After completing the floor job in my home, my office is being redone and I plan to keep all my radios in a cabinet and only bring out the ones I am using at the time. Nothing will be permanent and I'll be able to move things around as my interests change. Radio gear stuck in one place tends to attract more dust than use...
Thanks for some nice pointers.. My shack is about to grow arms and legs ,into a shack/ Tech Lab. As I enjoy bringing vintage radios back to life.. With limited space its going to be a compromise for sure..And no doubt a lot of money !!
Looks great! Good job! In my experience I have found that I like my main HF rig on the lower shelf. Reason number one is my arm gets tired holding it up in the air while tediously turning the VFO scanning up and down the band for hours. Secondly, although the radio is eye level and easy to see on the top shelf, I find the radios speaker sounds muffled above ear level. It seems clearer below ear level on the bottom shelf. But as you pointed out, each person has different needs and opinions so, if it works out for ones self then it's perfect!
Very clean. A added touch would be to separate the head from your 2730 and mount it on the shelf face. Mine didn't come with the kit but had the cable so I just used Velcro.
Nice setup. I too am always changing my station, and planning some changes again. Been a Ham for a bit over 25 years now and still haven't needed an Amp. It's mostly in the "Antenna System". I got an 811H when my dad became a SK, but never used it. Traded it for a Kenwood TS-930. Keep the Videos coming, enjoy what others are doing, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.
Hello Josh & Greetings from across the briney from County Clare, Ireland. My comment is a bit late 😎. congratulations on your redesigned shack. I'm in the process of doing the same here. I will upload some new pics soon on QRZ. I have the Ameritron AL-811HXCE which I have modified thanks to W8JI. New comer or old fart (me) the AL-811 is a great amp. Simple to modify and repair, if necessary. I have fitted 4 x 572B's and find them to be great valves (tubes) which work great especially on CW which gives me around 800W. 73 Josh, always enjoy your videos. EI6DP
Good job, Looks good! Recently went to remodel some of my shack, got the new racks in place, didn't like it as much, put everything right back like it was originally lol. Oh well, had to try :)
I might be a little late but for anyone out there doing projects I wanted to suggest using those metal shelves like the one back there with the little zigzags on the edges. I got a few of those in different sizes and jigsawed some pine wood to fit on each level to make a solid surface and then as a touch I stained them making a pretty pleasing shine of metal and natural lumber, -all pretty cheap too (looks cool'n retro with metal knobs and space geek stuff). Those metal shelves are prefect for stacking and compartmentalizing electronic equipment on and are thin enough to allow for airflow if you have anything hot back there. They also come in a flat black if stainless isnt your thing. Get a few arranged and you'll have an aesthetically cohesive match flowing through the whole room; if you ever have to unplug everything and move'm or adjust the levels they arent too much of a hassle. The little edges with the zigzag shapes are good for hangin stuff like keys and ballcaps on too LoL. Right now I mostly use mine for my regular computer and old retro stereo/photo and astronomy gear. HAM radio's the next endevour though! You could probably use the one they have designed for hanging clothes on and re-purpose it into a really cool hybrid of a desk and then stack all the gear off to the left of right on the shelves. They can be found at Lowes or Home Depot. I think its the COOLEST looking desk no one is selling. Boy I cant wait to get into this! They also have attachable wheels so you can roll them around. It also makes the shack look really clean and flush.
Great job on the new setup Josh. I recently built a long work bench for my shack for projects, and operating (I want to be able to operate while standing) I just need to find a comfortable stool. Thanks for sharing your setup, 73!
Now that's a good looking shack! Hope it works better for your Friday night live action too keeping everything within arms reach and within the shot! One nit ... Air? Seriously? I learned long ago that using air in the shop only puts crap somewhere else where it is harder to cleanup. Now you have to vacuum any way. Kudos on the great work, 73s David (Orlando)
Just an advice for a good setup 2 homebase radio connected to swr link to an omni type G7 hustler antenna as reciever with a heliax solid, with your transmit you can make or buy a 4 bay 13 element directional yagi with a rotator, i have mine connected to a booster amp 1k watts on my transmit, the hight of my mass is 200 feet i have a 100 amp regulated power supply for my booster thatsetup can pick up a portable radio 30 to 50 miles end of story. Stay on amaruer band.
Great work Josh. You may want to consider moving the 7300 on the lower shelf near the keyboard. Having it that high and tuning/adjusting filters, etc may get a bit fatiguing when raising your arm. At least is was for me when I had a similar setup. 73 AI6ZV
great shack i am ham in nw arkansas, sometimes i loose my whole desk, junk junk everywhere,my live mouse need a ham license he in there more than i am.73
I jus ordered my third antenna, I’m beginning jus licensed General and how do people organize their HAM Handhelds, antennas??? Do you use faraday bags?? I have a Boafeng, now want to get a Yaesu with a field battery charger ability … How do you organize your HAM handheld Anntennas??
Love the videos, keep up the good work. I go for my HAM Technician license on the 14th of December. I've been studying like crazy. In your opinion do you think I should take both the Tech and the general exam at the same time? How much more difficult is the general exam? I am pretty good with electronics like, robotics and stuff. I guess I could go look myself, but I want your opinion on it.
6:47 - "I will deck it with ... this stuff." It looks like a coated MDF board. Where did you find that? I might use some when I build my outdoor office.
Hi Josh, Wonderful that you are experimenting with your shack. I will point out however the flaw with your layout. You haven't "felt" it yet... But your 7300 (main rig) should NOT be up high like that! You will wear yourself out reaching up to make adjustments, tuning, using the touch screen, etc. Ergonomics is your friend, friend! I have my unit table level & use a mousepad with a gel wrist bump to reduce stress on wrist. For long bouts of use, I have a towel that I fold up to about 9 inches wide (and many layers thick) to rest my arm on. Don't laugh, it saves the elbow from having soreness & big red spot; while not leaving dents in the desk (ok kidding about that...). Your Amp should be on top to provide superior air flow & allow heat to rise away. I'd bet, if you reread the manual, it talks about maintaining an open space around the unit. You might want to check & recheck your power supply for heat too, which will rise into your Swr meter. Keeping your operating area clear of stuff, junk, tools, projects, etc. Is really useful. I have a totally separate table for that on the other side of my station. I still have issues keeping that area mess-free. Keep experimenting though, it's good for the brain! Kinda like a big, 3-D version of Tetris... oh crap! I think I just dated myself again. 73 - John - N7GHZ
All good points. I have a few ways to control the 7300 now. And based on my arm placement it seems to be right in reach. I also have a external vfo, ptt for it. The shelf next to the amp doesn’t block any of the vents or the blower. I used it last night monitoring the temps and seems never got warmer that it traditionally is. Pretty happy with it so far.
Great job! I would recommend more focus on ergonomics. The items you "touch" most need to be closest. For example, if you use the tune knob on the radio the most, it needs to be front and center... Not as important if you use mostly computer control, of course. I like to locate my power supplies under the desk, because they don't really require much interaction. Flip the switch once, and that's it... Boom mic with a foot switch frees up desk space and lets you keep both hands on the keyboard. Keep up the good work! 73 de K9ZF
I ended up using the remote VFO device on the left side of the keyboard. That keeps the 7610 closer to my eye line and my left hand can easily control the VFO. I think that is a better solution overall.
When you get a chance look at the hutch that I built for my check k2csx that desktop was 8 years ago and now making more changes for sdr 7610 9700 7300

Shack update looks good! I’m glad I’m not the only one stuck with having their shack in the garage as well
Used to have a big desk with many radios and scanners. No longer do HF but still do 2 meters and 440 in my vehicles. Big into APRS.
Very clean. A added touch would be to separate the head from your 2730 and mount it on the shelf face. Mine didn't come with the kit but had the cable so I just used Velcro.

Nice job well done from Gary in the UK 73.
Dig the setup! I just ordered a bunch of ferrites from Palomar recently too for my shack remodel. Good stuff! 73
Great build- thanks!

I did indeed vacuum up after 🤣
I rebuild the shack every couple of years. I think making modular shelving is helpful.
More Milwaukee tool usage!!! Most of mine are M12, but working on cars requires an M18 impact driver.

Geez mang. How much did all that set you back?
great vid. I like the modular stuff to experiment how to set up your gear!
Nice, been meaning to do the same.
You need a dedicated radio shack room. Not share it with your toolroom but i always enjoy interesting shelving setups.
Sounds good. I’m awaiting your down payment on a new house with extra rooms needed for a radio room. 👍

Did this today, With my very limited shack, but i will never be satisfied
Hey Josh. Could you do a blurb about the microphone setup you have for the 7300. Mic type , boom, shock mount etc. Thanks
If the ICOM SW is not running I use the 7300 desk mic. Otherwise I use the RS-BA1 SW to interface with my Blue microphone on my computer.

i realize I am kind of randomly asking but does anybody know of a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Milan Kylan Lately I have been using FlixZone. Just google for it :)
Josh, curious have you done this again more recently? I didnt see anything in your other videos but might of missed it
It’s very nice , I looking for videos on RUclips who show how to build home station shark , for me is more interest. Thanks 73, I hope to see more .
Kindly suggest some MOOC course for HAM Radio License based on using two old kits of HAM radio
I like the set up and thank you for the videos. I'm a newer ham and I use your videos quite a bit.... 73 KN6CWT

Nah, you can go many different directions.
I love your ham shack I can hardly wait to see you operate that amplifier thanks Kevin KD7KYB

GREAT JOB JOSH, FROM N3NDX,, I LOVE THE NEW SHACK...........GOD ALMIGHTY YEHOVAH BLESS YOU MY FRIEND..........11-26-2019.............
Computer next to some big power,,,,, may be an issue. Some bands will take control of my computer and trigger the signal link.
Computer is about three feet away from radio/amp etc.
Our hamshacks do tend to get cluttered don't they? Every couple of months i find myself cleaning and re-aranging things.

You know, you can get pegboard hangers for the radio and amp, and just hang 'em on the wall.(WEG)
None of the hangers I have seen seem strong enough.
This got me thinking. Always a bad thing...LOL

I think half the fun of Ham radio is redoing the shack.
Your biggest problem is not having room for your legs under the bench (there's a shelf underneath it)
Can't sell anything you have as being from a "smoke free" home. :) Incense... :)
Waste of space. Too bulky. You have a wall, why not use it for brackets for shelving? Put all the dangling tools somewhere else.
Dude, how do you have two commercials just a minute and a half into your video? Really?
RUclips puts them up. I don’t touch them.
