! And that neckplate is so interesting. I also like the strap button position.
If you wanted to change the volume knob positions, you could swap them over.
The distorted tones sounded so gorgeous!
PS. Love seeing you do more Fenders these days. Keep them coming.
Dude! I remember these! I wish I got one back when they reissued them.
i have a bullet neck rob too.it’s on my black custom samick
"Bass boat blue" ! lol
😆
Aloha from Hawaii I really love the blue sparkle in that upside-down headstock for I would love to have one of those
Nice to see a Fender on here. I love the bass boat metal flake.
Once again they erase the one spec that made this model interesting to me, the skinny nut. They did the same with the 2013 Fender version. Just sad. :(
Thanks for spreading awareness about this model in general, though. I bought the Squier Paranormal one a few years back, and it has turned into probably my favorite guitar over multiple Fender guitars (vintage and modern).
If you add coil splits to the Paranormal, it turns into a very versatile and cool bit of kit.
I have a 2021 Albert Hammond Jnr. Stratocaster which doesn't have the 75th anniversary decal on the back of the headstock. I just wanted to mention it for the sake of accuracy, as not all Fender models built in 2021 got that decal.
The Vista series Squiers were made in Japan
Ugh, that bridge PU seems too bright for me. I don't like Fenders much (besides a Tele), but I've owned really nice, higher end Strats, and tuning was always an issue, but there are a few things you can do to make Strats more user friendly:
1. Ditch the stock string tree altogether, or install a roller tree (as someone already suggested). If you install a roller tree, skip #4
2. Make sure the nut grooves themselves are smooth. If not, take a very fine thin file to smooth them out
3. Keep the nut lubed with either graphite or Nut Sauce
4. Wind the strings UP on the post, not down. You want the string pull to be perfectly straight (taken from EVH)!
5. Make sure your tremelo is absolutely flat and parallel to the body
6. For vibrating trem springs, put some foam inside of the springs themselves. You can cut out small strips of soundproofing foam or something similar, and use a few inches of an old guitar string to fish them thru the springs
I always like the different content. I don't have much use for Strats, but even as a hardcore Gibson guy, I also get tired of everything Gibson. Nice to see it get switched up!
I think as he's not used to trems that he tunes it once and then plays it, rather than the usual few times to get it stabilized and evened out because when you tune 1 string up to pitch, it pulls the other strings up with it where they go flat and outta tune.
@@cataclysmicconverter Good point. I hadn't thought of that for some reason
I would change the tuners with some Grovers, as someone suggested roller tees and a bone or roller nut. A black metal flake with gold or silver flakes would look, killer!
I had a vista's series supersonic, should have kept it
Ok. What's with the cool color changes? That light metal flake blue is absolutely beautiful! That's the color I'm repainting my '65 Ford Ranchero.
niceto see you doing a fender review instaid of a usual les paul inspection
The darkness of the neck on the sparkle blue is spot on. And let's not forget, I said sparkle
Coming of age in the mid- to late-'70s I used to loathe the big headstock, TV logo and bullet truss rod, probably because CBS/Fender was really at its nadir by then and those features were associated with the decline (along with the three-bolt neck). Now, I really like the look!
I have the Paranormal Squier. Good guitar, but it needed a setup and fretwork (like most Squiers). Also rewired it for a single volume/tone instead of two volumes. The humbuckers are hot AF though!
You need to see the Squier Super Sonic of Omar Rodriguez Lopez. Is totally modified for left-handed players and hardcore songs
Is it the scale length?
I nearly bought the Squier version but instead went for the Jagmaster instead . It was a pretty nice guitar . The shop i got it in had the Supersonic in the blue and silver , but the sparkle finish put me off as i already had an Epiphone Les Paul limited edition in red sparkle and bigsby trem and i wasnt keen on it .
I wish Fender would put out a blue sparkle finish on a lefty. It’s my favorite finish of all time.
I like the blue flake but I’m an old Hot Rodder!
Please more fender friday trogs I love your content but I also love fender
These guitars are so cool!
I think with the 24" scale length, you need heavier strings like 10-52 or something to keep it in tune.
The reverse/ upside down body looks great but they should’ve left the headstock normal
Being a fender guy i like them all but the blue would be for me
One of the only notable players of this is Omar Rodriguez (At The Drive In) who is left handed so he plays it upside down
0:30 in and we have a Dread Zeppelin sighting!
Always love a Fender episode
17:14 i swear it looks like the pokemon Ditto
What gauge strings are on that? I have a lot of short (and shorter) scale guitars and the shorter the scale length, the heavier the strings to avoid tuning problems. I'd consider at least 10-52. Normal sets will have the strings too slack and they will be hard to play imho
That's exactly what I put on a little Mustang 90 I picked up. P90s definitely sound killer on it IMO. He always has tuning issues with trems.
Not a fan of boat seat glitter but I like the black one and the white about the same. What would take the white one I'd rather see a black pickguard or even a tortoise shell.
It's kind of a Firebird for Fender
Is it just me or is the low E string a wee bit close to the fretboard edge? Can't help thinking the neck alignment needs re-set and the screws nipped up, especially with the strap button as it is.
Would be cool now if you got the Squier version to compare and contrast. Not for any particular reason just for fun
Like the white version. The red sparkle looked great too. These guitars always excelled at that raw sound.
NGD for me, yet another Epi 335 this time the all gold model from last year.
I think i might have a problem...4th Epi 335 in the last 9 months.
I got an Epi ES-335 last year and it's flawless with a great chunky neck!
sounds freakin cool with the distortion who cares if its in tune
I would love for you to find a Fender Dick Dale signature.
My sparkle blue one arrived from Japan to UK yesterday I bought after seeing this, dropped of at my luthier so have the trem locked and upgraded tuners possibly fitted. We were amazed at the buid quality, its at least as good as my californian fenders and it feels fantastic to hold. The gig bag is the nastiest thin rag ive ever put a guitar in 🙂
To be honest it might be the best left handed guitar I've ever played
I considered one of these, early on, just because of the look and vibe. Two deal breakers:
24" scale. I might adapt to it, but even a Gibson scale seems a little short to me; I usually use a gauge heavier on those.
Upside down headstock. Umm...No.
I love the two volumes; if there is enough wire in there, their positions could be swapped out.
Shape, cut and neck joint all very cool. I love how you mutated the color during the demo, but the black is still my preference.
Two things I may have missed:
Are the volumes independent?
And, what was the weight?
Regardless, nice one Trog.
Not a fan of short scale anything myself. I think Fender mostly did this with the Music Master, Duo Sonic, Bronco, Mustang, etc. for students/younger people. But then there was the Jaguar, too, which was even more expensive than the Strat and Tele initially because of all the tonal bells and whistles circuitry.
All things considered, I'm digging the blue one! First time I've ever groved on a super sonic personally... Tuning stability issue could be as simple as an unstretched set of strings, could be.
Where is Bertha Butt and the Butt sisters?
I've heard a lot of players putting heavier string Gage for shorter scale guitars to help with the tuning.
Love the big blue sparkles!
Seen a lot of people complain about the super sonic not staying in tune when these came out.
My dad has one of the pawn shop super sonics
136000 YEN is
$1,049.75 United States Dollar
I lived in Tokyo, Japan for 4 years with the USAF Band of the Pacific /Asia, stationed at Yokota Air Base. 2002-2006, I bought many Japanese guitars, one of which was a Fender Japan 62 reissue Telecaster at a yard sale for 4000 yen, (38 dollars)!!
Dividing by 100 usually is the rule of thumb, but even better with the exchange rate lately.
I have the Squier Paranormal version and it's great 👍 a rock machine
✌🇺🇸👍
01:37 aaaaat thAAAAaaaaat
Trogly gettin down on the Black Sabbath! 🤘🏼
Salutations Austin!
Interesting guitar, for all intents and purposes it is essentially an inverted Jazzmaster/Jaguar body, but the scale length has been reduced and the headstock is also inverted.
Tuning stability could be improved with either a roller string tree or a graphite string tree 🌲
As you mentioned, it sounds like it is aimed at grunge and punk guitarists.
I think I would prefer it with a standard Fender scale length neck and fretboard, although I do like the blue sparkle finish, it’s too bad that they don’t offer it in more sparkle coloured finishes, however, it probably is a good choice to use a poly finish on them.
I would have to noodle around on it for a while to see what I would prefer to play on one, but very likely, some vintage Black Sabbath material would sound good on one, like “Into The Void” possibly, or “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”.
Thank you for posting these videos!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!

I like the purple one!
