- Ed Cota was really before his time. The definition of a pass first point guard. He was a dream teammate to play with, and put up numbers that were some of the best ever at UNC. But... He didn't make the NBA. Here are 3 reasons why.

He's really respected here in Lithuania, played 3 years in the top club called Zalgiris, even by this day he is one of the best foreign players to ever wear our jersey and the club itself seen a good quality ex nba players like Sonny Weems, Ty Lawson, James Anderson, Boban Marjanovic, Beno Udrih and the list goes on.
I was in the 8th grade at the time Cota was a senior at Carolina. He led arguably the least talented team in Carolina history to the Final Four and nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Final Four history! I was flabbergasted when he wasnt drafted! I was like if Mateen Cleaves and gotdamn Bryce Drew could make to the NBA then Cota should at least made a training camp. This shit is a mystery 20 years later!!!! I understand his flaws especially as a scorer and even athletically but damn!!! I would love to see Ed Cota on Roy Williams staff in some capacity! There's nothing like that Carolina Family!
Better ✔ the team we got now
"Least talented" after i read that i stopped reading ya stupid ass comment.. anyway ed cota is a floor general salute💯
I was in the 8th grade when Ed Antwan and Vince were at UNC
@@astronomical1913 bruh I'm a Duke fan and know that that team was super talented
Arguably the worst? Have you watched this year's team? They are the least talented along with the 8-20 season.
I always wondered what happened to Cota. He was a monster on the court. It’s no way he should’ve gone undrafted. He was way better than Mateen Cleaves.
Cleaves won the chip remember I luvv cota but he wasnt better than cleaves in college
bronx bully cleaves couldn’t hold Cota’s jock strap. Cota had a better shot, better playmaker, they were about even floor generals. Cleaves had Magic backing him. Politics helped him get to the league but he didn’t last long because his skill set was so so.
bronx bully Im not demonizing or degrading Cleaves. Cota did what he had to with what he was surrounded with. His job was to facilitate and run the show. As was stated in the piece his scoring average steadily increased along with his assist. Your entitled to your opinion. I can’t stand UNC but Cota is one of if not the best PG they’ve had. Cleaves was sufficient but the ACC was the best conference along with the Big East and I don’t think Cleaves has that career in the ACC or Big East. I think Cota would have destroyed the Big 10 back then. Jus my opinion... and good look with that Cota request. He Jay Williams were two of the best pure PG in the ACC. Cleaves wasn’t an AI, Francis, or Ja wither 😂 they were/are athletic scorers. Cota and Cleaves were pure PGs
@@jockstrap3509 I remember cleaves hitting 3s to seal the chip he was a better scorer than cota but I wish cota would have had a shot in nba he deserved it
bronx bully glad you still up buddy. I just finished watching Mateen Cleaves stunted growth. Go check it and get back to me.
That’s crazy man he was saucing out there and went undrafted. These scouts see weird things sometimes
The only thing they can see is HYPE.... if u don't have an amense amount of hype around u they don't see u
Facts to this post man you ain't lying they do sometimew
@@dc7236 also facts bro
Would love to see Lawrence Moten dude was a beast at Syracuse
I was thinking the SAME thing
@@lamarrlewis9658 great minds think alike also Lee Mayberry would be a good one
Definitely Lawrence Moten has been one I've been waiting for just like this Ed Cota one.
@@scottsummers9969 what about Todd Day
@@sherrodgreen8418 Todd Day would be good but Anderson Hunt would be better only because Todd made it to the leauge
I was shocked when Ed Cota didn't get drafted. The UNC team in 2000 would not have made it to the final four without him. How Mateen Cleaves got drafted over him is still one of the mysteries of life. Cleaves was a solid leader but skill wise, Cota was head and shoulders above. Cota was like Chris Paul in his day but flashier with his passes.
Went to Mahalia Jackson JHS with Eddie & played ball with him in Lincoln Terrace Park in Crown Heights. Quiet dude but a beast of a POINT GOD on the court. Viva Panama 🇵🇦
Just to confirm Lincoln Terrace still Brownsville lol. But yea right of The Parkway lol. Ed was nice he went to Tilden with my bro and they would chill at crib n ball up at Lincoln n at BRC but was a beast
Gotta love sound bytes from Cam 😂
Was surprised Cota wasn't even taken in the 2nd round. Truly one of the greatest college PGs I've seen.
I suggest everyone go see the '96 McDonald's all-American game, with Kobe, Cota, Bibby, Tim Thomas, Jermaine O'Neal, Rip Hamilton... and one of my favorites, Shaheen Holloway
Holloway 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I still have this on vhs somewhere, I probably watched it a couple hundred times when I was a kid.
Thanks for doing this, Ed Cota is my favorite pg of all time. He is the reason why I am a Tarheel fan today.
Glad you are drifting back into 90’s college hoops now
SOLID VIDEO!!! I'm from NYC and moved to Charlotte NC, And His team(basketball Tournament) was playing before my team in a Regular Tournament at a Rec Center a few years back, he still was shifty! I wanted to talk to him but he left! I was going to tell him what he probably heard a million times that the NBA was hating on him! Dude was a Legend! My son ask me one time how did our guards in NYC Play back in the day I told him to look up ED Cota Highlights! After he watch them He was like teach how to Play like that!! He was before his time for the NBA but in NYC it was showtime!
I just did a basketball camp with Ed Cota and he is really humble and a great person to be around
This was my dude in when I was a kid. Handle was crazy.
Duke was nice. Even without a consistent jumper. Definitely, one of the best passers, to ever come outta the ACC.
My favorite PG of college basketball of all time
Wingate Park legend!!! My Stepbrother put me on to him.....they were both Panamanian. He would be in Wingate Park cooking cats during the summer!! They claimed his Jumpshot was weak.
@Non Conformist it wasn't as bad as they made it seem. I watched his entire run from High School through college. It wasn't Felipe Lopez or Ben Simmons bad.
Wingate park legend but he started at Albany park by lefferts. Used to play ball with him but didn't know he was that nice. He was always a cool dude tho
@@RichieB40444 yea them shits had no Nets on the rim.
Ed would come up to Lincoln Terrace and give cats the business as well. He and His Back court bro Marlin would come down to 391 and hoop with our team. Legend for real
@@ennellesperance1186 facts!!!!! Couldn't go to Lincoln Terrace unless I was with my big cousins back then. Miss the old Brooklyn 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂💀💀💀⚰️⚰️⚰️
Julius Peppers played at UNC
Yep. He went two sports as well as Ronald Curry.
Mcknab over at Syracuse as well
Ron Curry was great athlete. He also had a few decent years in the NFL as a wide receiver.
Wit Cota..
Peppers was like a caveman on the basketball court. I think his principal function wasn't to produce numbers, but to intimidate the other team's players.
Ed Cota I think outside of Kenny Anderson was one of the greatest point guards ever to play in the ACC
Steph Marbury has a say in that too
Lol jay Williams was better then boffum
Not true acc had Mark price, Sam cassel,Steve Francis, Chris Paul, Kenny Anderson, Phil ford, stephon Marbury, Travis best, spud webb,Kenny Smith etc, ed coda was good but did not have a jump shot
3 final fours
No that would be Jay Williams and I’m a Carolina Blue man.
Ed Cota was Highly slept on! He was my dude along with Terrell McIntyre, and Scoonie Penn!
Scoonie was NICE
My favorite Heel and PG ever.
A.R McLaurin mines too
Every game that had Cota and Vince was going to be a highlight reel at some point.
I just met Ed 25 mins ago at a truck stop. I told him I am a Duke fan but had mad respect for his game.
Ed Cota was a force, stayed dropping dimes!!!
Man...."what the freak happened to Mateen Cleaves!!!!!"
Overachiever.
Michael Graham - Georgetown Found out about this guy when Phil Jackson used him as an analogy to criticize Carmelo Anthony.
Yes sir!!! Ed Cota is a killer. Great court vision and an excellent passer.
Great video bro keep grindin Gotta do Paul McPherson or Randolph Childress
Paul was that dude.
Randolph Childress was that dude
@@drutheconsciousgentlemanan9318 I think he did Childress already
Best passer I've ever seen with the exception of Magic and maybe arguably Steve Nash. I've seen lots of amazing passers on the break but I remember Ed Cota was throwing some in the half court where I was like "Whoa"!
You forgot Jason kidd?
I was legitimately seething when he didn't get drafted. Ed Cota was soooo nice with the rock the Jeezy the Snowman you dig? 😎
Finally a real ED my PG of the 90s enjoy watching him should have been in the NBA
This was dope....dermar johnson should be next......and I'm excited about getting my stunted growth jacket
Mike Hill Mike!!!!
My guy! ✊🏾It's coming.
@Jamal Vines aye did david Morris play on that team?
Mike Herman, coldest to do it!! Chicago’s finest!!! Indiana University!!
@@stuntedgrowth you may never see this because a few months has gone by but my nefew told me that Ed didn't make the pros was that he was having sex with Bill Guthridges daughter. Now my crazy theory is that Guthridge was vexed about that blacked ball Ed from the NBA. How is your his possible you ask, well I'm glad you asked Carolina had a pipeline for their players even marginal players such as Pete Chillcutt, Joe Wolf, and some dude Popson. Also Ed Lynch played in the league. All marginal players but at that time all Dean Smith had to do is call a GM and say give this guy a shot, even if you don't want to risk drafting him invite him to your camp. Come on SG he wasn't even invited to a he leagues summer camps? Something's fishy on the boat.
GET THIS MAN TO 20K! HIS STORY MUST BE TOLD!
I still got my #5 white North Carolina Jersey from back when he was playing.
U should have shown that legendary miss off the backboard pass to Vince...
That missed ball is still sailing in outer space. I'm sure Vince Carter still dreams about that sequence
idk y As a kid I always felt like it was a 2 handed, almost from the free throw Alley off the glass that he had too much air on..
It's almost at the end of the video. That shit is legendary tho. If Vince would have made that dunk....MAN!!!!!!!!
Ed cota was crazy that's why I'm a unc fan now because of those mid to late 90s tar heels teams
one of the best pure pg's in college ever
I still follow him 20 years later. I patterned my game after him. Not sure why it affected me, but i was hurt when he didnt get drafted. On an unpopular opinion, he is in the top 10 if not 5 discussion for greatest college point guards of all time.
I went to St. Thomas More with Ed the year before he left for UNC. It was amazing to watch him play in person, and am still to this day disappointed that he didn’t get his chance in the NBA. Great guy too.
That North Carolina team was talented as hell, but they had no bench, they played 6 players and that hurt them every tournament appearance
Yeah in 1995, 1998 and 2000. Also hurt them with poor shooting from their three point shooters
Cota is possibly my all time favorite Tar Heel! I loved how he could pass the the ball and get everyone involved.
Mr. Stunted Growth I have some request. I was a college basketball fan of a totally different era (80s-90s). Most of these guys are probably before your time and you've probably never heard of some of these guys.
Walter Berry- St. John's early to mid 80s.
Pearl Washington- Syracuse 83-87
Richard Morgan - Virginia 85-89
Chris Corchani - NC State 88-91
Rodney Monroe - NC State 88-91
Miles Simon - Arizona 94-98
Nick Johnson Arizona 2010s I think.
I would understand if you couldn't do these guys. The image quality of footage of anything pre 2000 isn't the greatest on RUclips. The only player on the list who is fairly recent is Nick Johnson. Thanks man love your channel.
ED Cota was a beast a legend
Shawn Respert..Michigan State...
Ed Cota in H. S. #Legendary
Please do Eddie Griffin From Phily
Good one
He died ... passed away!!
Requesting the story of Vonteego Cummings out of Pittsburgh....great point guard
Thomson Ga he’s a legend down here
@@patrickboatner8238 My folks from Thomson Patrick....Cherokee and Kennedy Circle
PerrySinatra1 no doubt
Ed made me love the number 5 .he was the first person i heard some one said to me he had his ball on strings like a yoyo .
Thank u bruh, been waiting on this one
I remember on a nationally televised game Cot threw Vinsanity a lob off the backboard on a fast break and Vince missed it. Damn to even attempt that in college was crazy.
He’s my coach now in 2021💪🏽
Your knowledge for the game fires your craft so perfectly bro. I'm Rockin with you. Blessings bro. 🤜🏾🤛🏾
Do Greivis Vasquez next 🔥🔥🔥
Greivis made it tho
Kc Jones made what?
This is my first time hearing about Ed. Thank you for his story and i find it a little odd he wasnt even invited to a training camp but yeah that UNC team was loaded with NBA prospects.
Great work ! Respect to Ed Cota H.S. team mate and Brotha Crown Heights Jewel . Do Bevon Robin from Rice to Fordham
Bev never had a nba game are you kidding me
Good stuff...Eddie not from E.Flatbush?!
I went to canarsie hs and played against ed cota i got busy and he def got busy respect kevin Sullivan was they big man that was highly recruited
*Ed Cota is my favorite PG in Tar Heel history.*
One of my favorite players ever. Dude, your channel is a gold mine.
The Ed Cota flota was my favorite type of layup.
kenny satterfield?????
Ed cota is basically the reason I fell in love with being a point guard. 3rd grade ish I just wasn’t feeling it..then I saw Ed. Then I feel in love and went on to set asssit records for my high school. Ed was the one who make ball seem fun to me. He showed me it was entertainment
I was a big North Carolina fan I wish they would have won the Nat'l title that year it was Ed Cota at the one, Shammomd William's at the 2,Vince Carter at Small, Antuwan Jamison at the Power, and Freshman Brandon Haywood at Center, I think he was the starting center
I’m loving these 90s joints. Can we get that Randolph Childress tho?
Randolph Childress carried Tim Duncan on his back in college. And he always lit up the Tarheels.
ED was the man. I admired his game
Do one on Jacque Vaughn from Kansas dude was a beast
This man is the greatest true point guard that ever played college ball.
Ed Cota was one of my favorites to watch even as a GA Tech fan. He played the point with a true genius level understanding of the game.
Cota to Carter highlights? I remember watching them as a kid and being in total awe!
He played at St Thomas more in Connecticut for his prep year
NBA missed a great player on my favorite heels Ed Cota!
he played in the league. some preseason games for knicks
Ed cota is the reason I became a UNC fan back in the 90s
This is a awesome channel I’m glad I stumbled upon it now I gotta go back and look at some old videos and catch up on some guys that I always wondered why they didn’t succeed on the pro level...sadly it’s all about systems
I love the new thumbnail style!
Hats off to you brother! Right on! Peace.
My dude ed Cota from Brooklyn ny Tilden high school, camron talking about Kevin Simmons the big man
Ed Cota was the truth even though I can’t stand UNC...... You should do one on Terrence Morris from Maryland I though he had the perfect NBA body and skill set
Cota is one of my all time favorites. Seemed down to Earth to. Ran into him at Wendy’s in Chapel Hill with my roommate in ‘96. Talked to us for a bit when we complemented his assist total the night before.
thank you for putting the missed off the glass alley. still my favorite dunk of all time
I still remember watching that live, it was the greatest alley-oop attempt ever!
Billy Owens,Sean Higgins,Marcus Liberty,Rodney Monroe,Todd Day,Marcus Hatten
Rodney Monroe....💪
Keep up the good work STG had no idea about this dude until this video so many Latin ball players from the Eastcoast that never made it
Big reason I became a Carolina fan was watchin Cota. Used to try to high dribble like him. Do the wrap around the back dribble and passes. Talk to any Carolina fan over 30 years old about and they’ll tell you he’s still loved and missed. One of my all time fave Heels.
Camron actually hooped
BLAKE DA GREAT was that a question
Dont mean he was nice...
Word on the street is he was actually pretty good.
@@buzzerbeater3350 he was all American for both schools in the city with a strong game

Have you done Hakeem Warrick? I'd like to see one on him

THON MAKER was a killer comin out. Where he at? good work on these videos too my guy!
And make your subs public . It helps us know how much you need your channel to grow man. Come on work wit us
And a future hall of fame defensive end by the name of julius peppers. Dope squad!
Please do Randy Livingston or Jamie Brandon. Both LSU players were supposed to be stars. Jamie Brandon was on famed King High School in Chicago. Also you please do one on Rasheed Griffith from King High School. He chose overseas over the NBA. He played Center on Wisconsin’s team that featured Michael Finley.
Remember Rashard. Him and Rasheed among the top centers of the 93 class.
Cota was a beast I liked this unc squad
This mans handles were crazy good. On par w cp3
man ed cota was my nigga at unc playin wit vince carter and jamison bru was a beast
Used to play ball with him at Albany park. I wasn't that good cause i used to play handball and it would swell my hands up and messed up my dribble. We all just played all day. I never knew he was that nice till I was watching a Tarheels one day and saw him. 1 thing I remember, he'd drain a 3-pointer outta nowhere. After watching him at NC, i realized how nice hw was
He played in prep school with a kid I coached he told me he was the best point guard he ever played with
Wow!!!! The NBA definitely missed out on a great talent!!! Definitely would've been nice to see him in the league.
Ed Cota was an incredible player with a lot of talent i knew that he would be a great player from the first time i saw him play as a kid. The NBA definitely got it wrong he was better than many of the players that are in the league now he made everyone around him better. Keep being great my good brother your big brother Marvelous Mark feom Troy Ave.
This was a great underground legend story... #Respect
Great content as always... this guys played with tons of McDonald’s All Americans and made THEM better... definitely should’ve gotten a chance... I’m glad he was able to extend his career in Europe, but would’ve loved to see what he could do in the L cuz his passing and playmaking was special
Yo the numbers 42 on north Carolina that he keeps showing is kris lang my cousin
