- rory needs to chill with all these absolute behemoths of books. but i had so much fun trying to live in stars hollow for a little bit. i hope you enjoy this vid as much as i loved making it!

Authors I associate with Rory: Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Dorothy Parker - basically all the women lol ( that probably says more about me than her cause we all know she reads plenty of (white) male writers in the show.) - one book I love that she reads is ‘letters to a young poet’ by Rilke.

i’m reading the unabridged journals of sylvia plath rn 😭 i’ve been wanting to read it forever and then i rewatched gil. girls and saw her reading it and i was like “okay, that’s my sign, i need to read it”
i just loved the earlier seasons of gilmore girls, when rory was just a 16 year old girl who loved reading books. i felt like the charm in the beginning was the small town vibes, with luke's and the inn. they totally ruined that later, don't even get me started on season 7. (spoilers) - rory just doesn't seem like the kind of person to quit school just because some old man told her she "doesnt' have it". she's been painted as sensible and smart, who always gets the task done, it was just weird seeing her lose motivation for YALE just because of one comment. not to mention how much she depended on her grandparents (not only for money) but also for housing and everything in general. it takes away from the initial small town girl with big dreams persona. at first she was grounded, and the show was (sort of) realistic. in the end she was handed everything and fed by a silver spoon, which rarely happens to anyone, struggling is ok, characters are not supposed to be perfect, but i would like to see her have REAL world problems. i didn't like that she could always just run to richard or emily every time she had a problem. given her upbringing, i would like to see her become more independent and not rely on someone else. that is majorly why i liked some part of season 4. in the end she became spoiled and rude along with entitled (flashback to, but i'm a gilmore!) that was quite a rant huh?
hahahha i don’t hate the later seasons as much as most ppl but i definitely understand all that!
It would have been SO much better if she didn’t run to Emily and Richard’s and just started working on other low payed jobs, like Lorelai herself, it would have given her such and interesting character development
But that’s kind of what made the show even more real, she couldn’t find a good job because she always thought that because she was smart she could have any job she’d like and wanted to have a big job without going from a small job to a big one, I love Rory but I think they wanted to show that her family always treated her like she was the best, she couldn’t handle a critique because she was never used to it, and that’s what most “gifted” kids go trough when their family always praise them because of their “natural” intelligence but when someone doesn’t and say they’re not that smart, they don’t know what to do and they fall apart but I do think Rory would have recovered from it quicker than what the series showed. And i really liked how they showed that when Rory became older she’d accept whatever her grandparents would give to her (because that’s what they always wanted to) and how when she went to Yale her whole atmosphere changed because of her new relationships with rich people, so I think she also wanted to show that she also had money (even if it was her grandparents money) and that’s when she became more spoiled because her grandparents always treated her like how they’d have liked to treat Lorelai.
exactly! your point makes so much sense. on the topic of lorelai, i have to say, even though she is insufferable as a person, she was always independent, and she always expected rory to be independent too. it was a smart move from the writers side when they made rory dependent on richard and emily since her mom was so against it. and thats why in the end, lorelai was successful. it was interesting seeing rory in season 1, living a completely different, grounded life, compared to season 7, where everything was practically handed to her. the storyline makes sense. but i would have LOVED to see her jump back from the rich kid lifestyle and finally do some hard work yk.
I also liked the earlier seasons better. I do honestly see her getting lost because she has never really been told she couldn’t do something or that she was bad at something. In fact, if you go back to the Rory and Jess car accident Jess makes a comment about her being a hot shot reporter in a war zone and she looks like she is going to have a panic attack. One comment!
And she does have the kind of support system that allows her the best preparation for a successful life and also she really will never need to succeed on her own.

The scene that was imprinted into my mind is where Rory recommends Jess to read Ayn Rand. And yes, she is a "political nut!" It was only a yikes after I found out who Rand was, but oddly fitting of Rory's decline as a character lol

The book I associate with Rory is Moby Dick since that’s what she was reading in the first episode (Dean says so). My favorites are Paris and Jess.

ahhh I read Anna Karenina over one summer when I was in high school, and it worked really well with my whole moody & dramatic teenager thing I had going on then, haha. haven't read The Year of Magical Thinking yet but it's definitely on my list since Slouching Towards Bethlehem was so good!

gilmore girls is my favorite! i have rewatched it so many times!! this was so fun to watch. i feel like rory mostly read classics and i've tried reading anna karenina but i've given up twice lol

i think of rory when i see virginia woolf books , and recently i've really been starting to like rory like how i did when i first watched the show (esp the early seasons). idk if it's because we're in fall rn, i took a psych class last year and im psychologically analyzing her, or bc she gives me nostalgic comfort, but i think i accepted her and her turnout and it's easier to watch the show this way. ps: i strongly dislike her in the revival though lol

I think Anna Karenina is called Anna Karenina because she is the tragedy of the book and her actions influence everyone else in the book
So while she doesn't necessarily feel like the main character she certainly is the center of the story

My fav is Emily Gilmore of course! She is a savage and classy woman ❤️. I associate Rory with many books one of them must be The bell Jar (amazing book) 💖

I started reading Anna Karenina a while ago and let’s just say that i got bored after that first 2 pages. I didn’t know how to pronounce the names and it got SO confusing. 😅😂
You did not miss a single thing in it. I promise. Even Tolstoi himself was bored of it half way through.😂😅
I love Logan and Dean! They are my favorites and honestly, I can not pick which one I prefer.
The book I most associate with Rory is Franny and Zooey because of the time when Jess sneaks into their house and Lorelai catches him and he prentends he is looking for that book or something. Concidentally Jess is my fave character alongside Emily ofc.

i most associate the bell jar with rory! it seems to be referenced fairly often on the show, and every time i think of the book i think of her. i also associate northanger abbey with her as she is seen reading this twice - plus it’s one of my personal favourites! my favourite character is rory, but besides her definitely logan. he’s an aquarius like me and i don’t know i just absolutely love him.
ps - yes, i still love rory the most despite all the very human mistakes she made. while her character development was not perfect, whose is?

Idk what book to associate with Rory because she reads so many, but my favorite character in Gilmore Girls is Lorelai, because I'm basic I guess. She definitely has some issues (especially with commitment) but if I were ever a mom, she's who I'd want to be like.

My favorite character in Gilmore girls is jess I absolutely loved how his character evolved in the show and seeing him become a better person I really wish that he and rory get back together but rory doesn't deserve him unlike jess rory hasn't changed for the better in a year in the life shows that I really didn't like it

I worked at the Kurt Vonnegut Museum in college for a while and Jess is the only character I've seen reading Vonnegut on this show so that's some points in Jess's favor!
Also the entirety of Anna Karenina taking place on a train would have improved the book 9000 percent imo

@@TheVillainsQuest this is not what I have extrapolated from this book. Of course being it a classic from 1800 not every part of it will reflect today's society and its values but that doesn't mean we should throw it all away. For once I found it very interesting as an historical piece (given that Tolstoy researched for like 20 years to write this novel) and also I found that Tolstoy illustrates beautifully his perspective on history and its protagonists through both the plot and characters. But everybody has their own taste on literature and that is more than fine! For example I find Jane Austen to be quite boring lol sorry I would have elaborated more or better on this topic but as you could probably tell English is not my first language lol

I'm also Team Jess and like Logan even though he's kind of a dick! One of the images that immediately comes to mind when I think about Rory and books is her on the bench reading The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, and NO I'm not just being biased because I love Sylvia Plath and The Bell Jar is my favorite book. I just think it's a still that's used all the time online so it's ingrained in my brain! Of what you read here I've only read Anna Karenina and it's one of my favorite books! I have read some Whitman and Ginsberg but honestly I'm not sure which poems in particular.

Luke was the best and Lorelei the worst. I loved Gilmore girls too, but then I re-watched them a couple years back and well Lorelei is just not a very nice or completely sane person. Perhaps I should re-watch it now and hope that turns around again :D
