In Catholic Church we sing this hymns every year during the Lent especially on Good Friday. And every year I still drop my tears singing this song Alleluya praise the Lord
This is an Old hymn. Literally been around for centuries. It was based on a Latin poem dating back to the middle ages. The Latin poem had seven stanzas and addressed various areas of the crucified body (head, hands, face, pierced side, feet, heart, breast and knees). Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) translated the entire Latin poem into German. And built the hymn out of one of the last stanzas of the Latin poem. The hymn was first translated into English in 1752

In fact, I believe when we get to heaven there will be many songs we can reminisce about and trade stories with someone from the first century about songs that helped us (the Psalms); or we could be visiting with someone from the Middle Ages, or the Renaissance or the 1700's (Amazing Grace) or 1800's (Fanny Crosby's songs). Growing up in the Methodist church I saw a few hymns in the hymbook that dated back to the year 100 A.D., another was dated 300 A.D. What an amazing time we will have getting to know the saints from different eras - even different epochs: the world of the pre- and post-Flood; post Tower of Babel; the kingdoms of Nebuchadnezzer, etc. What a history lesson we will get on how God worked through history to bring mankind to himself!!!

God bless you brother...for reviving the hymns that our generation is trying to bury under a mountain of noisy, and nonsense so called Christian music..in other words tons of mindless repetition. These hymns are like a breath of fresh air.

Every time I listen to this wonderful song I think about what sufferings and pain my Lord had to go through in order to pay for my sins. This song helps me to think better before any action or decision I take. Thank you Lord Jesus for dying for my sin.

Today (March 25, Palm Sunday), I played this for Sunday School Assembly and also during the distribution of Holy Communion today. This is a good hymn also if your Scripture of the Day is 2 Chronicles 7:12-22. Another hymn that compliments this Scripture is All Glory, Laud, and Honor, which I played today as the Opening Hymn.

The 7th grade chorus at Salome Townsend (public) junior high school in Tucson sang this at our spring concert in the 1950s. Nobody complained. How things have changed! That school has been razed, as has a nearby elementary school (just after expensive refurbishments) to be replaced by a drug "rehab" center. The neighborhood is now littered with scorched aluminum foil--cooking some kind of drug. People put sheets over their head to keep from wasting the vapors.
