This reminds me of the posters that were made for Mothra's first film. How they portrayed her as this evil looking bug with sharp teeth and how it showed a guy running away from her.
Not gonna lie, the idea of keeping the monsters a secret is actually a pretty cool way to get audiences curious. I bet it was an awesome surprise going to the cinema and seeing Godzilla fight a brand new monster you'd never seen before. Of course, it would never work these days due to pretty much everything being leaked onto the internet, but still.
I'll always remember the Godzilla vs The Thing poster. I first saw it on a Godzilla website during the time Sony and Tristar had distribution rights to the series following the 98 movie's release. They had all the Godzilla movies released at the time in order on the site, but they were all listed with their American titles. I hadn't seen Mothra vs Godzilla yet, so seeing this poster got me excited because yea it got me. I was like" What is The Thing? I wanna see Godzilla fight whatever this thing is." Granted the page on Mothra vs Godzilla had promotional pictures with Mothra, but I thought maybe she was in it along with The Thing, not realizing they are calling her the thing. Of course, years later, I would get Mothra vs Godzilla and learn that it was just America's way of promoting the film. But yea I fell for that poster as a kid. I still really like that poster tho and Mothra vs Godzilla is one of my favorite Godzilla movies lol.
Meanwhile, "The Return of Godzilla" poster sort of makes sense (minus the train) since the Ebirah film was originally supposed to be Toho's next Kong film!
It is weird that King Kong was in the Ebirah posters, since it was going to be a movie, officially called “Operation Robin Crusoe: King Kong vs. Ebirah.” I would have loved to see that. Apparently that word, “Watang!” is another word for tree trunks, but this movie is trying to sell its audience on the fact that “Godzilla vs. the Thing” had an empire by that title (which obviously isn’t in the movie.
Is it just me or does the french poster for godzilla vs mecha godzilla kinda make showa mecha godzilla look like the heisei version maybe its just the head making me think that
Love how the Italian and German posters for King Kong vs. Godzilla only credit three actors from the movie and it's the three actors added to the movie in the US version though the German poster misspells Michael Keith's name. Even more insulting the German poster credits direction to the guy who directed the US insert scenes totally removing Ishiro Honda's name from the poster. And then the Italian poster to Destroy All Monsters , I don't remember there being any western actors by the name of Gary Graham or Kenny Lousen in that movie and Andrew Hughes (who played the minor part of Dr. Stevenson) is credited as lead actor. And the Italian poster for Terror of MechaGodzilla credits some more western actors that don't appear in the movie like "Harris Bartley" and "Alan Baker" and "Mood Stanley"? They still credit the three actual Japanese stars to the movie but shove in all these not featured Western names.
Italy uses kong in every poster because he's more appealing than godzilla to Italians, due to the fact that kong is an American thing Here's explained why the ape is everywhere
The 1st movie poster shown really should have had mechaGodzilla tower over Godzilla. And I'm pretty sure there were 2 Rodans depending on which 3 pronunciation you choose in that poster. If you don't believe me on the 3 pronunciations of the name Rodan then please watch the American Dubbed version of Rodan. But Rodan was still popular and was most likely a callback to the Rodan film where there were two of them and if you look closely they are over top of an active volcanoe.
