  • COLIN BAKER played the SIXTH DOCTOR on TV screens from 1984 to 1986, refusing to return to shoot a regeneration or any follow up story in 1987... but what if...
What if he DID stay? How would the Sixth Doctor fit in to these bright and breezy season? Would the stories have to change their style and tone to accommodate him? Join me as we discuss the possibilities of Colin Baker retaining the keys to the TARDIS, during SEASON 24!

Colin remains my favorite incarnation of Dr Who. I can totally see almost all of Season 24 working for him now you mention it, and it’s not as though he wasn’t given one or two poor scripts in earlier seasons that he still made work (Timelash for instance). If I had just one wish to change Colin’s era I would give him the originally planned Season 23 in 1985 back, and keep Trial of a Timelord as is. I have so enjoyed the Big Finish audio of those stories, and I think they would have been great on TV. If I had two wishes then I’d give him Season 24 too 😊

Colin definitely deserved another season ( and way better treatment by the BBC and fandom) but, I'd feel bad if giving him that had cost us Sylvester.
    My what if list:
Tom Baker stayed for another season, with Adrian, Tegan and Nysa as his Tardis crew
Roger Delgado lived longer and we got a story with his Master meeting the 4th Doctor
Instead of just the cartoon, Richard E Grant got to be a proper, live action Doctor
Jodi Whitaker regenerated into another actress, and we got a second lady Doctor

Colin’s legacy may have been better served by not being in Season 24. The problem is that Season 24 is already viewed as the weakest in the classic series by many (including me)… largely due to poor writing and campy production. I fear Colin would have taken much of the blame, even if it wasn’t his fault… because it was easy to blame the guy in the brightly-colored coat. I fear it could have killed the series at that point. While Sylvester was getting his footing for much of the season, making it his weakest season overall, viewers and BBC management seemed more forgiving of him than they were of Colin. At the time, the 16-year old me placed a lot of the blame for the show’s decline on Colin’s portrayal of the Doctor. I have since realized that belief was mistaken, but I do think he dodged a bullet by missing out on the show’s worst season.

John Nathan Turner was on the staff at the BBC. So they were stuck with him. He wasn't well liked and was seen as a nuisance because his big dream was to bring back "Compact", a dire 60s soap set in the office of a women's fashion/lifestyle magazine. He dreamt of getting a different celebrity guest each week and transferred that ambition onto Dr Who. Resulting in such clever casting choices as turning down *Peter Cushing* in favour of _Leonard Sachs_ the master of ceremonies on "The Good Old Days". The idea being that Sachs was more "Showbiz".
The BBC kept him on Dr Who as they hoped he'd get fed up and quit. They'd also got fed up of Dr Who despite the money it brought in to BBC Enterprises.

How Dragonfire could be reworked into a regeneration episode? Force him to sacrifice himself to save someone from Cain (and have that specifically lead to Cain being trapped with the sunlight) is how I'd go for it. _That_ Doctor sacrificing himself for someone - Not Ace, not Mel, not Glitz, someone he doesn't know - seems the ideal lead in to his regeneration to me.
A What If of this nature that might be fun - What If JNT listened to the advice Sydney Newman gave for rejuvinating the show. S24 with Patrick Troughton, S25-26 with a woman in the part (I'm going to go with Joanna Lumley as our hypothetical Doctor for this question because quite honestly she'd have made a fantastic Doctor)
Oh that's another good What If for the production - What if the TVM had have lead to a full season staring Paul McGann?
Also might be interesting, though I know Big Finish have adapted all of them for audio - What If the original S23 had been made instead of Trial. The one that was going to open with a Celestial Toymaker story set in Blackpool.

The Sixth Doctor sacrificing himself for someone he doesn't know would've been such a powerful ending to his character, especially given how he first started with his post-regenerative mania leading to him attack Peri, having him save a random person would've been a really powerful gut check and would've given Colin - who was incredible as the Doctor when he was given stuff he could really get his teeth into - the send-off that he deserved.

If they were going to do a regeneration they would use that Star Child as a thing. Seeing the story seemed to focus on her a bit at points but nothing came from it. - a Black and White Guardian type thing - the Mother being the Black element. Of course the story would have too be re structured to fit it all in lol.

I do say that seasons 24 and 25 could have worked with Colin Baker still the Doctor, and IMO Colin when he appeared in 70s science fiction series Blakes Seven as a villain Bayban in episode City at the Edge of the World he was awesome in B7 and I wish in billions Colin could have been cast as Blake in B7 I can easily envisage Colin as Blake and working alongside Paul Darrow, michael Keating, Jan Chappell and also the rest of the regular B7 cast such as Jacqueline Pearce the arch-enemy Servalan . Jacqueline herself appeared in classic Dr Who in the 2 Drs and she as the villain Chessene was awesome.

It's a shame we didn't have the 6th Doctor for longer but Season 24 was sort of put together in a rush without much of the input of Andrew Cartmel as script editor. As such alot of the stories buy into Sylvester McCoy's physical comedy background so were therefore written (as sorts) with him in mind rather than Colin Baker. Season's 25 and 26 were darker due to Cartmel having established his influence on the direction of the show by then. The only story from Season 24 that would have fitted the 6th Doctor without much of a rewrite would have been 'Time And The Rani' given that Pip and Jane Baker wrote alot of it before knowing who the 7th Doctor would be and what his characterisitics were so they wrote it as if they writing another 6th Doctor story. It's still an interesting concept though in what Season 24 could have turned out with the 6th Doctor although I feel it would have been alot different (for better or worse) than what we got. Would have been interesting to see how Doctor Who would have carried on into the 70's if Troughton had done another season as that would have looked very different also how the 5th Doctor would have handled Season 22. Good video nonetheless.

I think the best outcome would have been the season opens with Paradise Towers, the Delta, then Time and the Rani (and sixth dies at the end as originally scripted) and then dragon fire. Colin gets 11 out of 14 eps and the whole cast changes in the last 2 stories.

EVERYTHING about the downturn in viewers for season 23 was due to the BBC and Titwanker Grade interference. THEY had the nerve to blame JNT and others for Doctor Who being 'cheap' omitting the simple fact Grade and the BBC were SOLELY responsible for the show's budget.
They had the FINAL say on everything. Including the budget. And not only Doctor Who.
As for the 'decline' in season 22 ratings? Not true. They were actually an increase on season 21.
In fact, the overall quality of the show, during season 21 and 22, was a improvement on season 20 in both scripts and presentation.
Twin Dilemma? As with "Time Flight" or "The King's Demons" they should've used that money for another story or held it over for the first story of the next season.
Colin Baker in season 24? I think his portrayal would've been better then before but the production and scripts would've hampered any good IMHO.

I think that, the further you get into Season 24, the less Colin works in it. For me, the stories suit Sylvester better and better. I would definitely want the last two stories of the season to not be what they were if it was still the 6th Doctor.
I do agree with you - Paradise Towers would still suit Colin's Doctor. Provided its tone is kept darker than how it actually came out with Sylvester.
Ideally, though, I would have preferred an entirely different set of stories if it had still been Colin. I do think Sylvester ends up giving us a decent first season (fans tend to give Season 24 more flack than it deserves). Because of this, I can really only see Sykvester in those stories. So I'd rather see Colin get an entirely different season. But if I had to compromise - then give Colin Sly's first two stories and give him two totally new ones for the second half of the season.

It also had the best Doctor/Peri relationship version where they were in more of a "chums working together" relationship like the Fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane. Either way, I'd have changed all the stories in S24, because it was (sadly) appalling.

Of later McCoy stories, The Happiness Patrol and Greatest Show would have been interesting, and for eras past - say for instance, if Nightmare of Eden hadn't been made at the time and then scripted in a late Season 21/Season 22 style (and redesigned the Mandrells), Colin would have shone I think - whilst his emphasis and delivery would be different to Tom, seeing Colin taking down Tryst could have been a 6th Doctor highlight. How about the actual season 24 that they had planned for Colin Baker, not just rehashing what was 24. I could see if Colin got his normal season that this would be season 25 but I could see them after Paradise Towers regenerating and right out of the gate the first McCoy adventure probably would be Delta and the Bannerman and therefore by Dragonfire he'd be in prime form. Now that would be a great send-off for the 6th that in Paradise Towers in the last moment the battle cost him his life. For the future, how about either a season 6B with the second doctor or the eighth doctor and how you'd go through those adventures when it came to putting it on television. Say for a 4-year run, like it was eluded to in the movie?

I would have done it this way: Open the season with Delta, a good lighthearted start to the season. Then follow it with paradise towers, colin would have thrived on that episode outraging at the rules and regs despite the towers obvious decay and inequality. Then i would have Time and the Rani. The story would essentially be the same. The doctor still gets amnesia from being forced down by the Rani and drugged. The difference would be that instead of beyus sacrificing his life, it would be the doctor and triggering his regeneration. Then Dragonfire would be a post Regeneration story of the Doctor still recovering from trauma and trying to find himself, so engages in this adventure trying to do just that. It would end the same, mel leaves and ace joins. But the difference would be that the doctor at the end has fully healed and realised what sort of person this regeneration was, leading up to Remembrance. The 7th doctor would never have had the transitional season and would have become the chessmaster almost straight away and tge sixth would have got his ending, albeit in the third story.

i liked it as with it being on midweek I wouldn’t miss it if I went to the football with my dad and also it delayed me starting my homework!
I remember to this day being blown away by the opening effects shot for The Mysterious Planet and thinking “surely this can’t be the BBC”. They were producing some good effects laden TV at the time such as The Tripods.

5:40 - Paradise Towers was apparently a holdover. I forget where I read it (DVD text commentary?) that the line "your clothes are ice hot" was written for Colin's jacket.

You mentioned Diemensions being 30 yrs old, not forgetting The Three Doctors 50th, The Five Doctors 40th The Day of The Doctor 10th. Any way you mentioned Colin's doctor doing Sylvesters Doctors' stories, what if they went back to the original s23 stories since they were scrap for Trail? OK, now most or all these have been made now, thanks to Big Finsh plus what if Colin didn't leave the show I wonder would the 7th Doctor was later cast and we did not have any voyages with no gap years from 89 to 96 to 2005???

You can only blame the BBC for wanting to cancel DW (instead of JNT, Baker and McCoy) because they didn’t see the future of low-budget science fiction. The 2009 resurgence was the greatest thing that could have happened as the BBC mindset realized they simply couldn’t get by importing US series like Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999; those series were simply outside their budget as well.

      Space 1999 isn't American, either.

This is really interesting and I love your take on it, but I think if Colin Baker had've stayed on it would've been a completely different season. For starters, the first serial would most likely have been a proper meeting story for Mel. On the whole, it would've been a more light-hearted season on par with what we actually got because that was Michael Grade's other demand (besides sacking Baker): that the show have more humour. Colin really got done dirty by the BBC because he's a really great actor and he had some really great moments, especially when he was attacking his own people for their moral stance (or lack thereof) in The Trial of a Time Lord.

I hate how they couldn’t even hide Slyvester’s hair under THAT twig.
Time and the Rani was written as Colin’s regeneration story. He would have been in Beyus’ place at the end during the explosion, triggering regeneration.

That was interesting and I think I could see Dragonfire as a Regeneration story and I would have the Doctor get infected with something and If I was the writer for Dragonfire, I would find that challenging.

There was a bunch of stories that was not used. If you look at the trial Of a time Lord they talk about that. There was a story about the autons and the ambassador and ramaybe. They would've worked at season that they didn't use into this one and by the end of it he would regenerate

First: NO to the blue outfit. The multi colored jacket IS the Sixth Doctor and without it, it doesn't work as HIM. Sorry, that's just how it has cemented itself.
