    Turbochargers do not increase mpg on their own. A Turbocharger allows the car to burn more fuel. By Turbocharging an Engine, you're in fact, making it consume more fuel. However a Turbocharger allows a small engine to make the same amount of power as a bigger engine thus saving on weight. This is what is making turbochargers such a viable option for small efficient cars.

    • @MrEggyman99
      @MrEggyman99 6 лет назад +9

      Hell yeh, that's why my Ford 1.0 Ecoboost is putting out 140bhp at 41mpg average as opposed to the rated 70mpg all other 99bhp 1.0 Ecoboost engines are rated at. (yes I know there is a factory standard re-map)

      Everytime I see a crossover powered by a turbo 1.6L I think of this.

    • @neutronalchemist3241
      @neutronalchemist3241 6 лет назад +11

      It's not only saving weight. A smaller engine consumes less when less power is required (less reciprocating masses, less power absorbed by the services, less friction, more efficient combustion chambers...). When low power is required the turbo almost doesn't absorb power, so the car has the higher efficiency of a small engine. When power is required, the turbo is there for that.

    • @prushimush
      @prushimush 6 лет назад +6

      "It takes power to make power" bears repeating when it comes to anything, including forced induction. In this case the turbo is spooled by waste heat power from hot exhaust gasses vs. crank snout belt drive on a supercharger. This is why turbos have taken over the market in recent years, they are efficient and play nice with Euro displacement taxes and US CAFE standards alike. I still prefer superchargers from a hobbyist standpoint, where it's all "smiles per gallon"; as they are extremely simple to install and maintain.

    • @bleughbloop8569
      @bleughbloop8569 5 лет назад +9

      Yes and no...Turbochargers take heat energy (and kinetic energy) that was going to be wasted and recycles it back into the engine for another go at turning into mechanical energy. It does increase efficiency on its own. What you said about smaller engines is valid too.
      It bears mentioning that a petrol engine is a kind of heat engine. You put heat in, you get heat and mechanical energy out. There is a thermodynamic limit to the amount of heat you can turn into mechanical energy that is determined by the temperature the engine is run at and the ambient temperature you're rejecting the waste heat to. That is to say: a perfectly efficient engine can never change all of the heat energy into mechanical.

      488rwh is not much from a 5L engine. 488rwkw (650rwhp) is pretty common for a unopened 4L Turbo Barra. Turbo is much more efficient.

    • @JimmyBreedlove
      @JimmyBreedlove 6 лет назад

      Nor Dic Nobody said anything about a 5.0L? He has the 14 year old SVT Termi Cobra with the old 4.6L, a car that makes 270whp N/A. A supercharged 5.0L from the factory makes around 670-680whp lol. btw look at his name it couldn’t make you anymore oblivious... “ForPointSix 4.6”

    • @nordic5490
      @nordic5490 6 лет назад +1

      Hey Jimmy, 4.6L vs 5L is spitting hairs. Point is, turbo charing is a lot more efficient, as 25% of your engines power is used just to drive the supercharger. Also, turbos are set up to make way too much boost, and this is then tamed by the wastegate to keep the boost down. The net effect of this is massive mid range torque can be achieved without blowing your engine, and he torque curve can be precisely controlled electronically. This torque control cannot be achieved with belt driven supercharging, hence lower overall torque setups to protect a supercharged engine.
      Superchargers do have their place though, when precise and instant throttle control is needed, eg in rock hopping, or technical hill climbing.

    I can't pick a side because I like both. Even tho turbo is more practical because it uses exhaust gases, supercharger delivers power nicely and instantly. Both have pros and cons but they are both, at the end of the day, good. It's just preference and opinion

    both! More clutch'd supercharger options are needed (98 Benz 2.3 Kompressor Eaton M62 is one) which can essentially be turned-off, like when turbo takes over or for cruising around at partial throttle. An electric TB can be used as a switched diverter valve for vacuum side.

    Aren't turbos more fun especially when they are boosted way up and you don't know what is gonna happen. Superchargers are more linear and predictably, and in this way boring in a way. Has anyone thought of a form of twin charging that wraps everything up in a single package? What I mean is have a hybrid turbo/centrifugal supercharger system where the unit is belt driven with a clutch so that when the engine starts pushing the exhaust turbine hard enough, the clutch disengages from the belt drive. I see such a system as having the spool capability of a supercharger with the efficiency and ability to make more power at high revs like turbos do.

    • @prushimush
      @prushimush 6 лет назад

      Really aggressive NA builds tend to have poor street manners due to camshaft choice. They are often soft down low and have to really be revved out to hit peak torque and HP numbers. Look at big displacement NA drag racing cars for example. At least on pushrod V8s you can get stock street manners down low and a forced induction kick up top if you go with a centrifugal supercharger or turbo.

  • @nooranik21

    Roots superchargers do not compress air. The air compression happens outside of the superchargers casing in the intake mainifold. Basically Roots superchargers blow a specific and fixed volume of air into the engine with each rotation regardless of engine RMP. In general the amount of air coming in is greater than that being sucked in by the engine thus, creating positive pressure in the intake, and making boost. This is why Roots superchargers are called blowers.

  • @NotTheCIA1961

    Both have their spots, but I lean a bit more towards the turbo simply because its essentially free power. Turns exhaust, usually something that is useless, into more horses.

    I'm not 100% certain but maybe you should review some of the points on the *Turbocharger:
    As I understood it, turbos are capable of making an engine more EFFECTIVE at burning fuel, ergo a smaller engine can produce more power, but not more EFFICIENT.
    you dowsize the engine to benefit from the lower displacement and save fuel, you turbo it to put you back on the power.
    Or am I missing something? my knowledge is admitedely some years behind.

    • @JT-kr3dg
      @JT-kr3dg 6 лет назад +2

      Turbos are more efficient solely because they run off wasted energy- exhaust gas. Super chargers have parasitic power loss.
      They both do the same thing tho, denser air=more fuel=more power regardless of engine size.
      The new 2019 ZR1 Corvette takes 110hp just to run the super charger at the top end(Jay Lenos Garage).

    • @legendario13
      @legendario13 6 лет назад

      J T oh comparatevely more efficient... I forgot it was a VS. That's right, even tho you'll invariably have some restriction on the exhaust it won't be nearly as parasitic as having a supercharger running off a pulley.

    • @JT-kr3dg
      @JT-kr3dg 6 лет назад

      legendario13 Exactly. Each has its own pros & cons. Personally I prefer turbo, the sounds & feel but as far as installing yourself, super charger definitely the easier option.

    • @eranliber5993
      @eranliber5993 5 лет назад

      You are right. Plus turbos have a more complex overall system to vari the amount of air to and out of the engine. Basicaly the turbo is identical to an Air conditioning cycle. But in here you use more pressure (so you also have more control on boosting in general as i see it)

    Turbo takes up a lot less space. Super by its definition is bulky. Dont know how toyota squeezed super in their yaris (?) .
    Turbos are getting better with their LAG. I drive one twin scroll turbo and the lag is very small, but I have to say that power comes in stages.

    • @eranliber5993
      @eranliber5993 5 лет назад

      The lag varies with your engine size, and your built in computer and how its tuned. You can change some settings (what they do in apr and abt). Superchargers are giving power from the minute the car is turned on. Even on idle mode. Turbo - is about squeezing the gas pedal thus boosting more, so you are not always boosting with a turbo.
