Jess you are a beast! You've been cranking out so many new videos lately and my heart is so happy! I've absolutely been enjoying watching your videos and get really excited when I see I have a new one to watch! Hint this series might be in a secret video you know I'm doing 😉.

Thanks for the reviews! I almost always have the same opinion as you, so I always turn to you when I’m looking for a new book.
As a curvy girl, I’m actually happy when characters don’t have incredibly high levels of confidence because I don’t feel like that’s realistic. I don’t think it’s attractive to always be insecure, but I feel like it’s accurate. I’ll probably pick up the second one you talked about.

You had me in the first half there, I was worried the entire series was going downhill and I was upset about that. Because I love me some Elle Kennedy! Thank you for your honest thoughts... I reallllly appreciate them.

auto-like for Jess + Elle Kennedy!! Also totally get what you mean about some of the tropes in the play. While I did like it, it felt pretty immature in comparison to some of the Off Campus books. Usually, Elle Kennedy's NA romances have a good balance of the lighthearted fun stuff and something a bit more serious but that was kind of lacking in The Play. There was no balance. So far The Risk has been my fave in this new series but I do have high-hopes for The Dare!

i wasn't a big fan of the play either. which is a shame bc i loved Hunter in the chase and was looking forward to his book, but his character fell so flat for me. and everything you said about demi was so true! the latina/cuban stereotypes really annoyed me especially since i am cuban-american/latina myself, they were so glaringly obvious to me. she was so disrespectful to hunter and his wishes to stay celibate, too. it was just one big mess. i did read the dare since i got accepted for an arc, and it was definitely a big step up from the play thankfully! i really loved it, conor was so sweet and he and taylor made a great couple despite the miscommunication stuff like you said lol

I love Elle Kennedy, but I haven’t read The Play yet.... and now I know why all my Kennedy-Loving friends hated The Play. But good to know The Dare picks back up.
New Adult, I can only read in small doses, because the conflict usually is mis-communication (same with contemporary, for that matter), and I really need more. But they are the lighter entertainment that I need when I’m also reading a heavier sub-genre like historical/paranormal/fantasy romance.

I haven’t read Elle Kennedy in awhile. I was thinking of picking up The Play but YIKES! I already know I would hate it. I hate the guys sleeping with everyone and not caring or remembering who they sleep with. Like that’s not attractive at all. And I roll my eyes when they say every girl wants them. 🙄

  • @94AnnaAnna

I feel like the older I get the more I dislike NA. I get so annoyed with characters looking like models, with perfect skin and perfect bodies, every single guy being muscular and having six pack. I'm 26 and I'd like to see someone more relatiable, especially considering that in real life I know maybe like 4 people who would fit into that category of "perfection" like in NA books. Also, I finished university and I don't remember people being that obssesed with sex and hooking up every week with someone else. Is it just me or are these books just unrealistic?
I always hate male characters in Elle Kennedy's books at the beginning but pretty much always end up liking them at the end. I feel like because for a while now the diversity has been such an important aspect I expect authors to represent characters a little bit better (not just throw gay best friend and interratial parents, that's just lazy writing in my opinion).
Ok, that was a rant. Sorry. Anyway, love your videos :)

OMG THANK YOU!! I read reviews of the play and a running theme in the poor reviews was the fact that there was no real representation of her ethnicities other than something stereotypical (like a latinx person salsa dancing..like ok) and the mentioning of her parents. Like if you're going to include a diverse character why not do the research and actually consult with people from that background?? It almost felt like tokenism tbh. I was super disappointed to see that and stayed clear of this book for that reason.
AND your points on if the roles were reversed - PERIOD. points were made. Like it'd be so gross for a guy to be trying to make a girl jealous into ending her celibacy and working on herself. like how did she think this was a good idea??!?!?! And Demi emasculating her ex bc she was driven and knew what she wanted?!? that's HIS problem.
sorry my frustration took over lmaoo but love your vids, as always!

20 minutes of Jessica ranting about books... yes please 🤣. I am sorry you didn’t like that first book though haha. I’ve never read anything by Elle Kennedy. The Play honestly sounded like a “typical watt pad problematic romance.” It did sound like she had a check list of things to include in the book. Every time you kept saying she didn’t have any friends I kept thinking nobody else liked her either that’s why she didn’t have friends 🤣. I also don’t like what you were describing in The Dare how Taylor viewed her body. For me, being a curvy person, yes I feel the same way but I feel like every time an author includes a curvy girl it is almost always the same character with a different name. The curvy girl who hates how she looks. If that is all the representation we get in books it’s kind of sad and I feel almost harmful. It would be nice to see more body positive content across all books and especially romance. Since books usually leave a lasting impression on the reader it would be nice for it to be more normalized to love the body you have so that it helps builds confidence in people of all shapes and sizes. I don’t know if I will read that series because the girl in the Play (I have already forgot her name 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣) was the typical skinny girl and if it’s shoved in your face oh I am so skinny and don’t have to do any work that also rubs me the wrong way. A lot of issues with how her female characters view themselves I feel.

The Dare is even worst... jesus it was painful 🤦‍♀️
The worst book of the series. It was the first time that we have a curve girl as a protagonist.
I was expecting something powerful, it was the perfect opportunity to start a conversation about different body types. I get that this is a new adult, but if you decide to do something different please put some effort.
It is such a bummer when we have a female character that spends most of her time seeking the male character validation. It was such a waste of time and energy. The chemistry and the plot was not good either. I was so disappointed because I really enjoy Ellen Kennedy books and writting, but this one was far from tolerable.
