I'm happy you found the videos to be interesting and hopefully helpful. When I was driving through Alaska I made these videos so my family and friends could see where I was visiting, and those videos didn't really do well but I've had a couple of people enjoy them and if it makes someone's move to Alaska easier, then it was well worth it 😊

Thanks. I would say do it when you can. I know many people enjoy cruises but if possible you should rent a car and drive from Fairbanks through the interior down to Whittier and Valdez. I think you can see a lot more and have more experiences driving through Alaska although the cruises are also going to be really nice. If you have 14 days that is plenty of time, but you could also do the trip a little quicker in 7 days. If you look at my previous videos this is what I did and you can get a feel for what types of places you can visit if you drive through Alaska.

Hi! As a person who lives in Anchorage it's interesting to see your first impressions. I came to Ak for the summer in 1993 and things have changed a LOT since then. I volunteer at the log cabin visitor center downtown on 4th & F. Did you drop in there? Personally I think Anchorage is kind of an unattractive city, downtown is a little nicer in a way but Anchorage mainly just sort of "grew"' over the years. Yes, the homeless issue has greatly increased over the years. It's very visible now. I used to live closer to downtown and used to love going there but it's changed so much. I actually love the weather here, it's actually quite moderate in winter (in Anchorage) and gotta love the summers! 60's & maybe low 70's. At the visitor center I get to meet people from all over the world. I'm glad you found people here to mostly be friendly. One thing people here like is when a new chain store opens. I remember back before Costco, Walmart, Barnes & Noble and lots of other busines's opened. A lot of people in the state enjoy saying, "Alaska is a half hour out of Anchorage." One correction, the People Mover bus pass for a month is $60.00 except for seniors or disabled, then it's $30.00. A deal either way though. Good video.

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-
      @Life_Is_A_Highway-  Месяц назад +1

No, I didn't stop by there when I was downtown. I'm leaving in a few days but if I have time I'll try to get to downtown again..... I guess Anchorage is a little unattractive because it's not modern, maybe I'm wrong but it kind of reminds me of a city in the 80s or 90s? I do like all of the places in and around the city like Potter Marsh and Kincaid Park and Westchester Lagoon.... thanks for letting me know about the bus pass price.... I'm sure from what everybody has told me I would have liked Anchorage a lot more 20 years or 30 years ago.

It's funny, I was speaking to someone the other day and they said they had anxiety and we talked about how almost everybody has some level of anxiety, and when you find something that calms you down it helps a lot, and there is something for everybody to help them. I had really bad anxiety from 1994 until 2002, and after 8 years of nobody able to help me, I realized anxiety comes from thinking too much about something, and if you take your mind off of thinking about it the anxiety goes away without you even noticing. So when I started doing was always sucking on a hard piece of candy when I knew I was going to be in a situation that gives me anxiety, and I cured myself better than anyone else has. I still get anxiety but I always carry candies with me and I know if I forget them at home they're always easy to pick up anywhere..... with that said even with anxiety you can deal with a lot more than you think you can 😉 I proved to myself it's all in the head and you can beat it. So now you can come to Alaska and enjoy haha I'm glad you like the video 😊

The homeless got worse once a mayor named Berkacraps in 2016 made it a business welcoming this problem,,,,,, this city has turned to crap literally on the streets and parks. They’ve spent over $450 million in the past 3 yrs to house just over 1100 homeless people. Most don’t want to be helped villages sent them here. They like there lifestyle. But the real problem is the ones that need help are not being helped. Hope this helps

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" The blue administration uses tax dollars to try and keep them out of sight out of mind but never will we see homeless tents near a mostly blue neighborhood.

I'm sure there's going to be some people who say it's to out of the way from the rest of the Alaska, I'm sure some people love it there also. There will be more mixed feelings about a place like Juneau compared to a place like Anchorage. I think in Anchorage most people realize there's a big homeless problem and drug problem there, but the city has some really nice things in and around it. In Juneau people are either going to love it cuz it's small and has less people or they're going to say it's nice but just too far from everything else.

The first thing we tell friends and family visiting Alaska is to get OUT of Anchorage as quickly as possible. It’s the second ugliest place to be in Alaska (Fairbanks is #1). The real Alaska starts within minutes of leaving town.
BTW, this video wasn’t anywhere near the parts of Anchorage where crime is high and it isn’t safe to visit. That’s in the Northeast side of town and it’s a pretty disgusting area. Crime, drugs, slums,… you name it. We rarely go to that side of town and even then we stay in the commercial area.

Most of the people that live in Alaska, do not get to experience it the way you do living in remote parts. There is not a road system to most of these places, and for good reason I guess. Also Anchorage has changed so much in the last 10-15 years, that it has almost become unrecognizable. With the homeless, and influx of people moving here, I really want to leave the city and return to the slow life. People here are mostly nice, but do not come here and think you can goof off, especially in the country.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised but I can't help it, it always just surprises me. I can understand why people don't want to live more remote because of more job opportunities in the city, I guess I'm lucky I can work from home otherwise I also wouldn't be able to live where I have and do... thanks for the comment and have a nice weekend 🙂

I don't know where you found friendly people. Were they all riding unicorns? No, they don't like tourists. Yes, we have a lot of homeless. Where are they going to go? The city just moves them from place to place, wrings their hands but never comes up with any real solutions. A lot of them can't go back to their village. For that matter, it takes a lot of money to move a family here or move them back. The drivers are very inconsiderate, except when there are 10 cars behind them and they let some idiot cut the line to get out of a gas station. I dare you to only use the bus as transportation for a month. You will change your mind. People back home assume the hardest part of living in Anchorage is the weather. No, it is all the rude people. You have the right idea to live in Valdez and go to the city when necessary.

    • @Life_Is_A_Highway-

@garydean0308 I'm sorry, whether it was in Fairbanks or the interior or Valdez or Whittier or Anchorage or any of the 30 other towns and communities I visited, I haven't met a single unfriendly person while here. I met friendly people who were cashiers and gas stations, nice people in the Parks, people who helped me knowing I was a tourist, people I've met who have given me good advice and suggestions knowing that I just moved here. I'm not saying all alaskans are going to be friendly, but so far that is all that I have met. I think by categorizing all people in anchorage as not being friendly and not liking tourist is simply not fair. I'm also very friendly and show respect to people when I don't know them, and maybe that makes people be more friendly to me than they typically are, I don't know I'm just guessing.... I also didn't feel that drivers are bad in Anchorage. Yes you have a few people weaving in and out of traffic and a few people driving faster than they should be, but that's something you're going to get anywhere. I can understand though the longer you are in Anchorage the more frustrating drivers are going to be. That's going to happen I suppose no matter what city you live in, the longer one lives in the same area that he doesn't like, the more frustrating and annoying everything becomes and one only sees the worst of the worst all the time....... I've mentioned several times in my previous videos just like you said the homeless have no place to go, so we agree on that... I think no matter where you live in the entire world if you have to take public transportation anywhere it is going to become miserable after a while , that's not only in Anchorage ...you and I have clearly had different experiences in Anchorage, but we seem to agree that there is something about Anchorage we don't like. Luckily though I'm not a city person so I prefer living remote or rural so I don't have to deal with what I didn't like in Anchorage.

The homelessness in Anchorage mostly stems from drug use, which overtime leads to a lot of mental health issues. How these people get involved in the homeless scene vairies. After speaking with residents of Anchorage who work with the homeless, they explained to me that even though drugs became more rampant in the early 2000s, drug use became a big problem around 2015 to 2018, after fentanyl swept through Alaska. I also know a few native alaskans and they explained to me that it's not uncommon that when someone gets kicked out of the tribes, that they will bring those people to Anchorage and basically just drop them off, they lose all of the benefits native alaskans receive including their paychecks as well as their free healthcare, and these people are left on their own with next to nothing and just add to the homelessness and fall into the drug scene unfortunately....... as you see from one of the above comments from an Alaskan who lives in Anchorage, another problem is people tend to pretend there's not a problem and those same people will probably deny everything I just said to you because it's easy to close your eyes and not see what you don't want to see as long as you yourself are living a comfortable life.

@@Life_Is_A_Highway- That has to be terrible. I've seen videos on the homelessness in Anchorage. It is too slippery to die there under the circumstances of drug usage. I hope Anchorage will adopt the same solution to combat it's homeless problem that Houston implemented. It is complicated because Alaska may be America's only hope. Some Texans are trying to "hot tail it" up there because they are tired of all the hustle and bustle, desire community support, and the profound beauty Alaska has to offer. Your video of Alaska reminds me of when I lived in Florida for many years. Florida is regional like Alaska. Very seldom did I meet someone from Florida. I usually met "snow birders" from the Northeast. There is more I can say. This was a great video. Thank you for your coverage and input of the Last Frontier.

Thank you appreciate your comment and happy some people enjoy the video. The hardest time for the homelessness up here of course is during the winter. They do have a few homeless camps in certain parts throughout the city, but the problem with those is they become so dirty or so dangerous they wind up closing them down and leaving the homeless people wandering the streets. This actually happened to one of the camps one week after I got here and you did see more homeless people walking around, even I noticed that after one week. In my opinion, which really doesn't mean much, is that they need to work on the mental health issues many of the homeless have. Yes they opened up a few hotels where the homeless people can stay, but they don't get any mental help while they are there, they are just left alone with a room. But there's not enough rooms for so many homeless people. I doubt the problem will be solved soon, as long as the city ignores the mental health part, I don't see how things could improve.

No, you can go live for n a prison if you want but not having a house doesn't fucking matter to some folk. I probably make more money than your husband does but I live in a tent because fuck you and everyone else.

We don't see any homeless in your videos so to say that there is a homelessness problem in Anchorage seems exagerated to me. It doesn't look anything like skidrow.

I'm not the type of person who's going to go around driving in my car and walking down the street to record people who are less fortunate than I am for my own benefit or just to prove a point in any of my videos. I think it's extremely disrespectful to other humans when RUclipsrs do this because they are doing it to get views and to make money and not to help those people. I just say what I see and what I experience. But with that said, if you just go to Google and type in homelessness in Anchorage, you will get the whole story.... I'm going to talk about homelessness in a future video and I will probably have a couple of homeless people in the videos walking past wherever I am, but even if I did that someone would say I only saw one or two homeless people because I don't stand in the Walmart parking lot in front of a group of homeless people and record them. There's no way I'm ever going to convince everyone I'm telling the truth, and that's not really my goal in my videos. I'm just sharing my personal experiences 😊

The problem is very real. He just didn't record those areas. I live in Wasilla and only go to Anchorage when I have to. And it's going to get much worse now that they've elected a very left wing mayor that takes over 1 July.

@@scottg5588 I was supposed to stay in Anchorage for 4-6 months, but i'm leaving in 3 weeks and heading to the interior. Anchorage was never in my plans, except for a small break before moving again. I am pretty certain I'll be heading to Fairbanks for things I need in the future. I like that Anchorage has some really nice areas around it, and even inside it (like Kincaid Park or Westchester Lagoon), I don't see it improving no matter who takes over to be honest, the city clearly does not care about this issue (just like in every city), and it will always get worse if it is ignored. Staying optimistic regarding this issue is hard.

@@Life_Is_A_Highway- The city has spent millions on this issue including investing in housing options and mental health. There are multiple community organizations and non-profits that are actively trying to help. Sadly, similar to large cities in the Lower 48, it feels like a never-ending problem that persists regardless of how much is invested to improve the situation.
I think the city and residents do care. There are multiple individual success stories that can inspire and create a sense of hope. There is no easy button or one-size solution.

@HAbill I definitely agree that some people do care, and I guess you're always going to have the people who turn their head so they don't see it and just say there's no problems.... and I understand that there are many organizations and the city does house certain individuals. But to me the city doesn't care enough the way they handle things and spend the money. I'll give you one example I just experienced this week. The landlord where I am staying rents two houses. Two of his current tenants in his b&b who rent out a room from him were accepted into the program that houses people who need help or who live on the streets. The city is paying half of the rent and the entire deposit for the house. These two girls have no disabilities, and neither wants to work, but instead just smoke pot all day long. They have jumped from shelter to shelter and lived in their car for many years. They have told me this themselves... they should never have been accepted into the program, and even my landlord said he couldn't believe it it's like the city has so much money they have to spend so they just start giving it to everyone, not only those that really need it or are living on the streets... my issue is this, no one can expect people with addictions and with mental illnesses to go and apply for things like this that were made for them. And the city seems to have the mentality whoever comes to us, we will help them, even if they should not qualify for it.... that is what I meant when I say the city doesn't really care. They have a certain amount of money that they have to spend but they're not going to spend any of that money to go out of their way to help the people who really need it most.... but I also agree with you that it's easier said than done. But I would say it is easily doable if the city didn't just try to meet quotas but instead really cared.
