The reason the engines were so smoky at 0:56 and 8:18 is because you need a lot of fuel/power to spool up the engine to takeoff thrust. Also those engines are getting quite old now.

Are they letting people back to the top of the parking structure? I used to be able to go up there without any issues (paying for parking of course) a few years ago but the last 2 times I tried to go the staff gave me a hard time 😔
I didn't run into any problems the day I spent on the specific garage I went to...but I could have just been lucky too. I've certainly heard plenty of cases where people ran into issues trying to spot from the garages there

Odd how united planes always blow black smoke on spool up and take off? No others airlines do this at SAN DIEGO . I see it on there 757's and 777's.
