Quite the morale booster I woke up today feeling awful and put this song on, now I'm drinking a lovely cup of tea and feeling like I can conquer the world.
This is how I always imagined the brits in war "we're gonna hang out the washing on the siegfried line IF it's still there", they knew they were going to fight back the germans and they made fun of it :P.
That's probably the point. I would imagine if someone goes off to war, they wouldn't want to sing or hear dirges about the horrors they experience every day. I imagine they would instead want to sing upbeat songs to take their mind off the hardships they are facing.
They didn't have the media then trying to dramatise it and make money from it then. Think of Russia today but with no free media coverage and just the BBC, equivalent, telling people to stay calm and carry on. Think of the this is fine, fire meme, when they tried to normalise the shit show back then. Luckily, the British then had stones for this. We don't see many British stones like this these days from the new recruits....
Mother-dear, I'm writing you from somewhere in France, Hoping this finds you well! Sergeant says I'm doing fine - a soldier and a half! Here's a song that we'd all sing; It will make you laugh! (x2:) We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line, Have you any dirty washing, Mother-dear? We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line, Cause the washing day is here. Whether the weather may be wet or fine, We'll just rub along without a care. We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line - If the Siegfried Line's still there! Everybody's mucking in and doing their job, Wearing a great big smile. Everybody's got to keep their spirit up today. If you want to keep in swing, Here's the song to sing. We're going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line, Have you any dirty washing, Mother-dear? We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line, Why? Cause the washing day is here! Now, whether the weather may be wet or fine, Well, we'll just rub along without a care. We're going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line - Why, if the Siegfried Line's still there!
