1970s: Answering the call for help

  • On April 14th, 1970, Distress Centre first opened its doors as the Drug Information Centre, with $20,000 in funding and the goal of providing unbiased drug information and education, street drug testing, crisis intervention and drug research. Overseen by a Drug Advisory Council, in the first year of operation more than 90 volunteers responded to 3,837 calls and 1,724 drop-ins.
