It’s been exactly a year since I posted my Vala Mal Doran character study and I am overwhelmed by the number of views and comments it has received, especially for the first video on my channel. To keep the Stargate franchise alive, I decided to create another video, this time of one of my favourite underrated friendships from Atlantis - Ronon Dex and Rodney McKay!
I recently got round to watching the series ‘See’ on Apple TV and seeing Jason and David on-screen together again after all these years made me reminisce about these two characters. Although they weren’t given much one on one screen time or storylines, Ronon and Rodney’s friendship is something that always stood out to me amongst the others. It was definitely a love-hate friendship, but despite not always getting along, they always had each other’s backs in all situations and became more protective of one another as the seasons progressed; I also loved how their admiration of one another grew, with Ronon wanting to be smarter and Rodney wanting to be stronger, eventually learning from each other. Just the small interactions - like Rodney healing Ronon’s scars from back when he was a runner, or Ronon fighting to take Rodney to the shrine in order to spend one last day with him - those moments really stayed with me, yet I don’t feel are talked about enough, hence creating this video. Ronan is the team’s protective big brother.
They both have a deep seated feeling of inadequacy, of not being good enough. On the surface, this means that they have to tear others - and each other - down. Deep down, however, they appreciate each other for their respective strengths they just have a hard time articulating it.
100%! It truly is an unspoken bond :)
The misfit characters all perfectly fitting in with each other, that is what I love about this show.
Gives you a bit of hope for reality: no matter how different yet never too different in what matters the most.
The misfit characters really do make it a comfort show!
