    Dave is the magnet for 5 strings lately. I actually enjoy 5-string for some stuff.

    First bass was a 4 string, quickly went to 5. Played 5 for about 25 years and never touched a 4 again. Just bought a 4 string jazz and my god it’s a different animal. it’s like learning a new instrument again, I’m constantly missing strings when I’m playing. It’s amazing how accustomed you get to things.

    Ahh ok. Wasn’t sure. You sound a little like Chicago. Like watching you make guitars great. Here in Oregon we only have very few choices for custom work. Not too many good craftsmen in the area but there is one shop in Portland that does it right. They get all my business.

      As long as it's not being tuned to standard, there likely isn't that much more tension on the neck than normal.

  • @greg4673
    @greg4673 5 лет назад

    We'd probably set it up with 130-45's depending on if ur gonna slap it or not. Even then a lot can be done with the action/relief situation. Remember to have a shop [or you] check the straightness and level fret situation and general setup specs
    before going too nutty.

      Damn. I called stoner metal or Djent; had all the calling cards:
      1. Beginner bassist (I inferred from Dave's narration)
      2. 5 string (not always a bad thing), but see above.
      3. 5th string is >.150"
      4. Alternate tuning, as others have noted.

    Does he tune that to beadg? Why such heavy strings? Should tuning a lot lower with a .175 cripes

    • @barlitone
      @barlitone 5 лет назад +1

      I doubt it. My 5 string has a .150 B string because my band detunes like crazy; it spends most of its time in A standard (A D G C F, low to high), and some of its time in Drop G. This bass probably spends a lot of time even lower.

    • @Clean97gti
      @Clean97gti 5 лет назад

      I set up an old Ibanez with a set of Rotosound Drop Zone+ strings with that low .175 string when I was playing in a local metal band. That bass was tuned down to F# with a 432hz reference pitch. It needed that gauge to have any sort of tension on a 34" scale.
      Despite me telling the singer that such a low note was basically pointless, he insisted I keep using it so he could "feel" it when we were on stage. I finally told him that my rig wasn't producing any of those fundamental lows at anything above speaking volume, because the 410 cab I was using, simply couldn't do it. So that thump he was feeling wasn't the F#. He insisted that even if we couldn't hear it, it was still producing the waves. I even checked the specs on the speakers in that cab and nope...it dropped off very quickly below that low B. Almost no volume at the 22-23hz range that F# lived in. Dude just couldn't understand it. Glad I'm not in that shitshow anymore.

    • @Clean97gti
      @Clean97gti 5 лет назад

      @Logan Searle I ignored it and tried to play the songs even though I knew it was bullshit. It was other things that made me ditch them. The band was just getting started, so every dime we made went into merch and the like. But when it came time to actually put the merch out, there was none because the singer was using the money for his own shit instead of the band. When we asked him about it, he said he had to take a return on his investment. Insisted it wasn't stealing because it was his band.

      Custom ordered thru "Circle K" or Kallium strings, IIRC. They can go above 0.200"

    • @Clean97gti
      @Clean97gti 5 лет назад

      Kalium strings are awesome. You can get almost any gauge you want. You can get sets specifically for drop tuning, balanced tension, traditional tension, piccolo basses, nickel or stainless or both in one set.
