Couldn't expressed this better myself. I first heard jazz at the age of 6 from V-discs (and a cupboard full of food) American soldiers gave my family passing through our town in India in 1943. There are so many songs which I listen to so many times, so many versions, by so many artists - never get enough. Ellington, Armstrong, Basie, Chet, Mulligan, Peterson, Brubeck, Garner, Ella, Sarah and so many others, are always with me - true eternal personal friends. Couldn't live without them.
This is a timeless melody, and only Mintzer can so beautifully arrange the subtle nuances in harmonies that rediscover and accentuate its power. From Elling's spot on, in tune, a capella intro, to the extended textures of a superb orchestration, flawlessly performed by NY's finest, with a recording that perfectly captures it, this is the best evidence why jazz continues to deserve our support as an indigenous American art form. I prefer this vocal version - and Elling can wear whatever he wants, as long as it makes him sing so well.
Bob Mintzer AND Kurt Elling 2gether on stage...WOW! I love the Yellowjackets, I love Big Band Music and I love Kurt Ellings voice and singing style! Oh, and the song is not too shabby :)
Incredible and cosmic version of the song, amazing musicians, Bob Mintzer, your big band arrangement is fantastic as always, harmony that makes you fly away to the galaxy!
I love this song when Kurt does it. HambaTT is spot on for the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival rendition. He inserts a poem or I think it's called a "coda" in the middle of the song that os breathtaking. On the Green Mill CD he does the same thing only different coda...but it inspires a profound longing, he's simply amazing.
Well - I also had to giggle when I saw Kurt's outer appearance - hairstyle and everything - in this video. I think he has improved a lot since then :) but it doesn't matter cause musically, this performance is such a joy, together with this great Big Band!
I find myself surrendering, resolving, softening, accommodating, understanding, for the glory of jazz, a vital part of art, can persuade, seduce, satisfy, as here in wonderful, professional, dedicated artistry. Great music.., from conception by Victor Young to the performers, arranger and players, singer, even the sated, bated, elated audience.
Yea this is kurt Elling, going buy the haircut I would say this was recorded in 2000 or earlier lol If you search for "Kurt Elling My Foolish Heart" on youtube, you will find a rendition he did at the Montreal jazz festival in 2007 that is simply amazing.
I seriously can't believe that there are people here who would call themselves music fans, and yet still make fun of Ellings (pretty damn tame) hairstyle. "OOOOOOH NOOO! That musician there has a non-typical fashion sense! Call the jazz police!"
Lol. So true. I think people are probably comparing dapper, put together Kurt Elling now to back then...I'm guessing (it's only a guess) that people wouldn't be discussing his look here if they didn't have something to compare it to.
rachybaby72 I love this tune and there are two other versions on RUclips I enjoy. Sacramento State Jazz Singers for voice harmony and Scott Hamilton for that 'post-"Baby it's Cold Outside" moment when she finally settles down beside you and the crackling fire and you enjoy a good red wine together in each other's arms. Oh, I'm such a romantic!

You can't go wrong with Michael Davis and Dave Taylor as bookends of the trombone section. That's a recipe for absolute bliss!

Hey , man , your talking my language
John Riley - drums; Rufus Reid - bass, Phil Markowitz - piano - decent rhythm section I’d say ...

Is he...Kurt Elling as a young man?
Nice arrangement.

Agree. These peolple dont know squat about music.
Is it Roger Rosenberg on clarinet and baritone sax?
This song is fantastic as a slow ballad!... The same can't be said for Elling's unfortunate hairstyle, though. Oh well. The man's got a set of pipes.
please anyone know the name of this bass ??? thanks...wonderful arrangement and implementation
The bass player is Rufus Reid.
song:Victor Young (liryc: Ned Washington) Bob M.:n*(*******...)

There is a version of this song, same wonderful arrangement, but with Michael Franks singing, which I consider better..
Really?? I must go find it. I love Michael Franks.
rachybaby72 Found it and love it! Thanks for the heads up. I can't stop playing the Michael Franks version now.
