  • Ed Cota was really before his time. The definition of a pass first point guard. He was a dream teammate to play with, and put up numbers that were some of the best ever at UNC. But... He didn't make the NBA. Here are 3 reasons why.

He's really respected here in Lithuania, played 3 years in the top club called Zalgiris, even by this day he is one of the best foreign players to ever wear our jersey and the club itself seen a good quality ex nba players like Sonny Weems, Ty Lawson, James Anderson, Boban Marjanovic, Beno Udrih and the list goes on.

I was in the 8th grade at the time Cota was a senior at Carolina. He led arguably the least talented team in Carolina history to the Final Four and nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Final Four history! I was flabbergasted when he wasnt drafted! I was like if Mateen Cleaves and gotdamn Bryce Drew could make to the NBA then Cota should at least made a training camp. This shit is a mystery 20 years later!!!! I understand his flaws especially as a scorer and even athletically but damn!!! I would love to see Ed Cota on Roy Williams staff in some capacity! There's nothing like that Carolina Family!

bronx bully cleaves couldn’t hold Cota’s jock strap. Cota had a better shot, better playmaker, they were about even floor generals. Cleaves had Magic backing him. Politics helped him get to the league but he didn’t last long because his skill set was so so.

    • @jockstrap3509

bronx bully Im not demonizing or degrading Cleaves. Cota did what he had to with what he was surrounded with. His job was to facilitate and run the show. As was stated in the piece his scoring average steadily increased along with his assist. Your entitled to your opinion. I can’t stand UNC but Cota is one of if not the best PG they’ve had. Cleaves was sufficient but the ACC was the best conference along with the Big East and I don’t think Cleaves has that career in the ACC or Big East. I think Cota would have destroyed the Big 10 back then. Jus my opinion... and good look with that Cota request. He Jay Williams were two of the best pure PG in the ACC. Cleaves wasn’t an AI, Francis, or Ja wither 😂 they were/are athletic scorers. Cota and Cleaves were pure PGs

I was shocked when Ed Cota didn't get drafted. The UNC team in 2000 would not have made it to the final four without him. How Mateen Cleaves got drafted over him is still one of the mysteries of life. Cleaves was a solid leader but skill wise, Cota was head and shoulders above. Cota was like Chris Paul in his day but flashier with his passes.

Big reason I became a Carolina fan was watchin Cota. Used to try to high dribble like him. Do the wrap around the back dribble and passes. Talk to any Carolina fan over 30 years old about and they’ll tell you he’s still loved and missed. One of my all time fave Heels.

Please do Randy Livingston or Jamie Brandon. Both LSU players were supposed to be stars. Jamie Brandon was on famed King High School in Chicago. Also you please do one on Rasheed Griffith from King High School. He chose overseas over the NBA. He played Center on Wisconsin’s team that featured Michael Finley.

Used to play ball with him at Albany park. I wasn't that good cause i used to play handball and it would swell my hands up and messed up my dribble. We all just played all day. I never knew he was that nice till I was watching a Tarheels one day and saw him. 1 thing I remember, he'd drain a 3-pointer outta nowhere. After watching him at NC, i realized how nice hw was
