to put it in simple words :
-Turbo : Stututututu!
-Supercharger : Weeeeeeee!
Mino Assal *wurds 😂
So centrifugal is the best I guess.
Easy Af to install and has the same efficiency as the turbo...?
twin charging: Weeeeeeeeeeee! Stututututu

That's actually wat I was thinkn

Super and Turbocharged engines are cool and stuff but a high hp NA engine gets my respect.

Turbochargers do not increase mpg on their own. A Turbocharger allows the car to burn more fuel. By Turbocharging an Engine, you're in fact, making it consume more fuel. However a Turbocharger allows a small engine to make the same amount of power as a bigger engine thus saving on weight. This is what is making turbochargers such a viable option for small efficient cars.
Hell yeh, that's why my Ford 1.0 Ecoboost is putting out 140bhp at 41mpg average as opposed to the rated 70mpg all other 99bhp 1.0 Ecoboost engines are rated at. (yes I know there is a factory standard re-map)
Everytime I see a crossover powered by a turbo 1.6L I think of this.
It's not only saving weight. A smaller engine consumes less when less power is required (less reciprocating masses, less power absorbed by the services, less friction, more efficient combustion chambers...). When low power is required the turbo almost doesn't absorb power, so the car has the higher efficiency of a small engine. When power is required, the turbo is there for that.
"It takes power to make power" bears repeating when it comes to anything, including forced induction. In this case the turbo is spooled by waste heat power from hot exhaust gasses vs. crank snout belt drive on a supercharger. This is why turbos have taken over the market in recent years, they are efficient and play nice with Euro displacement taxes and US CAFE standards alike. I still prefer superchargers from a hobbyist standpoint, where it's all "smiles per gallon"; as they are extremely simple to install and maintain.
Yes and no...Turbochargers take heat energy (and kinetic energy) that was going to be wasted and recycles it back into the engine for another go at turning into mechanical energy. It does increase efficiency on its own. What you said about smaller engines is valid too.
It bears mentioning that a petrol engine is a kind of heat engine. You put heat in, you get heat and mechanical energy out. There is a thermodynamic limit to the amount of heat you can turn into mechanical energy that is determined by the temperature the engine is run at and the ambient temperature you're rejecting the waste heat to. That is to say: a perfectly efficient engine can never change all of the heat energy into mechanical.
I like how they encourage people to fight in the comments.
Reverse psychology?
I really like fighting in comments. Some people give utter nonsense foolish replys and some reply thugs.
Naaah, I just like to keep a bottle of compressed air and squirt it into the engine. Instant torque ;)
Elias Mikaelsson nos?
Nitrous Oxide isn't air.
You do realize nos is expensive to keep due to the fact you have to refil it everytime you use and some country’s ban nos

Both are the best. Instead of biturbo engines I'd prefer superchargers and turbos combos
Love how you showed the delta s4 during the super/turbo setup that was really smart
NA is my favorite
Healt Desimal im sorry to sound stupid but what does na mean.im new to car stuff
naturally aspirated engine. Basically no turbo or supercharger.
Healt Desimal thanks for the info
Hell yes, naturally aspirated camp here. I'm all about reliability
I have just a regular 17' Civic Ex-t and I just love rolling down my window and hearing the turbo spool up
My dad has a '08 camaro ss, Twin screw supercharged and when he floors it, i get the excited.
Master Cain that's different cuz that's like....MUSCLE. I just have this basic ass car that makes a sound that makes me happy :)
3:59 That's why Dominic Toretto is able to do a wheelie.
Plus the fact his car is rear wheel drive...
Great video. Thanks for making it simple for everyone to understand
Supers my favourite. Natural aspirated sound with a turbine sound together. Turbos lose the NA sound.. but turbos are pretty cool too.
Avais Hussain in exchange you have that blow off sound
andre51605 a supercharger whine sounds great though
Marcos Fierros but turbo with anti lag system is awesome
Andre51605 you get that with a centrifugal too. a centrifugal is literally a turbo compressor housing with a gear box and belt drive in place of the exhaust side
yep and ur engine blows up within 100km
Roots all day everyday!! I daily a 488rwh supercharged Cobra. Tip in is great, and all the power is usable.
488rwh is not much from a 5L engine. 488rwkw (650rwhp) is pretty common for a unopened 4L Turbo Barra. Turbo is much more efficient.
Nor Dic Nobody said anything about a 5.0L? He has the 14 year old SVT Termi Cobra with the old 4.6L, a car that makes 270whp N/A. A supercharged 5.0L from the factory makes around 670-680whp lol. btw look at his name it couldn’t make you anymore oblivious... “ForPointSix 4.6”
Hey Jimmy, 4.6L vs 5L is spitting hairs. Point is, turbo charing is a lot more efficient, as 25% of your engines power is used just to drive the supercharger. Also, turbos are set up to make way too much boost, and this is then tamed by the wastegate to keep the boost down. The net effect of this is massive mid range torque can be achieved without blowing your engine, and he torque curve can be precisely controlled electronically. This torque control cannot be achieved with belt driven supercharging, hence lower overall torque setups to protect a supercharged engine.
Superchargers do have their place though, when precise and instant throttle control is needed, eg in rock hopping, or technical hill climbing.
I can't pick a side because I like both. Even tho turbo is more practical because it uses exhaust gases, supercharger delivers power nicely and instantly. Both have pros and cons but they are both, at the end of the day, good. It's just preference and opinion
I would just stick both in lol
both! More clutch'd supercharger options are needed (98 Benz 2.3 Kompressor Eaton M62 is one) which can essentially be turned-off, like when turbo takes over or for cruising around at partial throttle. An electric TB can be used as a switched diverter valve for vacuum side.
Superchargers are the best! Even the T80 Rekordwagen used them.
xXMountain DewXx heck yea
xXMountain DewXx nope
I’m turbo but I can’t argue with that wine it is awesome but I’m turbo FTW max powaaaa
The typical American 😂
Not the best with power tho, that's why most muscle cars have low RPMs
Goddamn it Turbocharging won't increase your MPG unless you decide to not gain any HP from them
Thanks for making this video
Awesome video which summs up everything important 👌
Aren't turbos more fun especially when they are boosted way up and you don't know what is gonna happen. Superchargers are more linear and predictably, and in this way boring in a way. WIth a high boost turbo you might get your wheels spinning in 4th gear, making the situation really dangerous but very fun :D
Quetzalcoalt haha, living life on the edge
Yeah but its really annoying when you're on the track because when you go around a Corner and suddenly the boost Kicks in can lead you to snap oversteering
@Amir that's why i was talking about fun, not track.
@Beyla well i'm dreaming for a supra at around 500hp single turbo, but until i get the money they are either gonna be gone or everything will be electric and with the new rules in my country, i would better get a real horse.
Quetzalcoalt that same issue can happen driving aggressively on the road
Nothing beat the reliability and sound of a good old Whipple Super Charger.
Really good, underappreciated video
Even a car normie like me can understand it easily
It's extremely satisfying when the turbo's boost starts to kick in...
My brother's friend owns a Mazdaapeed 5 and it has a turbo and supercharger and it RUNS LIKE HELL
For anyone who's late to the video... Twin screws spin exactly the same direction as roots blowers... Look at which rotor the drive pulley on the supercharger is attached to on both... The engine only spins one way people
I've got a Twincharged golf 6 dsg. Dam I love the instant power.
Personal preference.
Love how it shows the hellcat when it comes to supers
Has anyone thought of a form of twin charging that wraps everything up in a single package? What I mean is have a hybrid turbo/centrifugal supercharger system where the unit is belt driven with a clutch so that when the engine starts pushing the exhaust turbine hard enough, the clutch disengages from the belt drive. I see such a system as having the spool capability of a supercharger with the efficiency and ability to make more power at high revs like turbos do.
Supercharger FTW!
My cars Twincharged.. I WIN.

ThatGuyNamedScott. C you mean it has twin hairdryers
ThatGuyNamedScott. C 1.4 tsi twincharger is the less realiable engine in the last 20 years lol... How many km per liter of engine oil? :D
Twin charged engines: MOM DAD STOP FIGHTING
I like both. I got two dream cars are supercharged s2000 and a singles turbo R34,R33 or R32
Well said
Which is better also depends on the piping network in the engine bay. If you have to fit miles of of extra kit to link the exhaust and inlet then you’ll wait for turbo kick in longer than Windows Vista boot up.
I like turbos because of the potential for power throughout the rev range once you're into boost. Decreased drivability increased powerband. (I just prefer na)
Lars Murdoch Kalsta thats incredibly uneducated
gonna have to go with turbo. with companies like mazda and volvo reducing turbo lag, it is a pretty good solution to both efficiency and power standpoints.
There are 2 problems which scare me away from turbos. 1. Unreliable 2. Overheating is very common
Turbo all day!
"just charger...
*Dodge Charger* "
Lmao I was looking for a joke like this 😂
Good to see you dude, cheers!
Idk which to choose some I'm going with both
I'd take both just on sound alone
Supercharger ftw
Norr R Twincharged ftw change my mind
X Black1knife X the nightmare that is setting that up as well as the cost will change your mind.
im a big fan of turbos
but supercharger is better
X Black1knife X Plus the weight of the turbo, the supercharger and an electromagnetic clutch. And the sudden change between supercharger and turbo wont be as smooth as you imagine.
Ok we can probably all agree that both tother is great but turbo is better to me because it doesn’t raise the center of gravity and in a drag race it gives the opponent that split second of hope.
Ofc ill pick both
N/A all DAY
I drive a supercharged vehicle and I like the sound but it would be more efficient if it made the same power just by building the na motor to the same power
Really aggressive NA builds tend to have poor street manners due to camshaft choice. They are often soft down low and have to really be revved out to hit peak torque and HP numbers. Look at big displacement NA drag racing cars for example. At least on pushrod V8s you can get stock street manners down low and a forced induction kick up top if you go with a centrifugal supercharger or turbo.
Cool thing on turbo chargers:What sound is it QUIZiZIZIZ
Cool thing on Super chargers:the engine sound all the way
Be a Zenvo and get both. The sound it would make would be interesting.
Simplicity, reliability, predictability.
I'll take mine 037-style.
Supercharger sounds like a little girl that are crying but turbos sounds like a beast that ready for fight
0:27 "Used to bring in COLDER(!?) and more dense air."
Robin Boots yes colder air because the particles are closer together, thus making it more dense than hot air
Milky When air is compressed, the temperature rises. Certain types of fire starters rely on that principle.
And even if what you are saying were true, then why are intercoolers a thing?
To cool it down even more
compressed air is hotter than it would normally be. hence why almost all supercharged/turbo cars need intercoolers and such
intercooler.......................
I guess that the turbocharge is much better considering the fuel consumption and the effect on the engine in the long run , however a car with both turbocharge and supercharge sounds better to me 😁
Spool or whine? I get both in my Golf GT Twincharger and i love it 😏
Ah yes the old war between making your car sound like a pigeon vs making your car sound like it has asthma
Supercharger is my personal favorite
Centrifugal supercharger any day of the week!
I installed a supercharger on a 2.2L for the lols and in the highway i floored it. As i was driving the PSI exploded clean off ahaha.
Why not just put both in a v6 engine swapped mk1 mx5. Then everyone wins
I prefer the feel of a N/A engine, so supercharging fits my character better for how I drive... however, I love boost of all kinds. From belt driven, to exhaust driven, hell I even love chemical supercharging (nitrous oxide).
I love superchargers!!!!
Thats Flowey... (Flees)
Same
2:17 so Superchargers are just Fidget Spinner Spinners?
If you have a pair of rotors!
Can't unsee
You can say it on turbos as well. Check videos on ball-bearing turbos. The same thing
Turbo chargers tend to overheat more than superchargers
@9600GTMAN turbo wins with power tho and put a 2 turbos(small turbo and big turbo)in a car and youll see the magic, rather than the typical supercharger *sigh* Americans ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌
@@vipbeef2174 Yeah and then you'll have the big turbo choking the engine at low revs, and the small turbo choking the engine at high revs.
@9600GTMAN yes I can ubderstand your point
@@reinbeers5322 yep superchargers are best for track cars as they have more torque and turbos arw for dragraces because they are good for horsepower(top speed)
He’s right tho when together they knock out each other’s weaknesses
God when I can start nodding my truck it’s going to be such a good looking truck with the supercharger out of the roof
Can you do the same comparison for NA ICE engine too. Thank You
Roots superchargers do not compress air. The air compression happens outside of the superchargers casing in the intake mainifold. Basically Roots superchargers blow a specific and fixed volume of air into the engine with each rotation regardless of engine RMP. In general the amount of air coming in is greater than that being sucked in by the engine thus, creating positive pressure in the intake, and making boost. This is why Roots superchargers are called blowers.
Both have their spots, but I lean a bit more towards the turbo simply because its essentially free power. Turns exhaust, usually something that is useless, into more horses.
Also - turbos are rather fun to drive. The turbo lag is still definitely a con, but keeps it interesting.
Damn hard descision m8. How about intercoolinf air from a turbo and then slamming it through a centrifugal to compress it even further
Y’all forgot to mention G-Ladder supercharges, I own one and they are also very fun
I love my NA motors. My S85 motor is a beast from the E60 M5. 5.0 L V10 allllll day
Turbos are not for the faint of heart while superchargers are not the the people with no gas money
This video brought to you by DERP... Glad they don't do this format often
What we add super charger and 2 turbos on a 5l V10 and strap it to a AWD Ford GT
turbocharger. Cus i dont like the whining sound. Sometimes it covers the beautiful engine sounds
I'm not 100% certain but maybe you should review some of the points on the *Turbocharger:
As I understood it, turbos are capable of making an engine more EFFECTIVE at burning fuel, ergo a smaller engine can produce more power, but not more EFFICIENT.
you dowsize the engine to benefit from the lower displacement and save fuel, you turbo it to put you back on the power.
Or am I missing something? my knowledge is admitedely some years behind.
Turbos are more efficient solely because they run off wasted energy- exhaust gas. Super chargers have parasitic power loss.
They both do the same thing tho, denser air=more fuel=more power regardless of engine size.
The new 2019 ZR1 Corvette takes 110hp just to run the super charger at the top end(Jay Lenos Garage).
J T oh comparatevely more efficient... I forgot it was a VS. That's right, even tho you'll invariably have some restriction on the exhaust it won't be nearly as parasitic as having a supercharger running off a pulley.
legendario13 Exactly. Each has its own pros & cons. Personally I prefer turbo, the sounds & feel but as far as installing yourself, super charger definitely the easier option.
You are right. Plus turbos have a more complex overall system to vari the amount of air to and out of the engine. Basicaly the turbo is identical to an Air conditioning cycle. But in here you use more pressure (so you also have more control on boosting in general as i see it)
I like supercharger because it gives you instant power without lag
TURBO CHARGER
Guess I gotta get both now😂
turbocharger. its smaller and lighter weight, along with increased efficiency. makes them good options for fun lightweight cars with small fuel tanks. plus modern developments minimize if not eliminate turbo lag in many cars.
Variable nozzle turbocharger can reduce lag look it up, superchargers don't make full boost down low. Comprex wave supercharger are also interesting to check out but were fitted to bugger all cars.
you forgot to mention that turbos get really hot which can be considered a negative :x
9.4 Liter V12 + quad turbo + twin screw super
Just use both!
Natural Aspiration for the win
Hellcat Superchargers sound so damn good
Turbo takes up a lot less space. Super by its definition is bulky. Dont know how toyota squeezed super in their yaris (?) .
Turbos are getting better with their LAG. I drive one twin scroll turbo and the lag is very small, but I have to say that power comes in stages.
The lag varies with your engine size, and your built in computer and how its tuned. You can change some settings (what they do in apr and abt). Superchargers are giving power from the minute the car is turned on. Even on idle mode. Turbo - is about squeezing the gas pedal thus boosting more, so you are not always boosting with a turbo.
Am I the only guy who'd prefer naturally aspirated because it's actually the engine making the power?
I now own a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SSEI Supercharger that has repeatedly beaten Mustangs and turbo charged cars at stop light races.
*sigh* The only con is the speeding tickets I've been getting. 😢
Roots & Twin screw superchargers both fall under the same category of positive displacement superchargers
Centrifugal Supercharger combined with a Turbocharger.....and....here.......we......GO
Cover felt something when i see first time
What about positive displacement superchargers?
Twin charged for the speed and the noise
would be cool to have a turbo that used a strong electric motor to make boost in the usualy laggy phase and kinda pre spool it before the engine took over
