    How to set up (setup) an acoustic guitar and adjust the truss rod and action on your guitar. Part 1
    In this video you will learn how to inspect the neck of your acoustic guitar and then adjust the curve of your guitar neck or the neck relief using the truss rod. Only when you have the correct setting on your truss rod can you then get the lowest action possible for your guitar. You will need some basic tools like a straight edge, or a ruler and a pair of pliers and an allen key to adjust the truss rod with, will also need something you can use to measure very small gaps. A good setup/set up will allow you to get the most out of your guitar because it will feel far more comfortable to play and you can get the height of the strings (or action) down nice and low.

    Nice instruction video, but I just want to add a little note. If you do this and want to use the original strings (because you may have to retry a couple of times to get the correct saddle height), just loosen the strings and put a capo about halfway on the neck to keep them in place. Saves a lot of work and reduces the risk of breaking strings. Also, to remove the pins, you can push the loosened sting down into the hole. This wil remove the pressure on the pin and make it easier to take out.

      I used to train surgeons on different medical devices. There is an art form to educating.
      I was at FOUR other RUclips videos on how to do an acoustic setup. Most consisted of a video camera on the other side of the room and someone muttering to themselves as they worked on their own guitar. It always ended with: "Just like so" Just like so HOW?!?. I CANT SEE. IM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM. Or they're NOT using a close up camera. How does one instruct such small measurements as 11/24ths if one doesn't have a camera that can do zoom in to a micro level?
      Kudos to this guy for having the right stuff!.

    This video was very nicely done, with the process being clearly explained. I've always taken my acoustics to a tech for setup in the past. As a steel string acoustic fingerstyle player, I prefer my action on the low side. After watching this video (and taking notes) I now have the confidence to do my own setups. There are some tools to buy, but in the long run doing my own setups will no doubt save me money. Plus I can make sure the guitars are set up exactly where I want them. Thanks!

    Hell yes dude.This video is the truth.
    Not only demonstrating string height but how to calculate how much to sand off was a lifesaver. I was prepared to eyeball it and detune, remove the saddle, sand the bottom, restring, and then tune -- a few times -- till it was right. But instead, I followed your method and nailed it in only two cycles (I stopped sanding about half a millimetre before the line just in case because I knew I gave myself a little too much room with the line and didn't want to have to fight with shims later on). I had to remove almost half the material and was kinda sketched out, but the math is on point and everything came out okay.
    Thanks for this. This is the kind of material I wish more people were making. Long form, substantive, & pleasantly (but not tediously) detailed in both instruction & imagery. Please keep this up.

    Excellent video! Definitely one of the best on the topic. Are you sure your truss rod diagrams @9:27 & @10:29 are accurate? It says counterclockwise (which should be loosening the truss rod) is "to remove a bow" and clockwise (which should be tightening) is "to remove a hump". This appears to be backwards to me. Loosening the truss rod should allow the string tension to prevail and create more of a bow. I'm a noob, but all other sources seem to indicate the opposite.

I recently got a Orangewood Oliver, but I believe the action is too low (low E is 1.5mm at 12th fret) and as proven by my high E playing the identical C note at both the 7th and 8th fret. Hoping your videos will help me correct this.

      @guitar-academy  3 года назад

      @@BonesDT Oh . . good timing. That is a little low for an acoustic. Between this video and part 2, hopefully you will get your missing note back . . 😊😊
      Just in case, look closely at the 8th fret and check it's seated properly at the bottom, and if not; get your strings out of the way and put something protective on the fret and tap it with a hammer to push it in properly. This is sometimes the cure. .

    At 10:28 you show a graphic saying to remove a bow (i.e. reduce the relief) you turn left, and to remove a hump (i.e. to increase the relief) you turn to the right.
    That's backwards, man. Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. The truss rod will pull the neck BACK when you tighten it, CREATING a hump. And of course, the inverse is true for loosening the truss rod... you'll create a bow because you're loosening the truss rod, allowing the neck to pull forwards (towards the frets).

    • @Y0deler
      @Y0deler Год назад +1

      Ahh, I see that you've corrected yourself in the new video. I'll keep my comment up though just in case anyone sees this video and doesn't check the new one.

    I bought a new guitar. I am a newbie. The string action currently is 4mm and 3mm. If I want to get close to ~2/2 this means I would have to sand it down asymetrically? Is this a good idea or should I do the safe bet of shaving of 1mm on each end?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  11 месяцев назад

      If I were you I would sand it down just 1mm all around because anymore could cause buzz 🤔

    • @ricfootball
      @ricfootball 4 года назад +4

      Yes I was also wondering the same thing - surely to remove a hump you would want to lessen the tightness of the truss rod so that the string tension can pull more of a bow into the neck? I have read a few sources now, yours is the best video i've found, really great shots and explanations and i've followed your steps, established my neck has a slight hump and want to remove it. So just at the point where i've got the allen key in ready to turn, just can't decide left or right 😁

      This video is very good until I reached the truss rod adjusting direction because It is the wrong way round in my humble opinion. So I browse thru the comments if somebody would have the same opinion and then I'm here. Adjusting the truss rod is an important step after checking the integrity of the neck, frets and fret board. I think it is prerequisite before sanding the saddle. Any way this video is very good and thanks for uploading. I only wish this matter would be clarified.

    When looking down the guitar, I noticed that all my frets are lined up correctly - no warp in there.
    However, the nut was not lining up. It was a bit higher on the low "E" string and a bit tapered down towards the high "e" - is that normal?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much 😊 . . I slight taper lowering of the strings toward s the high 'E' is normal and recommended. The action is slightly higher on the lower (thicker) strings to allow for the thickness of the strings and a greater motion of the stings when vibrating.

      good question . . yes, because the strings put pressure on the neck and truss rod you need to check for a hump/boy before fitting the strings. Most of the time a twist is noticeable before putting the strings on, but I guess you might find a twist effected by the strings. 🤔

    I haven't watched the new version, so maybe you've addressed this. When taking the strings off in order to remove the saddle, why not just detune the strings a bit more, then use a capo to keep them from coming out of the pegheads, and then remove the bridge pins and then the saddle? I find it really hard to reattach already curled strings after they have been removed from the pegheads.

    • @guitar-academy

      Yes, I've used that system in other videos, for example this one about machineheads ruclips.net/video/5S89bl2LeHE/видео.html . However, working on other peoples guitars I never leave the stings on even if I can because it increases the chances of accidentally scratching their guitar. 🤔😊

    What weight/grade sand paper do you recommend for sanding down the bridge?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  Год назад

      because you're sanding the bottom of the bridge it doesn't have to be too fine and if your bridge is bone it clogs the paper up anyway, so something fairly cause is OK, say 400.

    Strings Tip
    Only partial removal of guitar strings for saddle, bridge, truss rod, internal electronics, and body adjustments, repair/cleaning work, to get those ends of the guitar string's anchor ends out of the way, and keep them orderly.
    You can put a Capo on the 1st fret space, then unwind/loosen the strings without totally removing them from the tuning pegs, then slightly open the Capo's pressure to relieve tension on the strings whilst keeping them in the corresponding nut slots with slight tension (one at a time if you'd like) whilst pulling the slack towards the base of the guitar, and then with the added length of the strings available from unwinding off the tuning pegs/tension gone, remove the strings securing bridge pegs and string's anchors from the bridge's holes; secure the base ends of the strings together off to the side with a piece of string, a Velcro loop, binder clip (guitar strings inside/not clamped to them guitar strings, etc) out of the way.
    And this is one reason why when I'm installing new guitar strings, after securing the base ends into the bridge, I insert the tuning peg ends into the tuning peg's holes and pull back about the distance from the nut, to the first tuning pegs (about 2 inches) of slack for wrapping around the tuning pegs, then tighten them down, making sure the strings tighten in a downward spiral (from the respective center of the headstock to the outside) turning direction, and under the string's entry point into the tuning peg's hole, thus the string gets progressively pulled downward from the nut).
    I also don't cut the strings extra length right away, until after I've played it a bit and I'm sure I like how everything feels and sounds. I usually just loop the loose ends into a circle winding around itself so they don't vibrate and get in the way, until I want to cut the loops off later.
    This technique makes for much faster and easier access to the bridge/saddle and body area in general without the strings in the way, without totally removing the strings as the Capo keeps them in place up at the 1st fret space, and no totally- re-stringing, just do the reverse when finished with modifications/repairs and tune it up - put the base of the strings back into the corresponding bridge's holes, insert the anchor pegs whilst pulling out slack, and turn the tuning pegs until most of the slack is out and the string along the neck and is gently seated in the corresponding nut slot (repeat for the rest of the strings, remove the Capo), then re-tune: because the Capo kept the strings in neat order whilst holding the slack from the tuning pegs to the Capo in the 1st fret position, and the strings are still installed on the tuning peg's end.
    This technique might also prevent having to buy and install new strings if they were previously cut pretty short and too hard to get the ends back securely into the tuning peg's holes for re-tightening after totally removing them, eh.
    It's just a thought, hope that helps speed up your work, and save money.

    Particularly on acoustics, the tone is so much better if your action isn't too low! Especially obvious on the lowest string it's as it starts to sound dead the further you play up the string.

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  5 месяцев назад +1

      I agree up to a point, the tone does improve with a higher action because the air interference between the string and the frets is reduced . . but if the notes start sounding dead up the neck then I would say the relief on the neck is wrong and needs adjusting or the frets need levelling. 🤔

    Hello Gareth I have a question
    Do you believe if I have 3mm or more at 12th fret my stings are too high?
    Can you say if you change strings from xlt or light to medium it would change enough the strength of the neck for making the strings height higher than before..

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  2 года назад

      Good question. The height of 3mm is a good factory setup and isn't overly high, however it could be lowered if you wanted it lower (maybe to 2mm). The thicker strings will increase the pressure on the neck and might take the action up, but if the action moves it will be because of the truss rod, so you'll need to tighten it slightly. Whether the neck needs adjusting depends on the build of your guitar, because sometimes I've found that the neck doesn't need readjusting. I hope this helps 😊

    • @guitar-academy

      Unfortunately that's a loaded question, because it depends entirely on the guitar. I've had students on the point of giving up because of bad guitar setup. Sometimes a guitar can have very high action, making it very hard to play or very low action causing the guitar to buzz and the student thinking they are to blame for the buzz. If you are happy with the guitar, there's not need to get it setup . .
