I've relocated my Hungry bin from SA to Vic and had to restart it, I'm 3 months in and have vinegar flies, whats best to get rid of them. I may be over feeding them as my population is a lot smaller they are breeding so hopefully that will balance out soon.
I started hungry bin a few months ago so not harvesting yet but my worms are thriving and multiplying. All my kitchen scraps and coffee grounds disappear and weekly I have to top up with about 5 cm of cardboard to keep it filled. The bin is definitely hungry.
G'day mate, sitting back with a nice cold beer watching the Marty's garden show, great vid mate. I love the idea of the hungry bin worm farm I reckon one about half the size of yours would be great for me. God bless you guys.
I got the hungry bin after watching your video. I like it. No problem getting the bottom off and on. Actually my wife uses it and has no problem with the bottom, does it herself and commented to me it was very easy. The only issue seems to be very wet castings, not a lot of “pee” and having to sift through the castings to get the worms that fall into it. Still it’s way less sifting than we used to do. Any suggestions how to get castings less wet, less worms in the castings and why it isn’t peeing? We make sure each time we remove castings to make sure the drain isn’t plugged up.
I just discovered your channel while looking for info on the hungry bin, I have just ordered one for my household. I am a newbe to all things wormish so I am keen to set off on the right foot once my unit arrives
Hi Leslie, you will be fine as long as the bedding is a well finished compost or coco peat that doesn't get warm while breaking down. Mine has done a good job for what i wanted. Thanks for watching.
I made my own smaller version by nesting plastic plant pots, wide shallow pots are best. I cut 95% of the bottom out of the top pot leaving a small lip, then nest it on top of the second pot that's slightly smaller, and use a saucer as a top with a couple of holes to let rainwater and air in. Then made a mesh platform for it to sit on and a leachate tray that slides in underneath.
I have 2 hungry bins already and would like more and absolutely love them. Mine are inside as it gets pretty hot up here in Townsville. I have no problem moving them around as they got wheels. Some more holes and maybe a smaller version too would be great though. Marty do you have a black soldier fly larvae bin for composting what you cant put in your worm farms?
please keep ur hungry bin...I think u can make the bottom pan into a drawer...I would like to see another full year review by u on it since it takes so long to get castings coming out...now the manure was it fresh or aged? Thanks Marty n Karin ;)
Aged manure Sean,,fresh is not the way to go. I will do another update for sure. Thanks for the feedback, I may look into that collection area a little more next time
Love to see all those worms! Thanks for this review, useful information & tips! It does look to be kind of inconvenient if you have to get down there and fuss with it. I do also wonder about the airflow. Maybe one day I'll try a flow through. Your experiment with the bark gives me some ideas!
Hi LP, as I said I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this system, but as seen in my latest video about it I have found multiple uses for it now. 😀
just going thru and thukmbs upping stuff hope your well I just make my own bins I cant afford those fancy things least not yet. but eventually! great video and great work behind the camera!!!!
@@martysgarden nice I would never get this one lol thanks to you!! I have terrib;le chronic pain and that bin would hurt me to operate it. ty for your honest review most people don't give them that way. honest and with the personal honest side as well.
Does the hungry bin produce worm tea or worm leachate ? Worm tea being safe to use on edible veggie gardens while the leachate is not. Thanks for the awesome vids on the hungry bin, very helpful.
HI there how would you rate/compare the hungry bin to the round one I can see behind you when you empty the worm castings? I currently have the round one at home and it's working really well, just getting a bit old, one of the legs is buckling from the weight so i was thinking of upgrading.. Many thanks Jennine
They are two different units,,the Hungry Bin is a lot bigger. So many differences to compare. If you are after a bigger unit they are okay, but not perfect thats for sure. Probably best to check my latest vide on it,,it's newwer than this one
I know this was posted about a year ago but, im just getting into farming and am looking at the hungry bin to start out with on a smaller scale and slowly building up. Im curious however, I see you dumping the worm tea on top of the pile is there a specific reason for that? why dont you use the worm tea in a spray bottle to feed your veg?
Hi Jacob, I do both, feed the plants and keep the bacteria and nitrogen in the system. You should really check out the Worm Wranglers members area Jacob. It's worth every penny and is super cheap for what you get. I have a video coming out tomorrow explaining it more. Keep an eye out for it.😀 Hopefully, see you in there as a member,,you get me a coach too!
Hey wondering what your thoughts are with tobacco for a food source for worms as a fresh (blended/choped) or maybe dried first if at all? i have an abundance of it and wondering if they will get sick or die? cant seem to find any info anywhere
That hungry bin really looks like it's coming along nicely now. The base does look like a bit of a problem for those who are not fully fit or have trouble getting down low but it seems a nice sized unit. I'll stick to my tote bins though as I'm a cheapskate, err I mean, on a budget. 😊 The video production values keep stepping up - nice job Marty and Karin.
Add a few litres of water into the farm regularly, every week, it will help with the compaction toward the bottom and the worms will migrate upwards to where there's more air and food.
Had hungry bin 3 months, checked the castings tray and the bottom 12inches of compost fell out and no castings. Am I checking it too early and should there be compost in my casting tray? My hungry bin isn't filled to the top. I add our household waste to it once a week, plus there is old leaves, and old grass clippings in it.
I know this is an older video, but I wanted to leave a comment and question to support your channel. Now, I have had a few harvests from my bin, and so far I really like it. I agree with you, I wish there was an easier way to harvest without it being so low to the ground! Even on a slightly elevated platform, it's cumbersome and placed too high it can be difficult to get to the top of, so no real good solution yet. I keep my worm bin inside as I live in a very cold environment. I recently had a major issue with the filter being clogged for an unknown period of time, and that leads me to my question. I recently went to clean out the last of the old bedding I was replacing, which had gone anaerobic from a bad batch of food and overfeeding. I noticed that the "sour bin" smell I had was not getting better despite replacing the material and in fact was getting worse, and so I took the bottom off and opened the filter to find a large collection of mold. Despite the awful smell and the poor environment, I still found a few worms surprisingly! Since cleaning the filter, I have had zero problems with the bins smell, and things are improving as expected. Have you had any issues with the filter? Do you have any advise on preventing it from getting clogged? I will be washing it each and every time that I harvest from now on to ensure it remains "clean", but if there is perhaps something you could recommend to improve the drainage properties of the filter system without compromising the integrity of the bin? Cheers!
Hi Russel,,please excuse my late reply, I was on a break after ten years of Martys Garden. I still haven't solved those problems myself yet. It really has a lot to do with the design. I plan on creating some more content soon about this when I have time
Works good for you Steve, that's cool matey. I have my yearly review coming out this weekend on the Hungry bin. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your experience
Yes, I though about George. I have quite a few escapees from down there. That's why you see all the mulch around below the tray. It's a mulch trap to help escapees survive and move into the garden beds
Marty I sense you are not a big fan of this bin ...... your demonstration couldn’t have made it look harder ... the worm wee goes on the garden Mate!! ... when you take the tray off you remove the liquid tray first ..... last of all it probably is a bit difficult for an Aussie to work out!!
I don't mind it Steve, I am releasing my yearly review this weekend. I think with everything you can make improvements. I plan to keep using mine for a lot longer yet and will keep sharing my experience. I like the banter haha,, us Aussies just need to come out with a better version hehe. Cheers Marty
I always recommend that people keep an eye out for second hand ones if they can't afford new. They are quite solid and have a few good points. I think if you were handy you could make something similar.

I would like to try the hungry bin but I would have to keep it outside. The winters are to cold in the Midwest. 😎
Yes, I understand,,outside is a tricky one in super cold conditions Aj
I have a flow through barrel design that I made in my kitchen...we have 120 degree heat here in our summer so its using our a/c
Would a small poly type greenhouse solve that problem. I'm in the dry tropics of Australia so no nothing about cold climates but just a thought

It's more of a leachate this one, but when you do a full flush with water it's okay on edibles.
