its really sad when you have to resort to youtube to learn this shit. getting anything done at my community college is like pulling teeth. everyone has an attitude and doesnt really want to help. they just want you to leave
Alina Mitchelson Thank you for your comment, I always wanted to know what happens if a family is making to much money. People often tell me that they only would receive $500 in financial aid and would have to come up with the rest of the money for a $60,000 cost to attend college.
It’s not a myth if your family makes too much , you probably only qualify for loans which are not terribly bad but you have to paid interest before or after depending on the loan. Thank you for the video… it’s really informative
GPA does count for fafsa , many kids get cut off of FAFSA due to their gpa being to low or even withdrawling from classes. i hope all of you do your reasearch and dont only go off of what this video says. been cut off from fafsa for low GPA before lol been there done that.
I think he's probably more referring to high school GPA which is not looked at for the FAFSA. But if you receive a low GPA or drop multiple classes in college, you are not meeting SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) for your college and the college can terminate you from receiving federal student aid (the aid from the FAFSA, including federal student loans). For example, my school requires students to have a 2.0 GPA and a 67% pace (pass/not drop 67% of the classes they register for). If a student fails to meet these standards for one semester, they are placed on "warning status". Which means they are still eligible for aid that semester, but need to pull their grades up and/or quit dropping classes FAFSA paid for. If a student does not meet these requirements for another semester in a row, they are terminated from financial aid and not able to receive it at this school the following semester. The termination is specific to that college though. If you transferred to a college you hadn't been to before, it would sort of be like a clean slate and you could still get financial aid at the new school. Also, the financial aid office has a termination appeal for students if they had extenuating circumstances... like a legitimate reason for why they performed poorly (ex. death of a loved one, personal injury/hospitalization, etc.). If the appeal is approved, the student can receive aid at that school again. Or if the appeal route doesn't work, a student would have to pay their own way until they bring themselves back into "good standing" status where they are eligible to receive aid again. Hope this helps.
Same that happened to me. Then I decided to change schools (from the south of the state tobthe north) and get away from distracting friends. I paid for 1 semester out of pocket, focused only on school and work, got great grades and wrote a letter to the dean explaining my situation and how i would be better and he overturned the aid. Now Im on my last semester, not a straight A student but on a helluva lot better path now than 2 years ago
Ok so 3 years ago I applied and got approved for financial aid. I was 18 years old out of highschool going to a community college, I had to list my parents and their income and also my siblings that my dad claimed since we still lived at home (8 kids) I'm now 21 and moved from Texas to NC to he with my fiancee and I dont want to apply for fasfa until next year when I become a resident of NC so I dont have to pay the out of state school. 1. Can I still apply for fasfa for an out of state school? If so will it cover my out of state expenses? 2. Is it better to be married or independent on the fasfa? 3. I have a small paying job and my fiancee is 32 years old he makes 75k a year. Will that affect my fasfa? 4. I thought about re-applying for fasfa however on the website (I have account) it wants me to list my parents... but I shouldn't because I'm not in Texas anymore and I'm paying for my own Bill's and slowly becoming a resident. 5. Should I just go to a community college and speak to someone about this?
I believe my parents will neither financially or mentally support me when I get in college (in 3-4 years). What do I do? Do I register as a dependant or independent?
Same thing here for me. I’ll be graduating next year and my family won’t pay for my Studies. I have to figure it out on my own. Truly hard. I do hope things get settled for you
Hi Kantis! I was halfway through the video until I remembered I just saw you at the STEM conference in September! Thank you for this informative video.
OK so I'm dumb.. My daughter got FAFSA student aid and she got her whole 1st year paid for, however, she just got a check for like $2,500 back from them??? Why would they send her $ back?? Also, does she have to pay back the FAFSA aid?
I recently filled out Fafsa & it was super easy. All I did was give them my social & permission to see my tax history. So easy I was done with fafsa & filled out online classes all in the same day
Fin Aid is based on your grade you will get approved for a certain amount regardless of grades. HOWEVER. You need to be in good standing with the university. You need at least 2.0 gpa and you need a certain percentage of progression to keep it.
Myths not addressed: •you won't pay back the amount given •you can keep studying for years to come without running out of FAFSA. •you can apply for FAFSA at any time of the year, it is not a First Come First Served.
@@veanne Technically FASFA doesn't give you anything. FASFA makes you aware of what is available. If you receive grants, that is money that does not need to be paid back. If you receive loans, you will have to pay those back according to the terms of the loans. Some loans defer payment for a year after graduation so students can begin earning an income before being required to pay off the loan debt.
FASFA can be applied for at any time of the year, that is true. However, schools begin handing out scholarships as applications are completed. The most money is available in October. As scholarship money gets used up, those scholarships may not be available to students who sign up later. Always complete the FAFSA as soon as possible and begin talking to college as soon as they allow for the best chance of scholarship availability.
Savings? How much importance is placed on this, after working for decades, i have accumulated savings and am on SS and pension which is small, Savings?
Crimson Smith so in order to receive financial aid you need to be consecutively meeting a 2.0 gpa as an undergraduate or 3.0 as a graduate. I think he is just referring to that applying for FAFSA doesn’t require a gpa. Hope that helps!! :)
Crimson Smith Your grades do not preclude you from applying or getting financial aid. However, when you are awarded financial aid, per federal guidelines, you need to successfully complete 2/3 of the maximum credits you are registered for that particular semester as well as maintain a 2.0 or higher gpa. Failure to meet these requirements will constitute in you losing your financial aid.
3 years (6 semesters) for community college and if you transfer, you get another 3 years (6 semesters) but you have to transfer to a University. Since I'm in CA, I have to finish my associates for transfer in 3 years (they cover summer too) and I have to transfer to a CSU in order to keep receiving financial aid. If you stay longer than 3 years, they will either 1. Cut your funding, assuming you took less than 12 units a semester and also assuming you saved some of the FAFSA money 2. They will aid you based on your position (just conceived a child, got in a major) accident, etc.) but will not give you the full amount you've recieved the previous years.
