  • Thursday April 17th 2008, Opera House, Sydney, Australia
Easy Living with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Described by New York Times as 'the standout male jazz vocalist of our times', Kurt Elling's smooth four-octave baritone voice is matched only by his emotional range: from quietly crooned love songs to virtuosic vocal displayed. For multi-award winner and 2008 Grammy Award nominee, Elling, it's about communication. He says 'I want people to be surprised, to be moved, to laugh, to remember something important they may have forgotten, I want them to have what they need.'

You can spend your whole life working towards an image of your projected self, and find that there are others that you would rather be. I am taken aback, awestruck, and completely in love with Kurt's voice. And when i think of singing, i think of singing like him. The ease, the room for the unexpected; years from now, he will be the one people look back and rediscover as a shining light for this age.

Lawrence is amazing. The university I was studying at had Kurt's group out for a concert a few years ago. Of course they were amazing. Kinda weird, but Lawrence wore gloves to keep his hands warm before playing and asked if the piano could be retuned between two night performances. I know there will be some haters. Just saying.

This guy basically has no voice, but what little he has he miraculously holds the audiences attention. Somehow he has gained and maintained popular appeal! I can't knock that, although that orchestration for " Easy Living" is way overly done and dramatic. Way too much, perhaps to balance out the fact he could barely sing a note. I guess as long as he has an audience, he will continue singing those same 5 notes that sang throughout that song! Can't knock his hustle, though!
