A devout catholic doesn’t guarantee a good catholic. Being devout only means they’re seen as very active in church and worship activities. Like Sunday mass attendance, holy rosary & novenas, and observance of Lent. Here in the Philippines we call bad catholics as “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo” (Holy Dogs, Horse Saints). From the outside the like to project an image of good devout catholics. When they’re actually rotten horrible human beings to their fellow man.

Nobody from any of those places would want freedom and democracy, because they are already represented in their respective countries. They have self determination, Hong Kong does not.

Is that hard to understand?... It's like criticising a mayor for listening to the president.
Disappointing report once again...please hire reporters that really tell the whole story and also redo the title ... Hong Kong belongs to China, of course they have ties....duh. Didn't even mention why create this Bill at the first place.
Who was first HKers as the Governor of Hong Kong? From 1843 to 1997, all governors were Btitishs. There was no vote in HK before it reunified by mainland China.
Lam is CEO of the Chinese SAR of Hong Kong, her direct superior is the central government of PRC, of course she has close ties to the ruling party CCP and part of her duty is report and advice Beijing on Hong Kong issues and Vice versa from the central government. The U.S. Presidential election is not a direct vote either. The party delegates of choses the nominees for the two parties and non party affiliated citizens are not privy to the the process at all. Furthermore, the electoral college system used for the election is not a demographically equally distributed with the smallest states still garnering 3 electors regardless of the population size. Compounding that, the candidate with the most vote in the state gains all the electors.
She says time and again like " it is not easy'" or difficult. Read in between her lines to fathom the real thing. Wonder if she is under duress or coerced not to quit. Guess what?
In her public addresses, she strikes people as an arrogant, incompetent administrator. Some call her a puppet of Mainland. Seemingly she puts her political ambitions above the well-being of Hong Kong and it's people. It's disgraceful that she identified herself a devout Catholics! Judging on how she has handled the Extradition Bill and the subsequent unrest, she is a heartless "soul." Doubtful she has a soul and a conscience!
I don't know Lam, but I know that student leader "Wong Chi-Fung" declared that they are following Julie Eadeh, head of the political department of the US Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau.(Students leaders have salary everyday~ )
People rise to level of incompetence when promoted. This is what is called " Peter's" principle in management studies. As a civil servant ,she may be hard working and all that. But, as a leader and Chief Executive, it is different ball game, altogether. If a leader is not of sterner stuff, it will be disastrous to the followers.
the main reason makes HK a financial center is its access to the giant market in mainland given by China. Foreign investment would never stay in HK if HK lost its mainland market and political priorities such as ‘0’ tax given by China. China could totally transfer this priority from HK to Shanghai. One thing you need be clear is that HK GDP only ranked 4th in China. There were several opportunities for HK to upgrade its industry. HK didn’t catch the chance and continue to rely on old industries which benefits from political/economic priorities assigned by China. If HK itself cannot work hard and focus on own development, no matter how violent they become, they cannot win their own future.
the fact that you see hk only at its GDP is pathetic, if Hong Kong is so unimportant to china, the PLA would’ve been shooting protesters like they did in 4th June 1989. The value of Hong Kong is, it is a WINDOW for foreign investment to go into china, like what you have mentioned, but also chinese money going out. I actually sympathise you all, cause you might be born in a world where information might be fake, and what you think the 100% of what’s actually happening the the world is in fact maybe 10% of the truth, so yall are born with that deficiency of identifying what’s right and what’s wrong. and your education taught you to only look at result but not the process and how things turn out to be the result you saw, this is portrayed in your respond to this video, you think HK’s value only lies on GDP. 少年你太年輕了
This person was the reason riots started happening in the first place, and then continued to fan the flames by being incompetent. Why hasn't she stepped down?
Still don’t know why can’t she quit? It is not a lifetime job plus the financial lost and social drama she made. The Britain will not speak up about Hong Kong, it is better for her to go no matter what. She really takes the political leadership into a new low level. Whoever appointed her as the chief executive definitely wasn’t thinking critically and comprehensively about her. The Chinese government wanted a marionette, now it wants a scapegoat.
Nah they only stupid, why do you suicide only because of this bill?, and are you really check the validity of this information?, You protesters only become rioters and disturb innocent people, and destroy their property
Carrie Lam's closeness with China is really a blessing in disguise.Much of the protesters' anger has been directed at Lam who receives the blows on behalf of Beijing.Lam knows that prosperity of Hong Kong is tied to success of China as a strong economic power.China treats Hongkong as part of China. It wants Hongkong to be great. But it cannot give democracy now. Neither did the UK hold any elections to elect local Members of Parliament.UK acquired HK after defeating China in the Opium Wars. Even US benefited from the opium trade.
Nicholas Cage sure independent California from USA, independent Scotland Northern Ireland from UK, independent Catalonia from Spain, independent Brittany Corsica island from France, independent Quebec from Canada, strongly supported
The question is not: who is she, but: what does she do. Obviously, she's leading Hong Kong away from democracy and into the totalitarian arms of China. Her being a devout catholic has nothing to do with it. Some devout catholics did great things, others were Nazis. To be clear: I'm not comparing her with either, I'm just saying that her faith doesn't matter, it's what she does with Hong Kong that matters. Hopefully this channel is about actual international politics and doesn't aim to be a human interest channel.
How is that the same? Hong Kong is a nominal part of Communist China but is politically mostly independent and has their own leader and form of government. Their citizens clearly do not support further integration with Communist China judging from the large scale protests in recent months. This is unlike your example of LA, which is a part of California, a state in the US. They have their own government, but are directly administered by the state and to a lesser extent federal government. Completely different situations...
She is lucky that Joseph Zen is compromising. He is so hardliner in some views he could have excommunicated her if he was still the Cardinal and not retired.
No it is not. If that logic is correct, why are there thousands and millions of protesters who grew up in those same conditions, yet still oppose the PRC? Carrie Lam must thus be the exception, and Hong Kong therefore not truly a consenting part of China under the PRC.
@@annietang9599 Hey, it's Annie! Yes that is true, they should not be ignored. But as i understand it, that is irrelevant to the initial statement, as well as to my reply. Firstly, it is incorrect to assume that people who stay at home are necessarily people who do not support the ideals of the protesters. It does not follow that the lawyers who only joined the protests at the later stages, and the students who will have to go to school in September, must necessarily lean towards the PRC ONCE they stop attending protests. Statistically, there must be some people in HK that lean towards the PRC, but it is not consistent to tie their perspective to whether or not they attend protests. Just because they do not attend, that does not mean that they definitely do not support.
@@annietang9599 Second, it is true that the people of Hong Kong are of Chinese heritage, but freedom of speech, economy, etc. under the British has led to a necessary divergence from that initial identity. Additionally, the reason for mass protest lies in HK's desire to keep their government/processes and autonomy separate from the PRC, and the people's frustration at HK govt's failure to uphold those standards, as well as to solve current socio-economic divides and housing scarcity. The fact remains that the vast majority of Hong Kong citizens have expressed support for, are affected by, or are in continued attendance of HK protests, even as the police force, HK govt, and mainland media have been documented as under-reporting protestor's numbers (thanks to HK's free media that allows information to be corroborated by different sources rather than a centralized entity). Thus, the second premise must be rendered false due to the ideological differences that arise from the foundation of HK's history and current state of affairs. Tldr: HK and China are of Two systems and beliefs despite being One state, and are therefore not the same.
hiro progatonist hiro progatonist I understand one country two system. Therefore, I do agree that Hong Kong and mainland China have different political systems, but still Hong Kong is part of China. Carrie Lam and many people in Hong Kong are pro CCP. and I understand a lot of Hong Kong people are against CCP due to many years of biased media trying to demonize the party. Time is changing. CCP is changing. I hope Hong Kongnese people can go to mainland China And see the place and government, not from the TV. T. T
I am seriously torn. I'm not a Hongkonger or Chinese mainland, I'm just a Chinese descent from an asian country. In one side, China, even though its a communist, really growing rapidly on country's development and economic equality and I think Hongkong will also be a much better country, especially for those who are very very poor. And pointing lasers at peoples eyes is a criminal offence. A split second can cause permanent damage to ones retina. Police should arrest every single criminal shiny laser onto peoples eyes.
Shes more like a puppet than a leader. God bless HK!
Hong Kong is so fascinating so many interesting problems and cultures
Speaking of which, do you know the hidden fact that Hong Kong prospered in the past because of mainland China, since China historically was blocked by the Colonialist Anglo West, and can not export their products directly to outside world; thus Hong Kong basically acted as a middle man, relabeling products from China and taking commission on it. Moreover, Protest groups/ Human Rights organizations that Capitalist West helps founded in place like Hong Kong are nothing more than the forefronts of Tit-for-Tat protocol in place, in times of event that their capitalist imperialist interests are threatened; what they basically do is unleash those watch groups and organizations as part of their all out effort to destabilize any region that they feel threaten or simply to expand their interests. Besides, many ethnic Hong Kong people are working class folks who work for these Western interests; their companies and businesses. blog.chinadaily.com.cn/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=894096

I have visited Hong Kong in 2015 I love the culture and their people are so educated and nice
Too bad I’m seeing this right now
I hope everything will be placed again with peace ✌🏻
If they stop fighting for their freedom now, they will never get another chance again. They have to stay strong and persistent. Fight for your independence.!
Hong Kong is part of China
its a treason to think that kind of way. Any country who has a region that wants to separate will be dealt militarily

devout catholic lol
A devout catholic doesn’t guarantee a good catholic. Being devout only means they’re seen as very active in church and worship activities. Like Sunday mass attendance, holy rosary & novenas, and observance of Lent.
Here in the Philippines we call bad catholics as “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo” (Holy Dogs, Horse Saints). From the outside the like to project an image of good devout catholics. When they’re actually rotten horrible human beings to their fellow man.
Ikr! A devout catholic and a commie who knew?
The Catholic league is trash!
@Sean Sebastian Relax! It's the priests and the church. There are good Catholics out there. Leave them be.
@@iMadrid11 i can't believe anyone is catholic anymore...the black pope sits in the vatican ...plus the pope has been involved in ignoring abuses in the church...some say he is a luciferian ...and here is the meaning behind the name vatican..The word "#Vatican" literally means "Divining Serpent," and is derived from Vatis = Diviner and Can = Serpent.
...so have you been fooled into following the devil parading as a holy messenger from God? what if every pope was corrupted by a demonic possession during his reign, the last one retired and is living. maybe he found a way to free himself...not sure if any of what i am saying is true...my imagination just ran away there...but you never know..crazy times...

Close tie? Hong Kong is part of China! Do u expect she is not tie to China?
They mean she has China's views duh.
Remember Hong Kong is not a sovereign state yet .
The glorious days of the Chief Executive,Curry lamb are over. Her mishandling of the extradition bill would cause her downfall. She still has not read the message on the wall calling her resignation after three months of turmoil in Hong Kong.A leader who has lost Public confidence should just resign. That's the right thing to do.Be honourable and humble yourself.
Supports from Hawaii, Scotland and Quebec! Free us!
Nobody from any of those places would want freedom and democracy, because they are already represented in their respective countries. They have self determination, Hong Kong does not.
NYT Are you serious?“The HK leader with close ties with China” She is managing a city that belongs to China, although under one country two systems, there has one hundred reasons for China to make sure the HK government be on the same page with Beijing. Is that hard to understand?... It's like criticising a mayor for listening to the president.
美国人可能还真不明白为什么一个市长要听总统的话
If she only listened from the very first protest, this will not happen anymore. So sad for Hongkong and Hongkongers.
Hi dear how're you doing ?
Hello ✋
Disappointing report once again...please hire reporters that really tell the whole story and also redo the title ... Hong Kong belongs to China, of course they have ties....duh. Didn't even mention why create this Bill at the first place.
with close ties to China??? she is the major of a Chinese city…period

Who was first HKers as the Governor of Hong Kong? From 1843 to 1997, all governors were Btitishs. There was no vote in HK before it reunified by mainland China.
Tristan Y Yes. This is historically true. Chris Patten was the last governor of HK, not voted by the people of Hong Kong.
What is wrong for her to be close to China? Hong Kong is part of China, isn't it? (whether you like it or not)
Its the bitter truth
Yet to support me

Step down, puppet Lam.
She says time and again like " it is not easy'" or difficult. Read in between her lines to fathom the real thing. Wonder if she is under duress or coerced not to quit. Guess what?
but i thought Hongkong never had voting rights PRE1997?
If they riot like this under colonial British, they are already in jail by now. Or worst dead.
KS2996's Gaming Channel but you do get to vote under circumstances, where as there were no voting at all before, yet you never protested?

The Hong Kong Leader With Close Ties to China. What are you implying NYT? Like she shouldn't?
Deedy Fenton exactly.
Full freedom for Hongkong is much better.
林鄭,please step down at last! Hong Kong needs a leader who cares about Hong Kong people!
"Who is Carrie Lam?"
A puppet
People rise to level of incompetence when promoted. This is what is called " Peter's" principle in management studies. As a civil servant ,she may be hard working and all that. But, as a leader and Chief Executive, it is different ball game, altogether. If a leader is not of sterner stuff, it will be disastrous to the followers.
A remote controlled by China
the main reason makes HK a financial center is its access to the giant market in mainland given by China.
少年你太年輕了
This Title is so laughable. It is like saying the Mayor of Los Angeles or the Governor of California has close ties with the United States!
Totally!
Indeed
This person was the reason riots started happening in the first place, and then continued to fan the flames by being incompetent. Why hasn't she stepped down?
Most likely Xi won't let her. He will make her stay and be the face of the oppression.
strange discription, HK is part of China and it's leader can't be tied with China? What message do you want to spread to the world?
Step down Carrie Lam. Don't control your people if they don't like you anymore. Free Hongkong.
Hello ✋
The best
Hola hermoso
Still don’t know why can’t she quit? It is not a lifetime job plus the financial lost and social drama she made. The Britain will not speak up about Hong Kong, it is better for her to go no matter what. She really takes the political leadership into a new low level. Whoever appointed her as the chief executive definitely wasn’t thinking critically and comprehensively about her. The Chinese government wanted a marionette, now it wants a scapegoat.
支持林郑月娥女士!加油💪
She is a Chinese according to herself!!!
Who is Donald Trump? The US leader with close ties to the US.
haha exactly. When I read the title I was like, duh! are you stupid?
Keep resisting! Don't give up!
5 people suicide for this bill, Carrie Lam didn't show her regret for this!!
Nah they only stupid, why do you suicide only because of this bill?, and are you really check the validity of this information?, You protesters only become rioters and disturb innocent people, and destroy their property
That seems suspicious. Maybe they did something and fear what this bill will mean for them?
Hk people are over reacting.
Patrick Kyo how is it overreacting when it is an indication that Beijing is gradually tightening its iron fist?
Proud of Tsai Ing Wen, the President of Taiwan.
This woman lies at a convenience. She should be put in jail for bringing on this horrific situation. She is the main cause.
Hong Kong is a part of China of course she is close to China.

The land is its people. And if its people wants to leave any notion against it is tyranny.

You know how confused those commentators are dont you. Lols.
Completely different situations...

shes born and raised in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a part of China. Of course it’s okay for her to lean towards China government.
No it is not. If that logic is correct, why are there thousands and millions of protesters who grew up in those same conditions, yet still oppose the PRC? Carrie Lam must thus be the exception, and Hong Kong therefore not truly a consenting part of China under the PRC.
hiro progatonist but there are still millions of people choose to stay home or go to work regularly. We should not ignore these people either.
I hope Hong Kongnese people can go to mainland China
And see the place and government, not from the TV. T. T
Oh boy NYT your backers must be so delighted to this title.
''The Hong Kong Leader With Close Ties to China'' is that not part of the job description?
I am seriously torn. I'm not a Hongkonger or Chinese mainland, I'm just a Chinese descent from an asian country. In one side, China, even though its a communist, really growing rapidly on country's development and economic equality and I think Hongkong will also be a much better country, especially for those who are very very poor. On the other side, these youngsters who only want freedom and independency aren't wrong.
