    Russell is so cool and educated on most issues! He is telling the story from his eyes! Hip Hop started out good and now has really really changed! Peace!

    @lawyounger The answer isn't leaving "the hood" and never looking back. It's about being a contributor and uplifting "the hood". We need stop being consumers and start owning successful lasting businesses, trademark businesses ESPECIALLY the businesses in our OWN damn communities. So, yes integration is a problem. If these non-black business owners in our neighborhoods were actually our NEIGHBORS then this would be a different case but they aren't ! The wealth goes to their communities...

    If integration destroyed the black community why should we continue to do it Russell? Contradiction? I actually don't see anyone integrating more than blacks. Maybe that's why we so fucked up and the reason integration was fought for was for equal opportunity. Not for you to run from your community.

      You know why other races are successful? They don't integrate ... they have THEIR OWN values tradition beliefs etc. they don't co-opt the awful processed propaganda on tv and call it "culture"

    Mr.Simmons could you please clarify? Our future rest in integration? We don't support each other? Integration is necessary to push an economic and marketing agenda? We gain diversity through integration? OUR/WE=Black? Who purchased the albums that created the wealth that you built? How many times does a dollar get passed within the Jewish community?And ours? 6:33 isn't enough time. I respect your experience and knowledge, I just want to know more.

    @KnowledgeSeeker360 You gotta listen to it a couple of times. Not to put words in his mouth he's saying Integration destroyed the black power structure and, while Ebony and BET certainly are strong, they didn't show hip-hop much love and that Black's must look to integrate into the pre-existing power structure or risk their culture being co-opted and discarded by the mainstream. There's a lot of ideas in here. Your feedback is appreciated.

    @reelblack what was the pre-existing power structure?

  • @reelblack
    @reelblack  13 лет назад

    @treestar I think he's saying we need both things to happen--that there's a need for people to take on a Nationalist perspective the way the Nation of Islam helps in Black Communities, but there's also a need for us to allow people from other cultures access to our own. Both are strategies to build power. Simmons is a firm believer in the latter.

    ....& Integration did destroyed the black power structure.
    & 4those that fought [4]intergration heeey.
    ....it Can & Must Be beneficial, But without POWER, Knowledge, Wisdom & Understanding.... it WON'T Be.

  • @treestar

    @reelblack ..So what he's saying is that in order to save hiphop or black entertainment from being taken by "mainstream" WE have to be the ones who integrate it and not mainstream Hollywood? So that means invest in others then take that income or wealth and invest in each other right? I'm just trying to understand him. I'm confused maybe because I don't see integration as the answer. Investing in others in order to support our projests, yes but integration, no.

    Some of these lost/confused comments shows you the reason why we're stuck behind when we should be @ the top. If you don't get what he's saying then listen a few times. It just might sink in eventually if you're not leaning impaired in some sort of way. You either agree or don't but if you don't, give some other thoughts. Don't just dismiss it!

    What I got out of this is that he's saying blacks need to take the values which come from the black community and share them until they become a part of the culture at large. To oversimplify the logic, it's like how tacos are sold at Jack in the Box and pastrami is in every deli. I think jazz has succeeded in doing the very thing he's proposing. People don't call it black music, it's not something you see on black channels only, it's jazz, but it came from black musicians.

    To me, he is simply saying, sell to everyone but uplift your community with the proceds. Each one teach one. It's this simple, take at&t, they don't market there product to a certain race, that would be foolish, it's not good business sense. Instead sell to all and accumulate wealth, not just riches. This is the best way to give back to your hood/community. Riches and wealth are too different things. Wealth is the ability to say yes you can... or no you can't, combined with riches, interns gives one influence and power. I think this is what he means.

    the black culture is so polorizing, that most black people cant pathom what he's trying to say, the best example is when black shows were hot with the new networks like fox and WB, that was welcomed exploittation and everbody shooked their ass to cash in, but when that era was over, they had no control over that very market taht they helped these networks established, we were content with the visuals, but we werent concerenced with wat made it possible and who's making theses decisions..
