This entire album is up there with their best. It's haunting, emotional, focusing on the importance of communication, and as usual, with incredible and distinctive music.
This is my favorite Pink Floyd album, and this song is also my favorite Pink Floyd song. The end solo is definitely the highlight of the song for me, it's so uplifting and beautiful and dreamy. David Gilmour is a fantastic song writer and the definition itself of what a creative guitar player really is. Thank you for your review, I enjoyed it very much!
@@Norollo I guess any interpretation of a work of art is fair despite what the author might have intended, but we do in fact in this case have Polly (not only David's wife, but also co-writer of this song) confirming that the first verse if about Syd and the second is about Roger
I wrote an essay about this song in college (got an A+ :) ). My interpretation of it is about life overall. When you listen to the music itself, it takes you through a roller coaster of emotions of what you could experience in life itself. It can be upbeat, happy, and then you can end up in a darker place. Whether its for a minute or years, you eventually come out of the dark place. The music plays to this in the last third of the song, you can hear how the positive music starts injecting itself and you can feel and see the light is at the end of the tunnel. We all go through our highs and lows but the best part to me is when we get clarity, during the lows, we can figure out how to come out of that low and eventually get into a high again.
All I can say is, welcome to the Pink Floyd world. No one else can touch your soul like they can, leaving you happy and melancholy at the same time. Some amazing songs like Coming Back To Life, Lost for Words and High Hopes coming up.
@@BetterEveryDayRUclips Apologies for that. I only stumbled onto your site yesterday. Please still do a reaction on the live version of On the turning away. It will touch your soul, especially the words and guitar solo Kind regards
It is a gloomy voiced song and the lyrics tell about friends separated and choosing different paths. The solo however is one of the brightest upbeat leads I have heard by Pink Floyd. Love this one. Marooned is fantastic too.
Very true except for Marooned, Cluster One, Wearing the Inside Out, and Coming Back to Life but overall, an awesome album. It got me through some tough times.
So many great songs from this album still to come. “High Hopes” and for me what is one of Pink Floyd’s truly underestimated songs “Wearing the inside Out”.
It's me again. Thank you soooooo much for not pausing over David's solo. If his talent was painting, he'd have done the Sistine chapel. I wouldn't be surprised if Gos Himself enjoys David on guitar. While you were washed in golden light from sunrise over the meadows. I was a passenger in a luxurious coach, being driven through mile upon mile of mature wheat fields towards a majestic range of mountains in the distance. Sun beating down outside. Air con keeping things nice in the coach. Clouds building over the foothills that hint at rain. Into a dark, cold tunnel for what seemed like a hour. 10 minutes in reality. Only to emerged in the midst of a storm in full fury. Trees bowing almost to the ground, water rough and choppy on the broad river in the valley bellow. Rain lashing the side of our vehicle, but the other side receiving only spray. The road unseen beneath the severe onslaught of hail and rain. Looming only yards ahead is a blackness of another tunnel in the road as we manoeuvre round a gentle curve. The sound and vibrations of wipers moving over a dry windshield don't help to settled twitchy nerves. Wipers now stilled, and light approaches us a half mile in front. A wave of relief washes through me as the light grows. Intense, bright, and welcoming. The coach breaks out from the gloom of the tunnel into light too bright to look at. Wait for my eyes to adjust, warmth from a hot sun bathes my naked arm, and settles a hard beating heart. The journey through this crown of glory that dominates the view in every direction humbles the proudest, soothes the soul, and calm the spirit with a certainty that nothing will go wrong. Not here, not not. O I so love Floyd. Never the same ride twice. Catch you soon Randi.
great album,so so under rated especially from the die hard Floyd fans. so many amazing songs. i used to listen to division bell on repeat. grows on you even more.
I think it was the first Pink Floyd album I bought after finding them in 1994. May have been 1995. It was after the Pulse concert was televised. I've listened to it so many times over the past (nearly) 30 years. I spent a good chunk of my university loan on buying all of the Pink Floyd albums! 🤣
This is one of my favorite Pink Floyd song, and one of my favorite guitar solo of all time My understanding of the lyrics is as follows: As you might or might not know, Pink Floyd has had a tumultuous history with its members, as the lead member and founder of the band Syd Barret had to be put aside from the band after the 1st album due to mental illness He was replaced by David Gilmour, who is singing and playing guitar on this song Waters, the bassist, and Gilmour then took the « leadership », Waters being mostly the lyricist and Gilmour the musician (even if they both wrote music and lyrics) Unfortunately Syd Barret then died some years later, which affected the band a lot since he was a very close childhood friend from Roger Waters The album Shine on You Crazy Diamond and the song I Wish You Were Here are dedicated to him Then over the years, some dissensions starting to appear between Waters and the band, leading to the departure of Nick Wright (Keyboard), and then some time later, of Roger himself Gilmour then called back Nick Wright, and they released two last albums without Roger, The Division Bell being the last one SO, now that the context has been set up, I think this song is actually Gilmour reflecting on the band, on the arguments he had, on the friends he lost, and how all that affected the band and ultimately their lives And specifically, I think each verse is about a specific period of the band In the first verse, Gilmour talks about Syd, and how special he was, how he was always the « golden boy who would never lose the light in his eyes », and how unfair it is that everything actually went so wrong for him, while everything went so right for Gilmour, who replaced him in the band In the second verse, he talks about Roger, whom he holds responsible for the problems in the band, reproaching him (amongst other things) to not leave enough room to the other members to express themselves, and to basically wanting to be the only creative source of the band. He was then « leading the blind as he (Gilmour) stared at the steel in his eyes He basically also reproaches him of being selfish to leave the band just because they had arguments together (« Did you know it wasn’t only me you were running from ») And in the final verse, Gilmour reflects on the futur, and realizes that despite all the negativity and the bad things that happened to Syd, Waters, and the band in general, he ultimately remembered mostly the good things, and the things they accomplished together, rather than what they lost, as he « thought of you (Syd and Waters), and the years and all the sadness fell away from him » And then he ends up with one of the most beautiful and deep guitar solo I’ve ever heard, as it perfectly conveys all the spectrum of emotions we visited throughout the song into one perfect outburst of mixed melancholy, joy, sadness, regrets and hope Truly exceptional song in my opinion
One of my favorite songs. So complex yet so complete musically .About Gilmore's adverse relationship with Syd and Roger over the years Brlliant lead break❤❤❤ at the end

The guitar solo on this song is up there with Time and Comfortably Numb in terms of of the emotion it evokes in me. Just sublime.
Best solo he ever did IMO
This whole album is a trip. Especially when your tripping. Feels like your soul is immersed this thick gooey warm comforting light
It’s also the shit, sober.
First verse is about original band leader Syd, 2nd verse about Roger Waters, 3rd verse about himself and his wife Polly.
Hmm... interesting
... also consider only Waters being addressed, and in most songs on the record.
The final verse Is dedicated to Syd

1st review of this song I've heard by anyone love this song/CD
It is about two previous band members who were poles apart
This is one of my favorite Pink Floyd song, and one of my favorite guitar solo of all time
My understanding of the lyrics is as follows:
As you might or might not know, Pink Floyd has had a tumultuous history with its members, as the lead member and founder of the band Syd Barret had to be put aside from the band after the 1st album due to mental illness
He was replaced by David Gilmour, who is singing and playing guitar on this song
Waters, the bassist, and Gilmour then took the « leadership », Waters being mostly the lyricist and Gilmour the musician (even if they both wrote music and lyrics)
Unfortunately Syd Barret then died some years later, which affected the band a lot since he was a very close childhood friend from Roger Waters
The album Shine on You Crazy Diamond and the song I Wish You Were Here are dedicated to him
Then over the years, some dissensions starting to appear between Waters and the band, leading to the departure of Nick Wright (Keyboard), and then some time later, of Roger himself
Gilmour then called back Nick Wright, and they released two last albums without Roger, The Division Bell being the last one
SO, now that the context has been set up, I think this song is actually Gilmour reflecting on the band, on the arguments he had, on the friends he lost, and how all that affected the band and ultimately their lives
And specifically, I think each verse is about a specific period of the band
In the first verse, Gilmour talks about Syd, and how special he was, how he was always the « golden boy who would never lose the light in his eyes », and how unfair it is that everything actually went so wrong for him, while everything went so right for Gilmour, who replaced him in the band
In the second verse, he talks about Roger, whom he holds responsible for the problems in the band, reproaching him (amongst other things) to not leave enough room to the other members to express themselves, and to basically wanting to be the only creative source of the band.
He was then « leading the blind as he (Gilmour) stared at the steel in his eyes
He basically also reproaches him of being selfish to leave the band just because they had arguments together (« Did you know it wasn’t only me you were running from »)
And in the final verse, Gilmour reflects on the futur, and realizes that despite all the negativity and the bad things that happened to Syd, Waters, and the band in general, he ultimately remembered mostly the good things, and the things they accomplished together, rather than what they lost, as he « thought of you (Syd and Waters), and the years and all the sadness fell away from him »
And then he ends up with one of the most beautiful and deep guitar solo I’ve ever heard, as it perfectly conveys all the spectrum of emotions we visited throughout the song into one perfect outburst of mixed melancholy, joy, sadness, regrets and hope
Truly exceptional song in my opinion
