I had an idea for a book that was made up of short leaps that Al tries to keep Sam's attention off of some danger he is in the middle of. It tied up a bunch of things and had Sam accidentally giving Bellisario the idea for the show Quantum Leap. Unfortunately, the books were discontinued before I could get it finished.
Allison, I couldn't comment on the finale video. I've come to see the finale of Quantum Leap as Al finally leaping home. I realize that there was ambiguity in the production. But Al was the one who was lost the WHOLE time, not Sam. The last line of the series is, "Al is alive and he's coming home." It's some serendipitous and artistic stuff having his picture Leap at the end, but it's awesome.
I had the honour to have my first fanfic, Terror Firma, considered by Ginjer Buchanan of Berkeley books for possible inclusion in the novelisation series. In the end I lost out to Loch Ness Leap. If anyone is interested, the letters I got from Ginjer are in the notes for the fanfic on AO3.
I lowkey want these books to come back. I know Sam has done so much since the last one I really wonder what he’s been up to. What’s next? I love this series and I’m on my way to collect all of them.
I ordered a QL novel off of EBay and was so excited. Sadly, I couldn’t make it past the first 10-20 pages. It was so generic and dull. Felt like an English major scrambled to complete a 100 page assignment at the last minute and padded it out with filler. 10 pages in, and all that happened was Al walked down a hallway. It was mostly just a description of what his clothes looked like and how his cigar smelled. Not exactly a page turner. I wanted to leap into my past self and prevent the eBay order.
Love the idea of Sam leaping into a set of twins and is split into good and evil Sams, the evil one is thinking of just taking over this guys life so hes freed from being a leaper, thats a cool concept i could have totally seen done in the show, maybe as a 2-3 parter where All is trying to track him down n Evil sam makes it more and more difficult. Awesome list! Absolutely love those painted oldschool covers :D
This really takes me back. I read ALL of those books as a kid, while the show was still very fresh. Even then I got the impression that they were very much glorified fanfics (but I loved them anyway). I'm surprised you didn't mention the book where Sam lept into a little girl and had to cope with being smaller than everyone else around him.
As a Brit, I was always disappointed that Sam never leaped into someone in the UK. (I think the vampire episode was set in England, but that hardly counts.)
Quantum Leap is an amazing show. Lee Harvey Oswald part 2 (the BEST episode in my opinion) was one of the only times I remember where a TV show caused my dad to literally hold his breath and cry a little bit at the end. I wish I had these novels as a kid. I would have read all of them. I'd love to hear you talk more about them!
I vaguely remember that episode. From what I recall Sam's mind slowly merged with Oswald's, leading me to believe that even among the writing staff they couldn't agree if over whether Sam was replacing people or actually doing the body swap thing.
Same I'm (as a fan of classic doctor who, primeval and Sapphire and Steel -which QL seems to be kinda like so it seems like something I'd like) totally going to check it out now
Also loved Search and Rescue and Double or Nothing as well. Was hoping you'd mention them. You should do a review of the Innovation comics if you haven't already.
You really should try to watch the show. I watched it as a kid and re-watched the first couple series only a few years ago. I was surprised to find that it really hadn't aged badly, the way many of these kind of sci-fi shows do, mainly because it is based so much on characters rather than technology, and many of the themes are timeless. I honestly think it's one of the best series every made.
Hahaha you’re funny as hell. Glad I stumbled upon this channel. Always loved QL and wondered if there was more on it. Use to watch it when I was a kid.
I knew I was subbed to this channel for a reason. I love the show. Loved this spotlight on the relaunch novels. I'm still one of the crazies out there looking for a Bakula led QL revival.
Having listened to the Quantum Leap Podcast for the past year or so, it's funny hearing 2016 Allison say that she doesn't know any of the novel authors. Ziggy says there's a 100% chance that'll change!
I read a handful of these back in the day. I vividly recall one section of a story that takes place in the "future" with Al and he sees the world changing around him due to Sam's actions in the past, but no one else does. It had something to do with them sharing brain tissue or something like that. It was an effective, haunting scene -- well, at least my younger self thought so.
That sounds like Random Measures, where Sam changes things so Al has another wife, but I think other novels also touched on the fact Al was the only one who remembered time changing in the present.
@@AllisonPregler A lot of the tie-in novels I've read over the years (and I've read more than my fair share, much to the chagrin of multiple English teachers) have all started to blur together in my head. That could be the one. Thanks for the assistance!
You have officially made me hesitant to fork out $200 or so to buy a copy of Mirror's Edge online. But on the comments Tom killing someone it's never really addressed that Sam kinda 'unalives' two people in The Leap Home. "Lisa doesn't marry No Nose! She doesn't marry you either, but she doesn't marry No Nose!" But um... Al mentioned they had two kids earlier in the episode....
I had a lot of these books back when I was OBSEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSEEED with Quantum Leap. Thanks for bringing back so many memories as I read a lot of the ones you mentioned here.

Quantum Leap. I love that show. I stayed up late on Sci-Fi channel to watch and was elated when G4 ran reruns. It sucks the music rights were taken away. Anyway these books sound like a fun read though kooky. Thanks for bringing these up. Hopefully Mr. Bakula and Mr. Stockwell appear at a con near me because I would like to meet them. I am scared to fly.
I never heard there was a debate about how he leaps Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was obvious from the beginning that he “mind leaps”. Because in the opening monologue it clearly states he “faces mirror images that were not his own!” How can you do that if your _body_ leaps? Everyone would be able to tell that it’s not really you? And they said that only kids of a “certain age” can know the difference.
The one that brings back Troian Bellisario's character... has been a long time since I read it so maybe I am remembering it wrong, but didn't the "Angel" Sam and Al Met when Sam leaped into a cab driver also appear in this story, thus making it a continuation of two previously unrelated episodes? I never knew that the writers were fan fiction writers, but that makes a lot of sense with that one... only a fan fic writer would have tried that.
This is the first time I’ve ever even heard of there being Leap novels, though I’m a life long fan of the show. Is there any novel or fan fiction that deals with a Leap from the perspective of the person Sam Leaped into, being in Sam’ s place back in the future?
QL was probably my favorite show growing up, along with Friday the 13th the Series (yay late 80s/early 90s!), so this was really fun to see. Never read the books but I want to now! Also, as a big PLL fan, I LOVE that young Troian Bellisario was in both QL and Tequila and Bonetti. :D
Sam finally realizes that each leap is not in time but actually is in alternate realities. He leaps into his original reality just to find out he is dead there. Ziggy leaps Sam and to again ease his memory.
damnit, Alison, you turned me onto this show... as if I didn't have enough series to watch with Supernatural, LostGirl, BeingHuman, Farscape, StargateSG1, MacGuyver, Haven, Merlin, DarkMatter, OnceUponATime, Fringe, Torchwood, Dr. Who, Sherlock, Gotham, Warehouse13, WhenCallsTheHeart, Twin Peaks, Alias, El Internado, Nikita, Scream Queens, Primeval, etc...
I got 'Too Close for Comfort' for Easter one year, and I never read it, and I'm now I'm glad I didn't. I used to be a big fan of the show until the ending (that kinda killed it for me), but otherwise this was hilarious. I'm loving the cover art on this series, because it's either the same repeated tracing of a publicity photo, Al turning into old ragged Scott Baio, or (as you said) guyliner for Sam as he overlooks a plane crash. This stuff is MADNESS.
Between 1996-2000 I collected the majority of the QL novels. My favorite out of the novels was Odyssey, the one where Sam Leaps into a 12-year-old genius at a gifted school. Back in the Waiting Room, Al befriends the kid Sam Leaped into. Fun story. Knights of the Morningstar was one of the novels that took place within the TV series; it was the fifth season, I think. Sam meets up with Alia and at one point, Alia tries to actually kill Sam during a reenactment of a jousting tournament...
Will not tolerate this slander of Pultizer! /s But seriously, that is the best QL novel by far. It made me cry, and honestly the disco scene is nice little bit of levity. (Sam leaps into a psychiatrist at Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1975, whose patient is Al, a newly returned POW with PTSD and who is involved in some political intrigue. At one point, Sam takes Past Al out to disco club which the real Sam knows Al is fond of. It's a way to get Al out of the hospital for a few hours and have some fun, and he does indeed have fun dancing, until the club fills up and the crowd triggers Al's PTSD.) The two scenes in the novel that got me where when Al describes to a fellow POW a devastating incident that happened to him, and then later when Sam-as-the-doctor comforts Al, who is having nightmares, by singing "With a Little Help from my Friends," the same song a fellow POW used to sing.
Dumb question, forgive me. Since you're such a fan of Quantum Leap, why haven't you done episode reviews or a series retrospect? Thank you, great reviews!
This was fascinating! I want to read some of these books, but I don't like the idea of reading any that go with the "mind-switch" version of how leaping works. It's just not right. Do you have a list of books that are consistent with TV Show-canon and don't contradict it?
It's been a bit since I read them, I think the ones that were the most obviously canon-divergent were Prelude, Carny Knowledge (or just known as Quantum Leap The Novel), The Wall, and Search and Rescue. Most of the time the mind/body thing is either unmentioned or not relevant.
Cool, thanks for the info! I've been rediscovering the show on DVD over the last few weeks, and it holds up great. It's actually a little better than I remembered, in fact. So now I'm on a QL kick. Maybe I'll pick up some of those novels the next time I'm at the used book store ...
Hi Allison I love your videos and I loved quantum leap when I was young. I also loved a show called highlander, and oh boy! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I watched the highlander 2 movie and all I could think was what a great video you would make from that movie. 🤣 Love your videos 💕💕💕💕💕💕
So, wait a second: "Another Mother" got a sequel where the little girl dies as an adult and Al never fulfills his promise? This seems a bit odd since the very next episode is the one with the Super Bowl XXX prediction (thereby giving us a firm date where the "present" was), which means you can safely presume that Al did in fact visit her as a 19/20 year old adult. That's how I've always assumed the episode worked out, at least.
I bought and read every single one of the novels when they were published. They’re still on my bookshelf: 18 in total, plus the A to Z reference book. Back then, I embraced and consumed anything QL, even if it wasn’t considered “canon.” Of course, I can look back on the books now and realize that quite a few of them really weren’t that great. My favorites are definitely “Foreknowledge” and both of the books that L. Elizabeth Storm wrote: “Pulitzer” and “Angels Unaware.” I also tracked down all 13 of the comic book issues and found them to be entertaining for the most part. My wife and I are huge Quantum Leap geeks. In fact, one of the big things that cemented our relationship when we started dating was when I told her I wrote a bunch of fan fiction “episodes” that were published on a website called The Virtual Seasons. That piqued her curiosity about me to a whole new level. I introduced a “rogue leaper” who was trying to restore history back to the way it was before Sam or the evil leapers began changing everything. It was building up to something catastrophic.
I knew you shared that lost Mirror Image ending you found on the Al’s Place website, but wasn’t sure if you knew about or read the Virtual Seasons. Glad you were a fan of the storyline! Real-life complications got in the way of finishing the grand finale for a very long time, but I’m hoping to finally have it finished and out there within the next few months.
They're fun, though short so the stories usually don't dig deep enough for me. Really enjoyed the one where they're waiting at a gas station and just chatting. I also laughed at the one where he leaps into an alien.
OTOH it wasn't until the last 3 chapters of Double or Nothing that I actually started enjoying myself. I loved it when they started beating on each other 🤷
I think it's really weird that before this channel I had _never_ heard of Quantum Leap. I live in Canada, we get a lot of U.S. shows! Additionally, I consider myself something of a _fanfiction connoisseur_ - I've seen some _really_ good (like, publishing-worthy), and some _really_ bad.
...*siiiigh*... I'll clear up some space on my bookshelf I GUESS 9.9 But seriously, thanks! :D I like this show a lot but I need to watch more of it >.>;; but I love big dramatic -fanfics- novels that expand upon tv shows and can get away with more than the show does! And luckily those kinds of things tend to not be too expensive I don't think. Some of these definitely caught my attention! And now I kinda know which ones not to bother with if I happen to find them. I was gonna ask something QL related but forgot... I'll leave another comment when I remember.
Forget Sam leaping into a cryptid hunt, have him leap INTO a cryptid.
♫Stuck in the middle with you!♫
7:45 The Loch Ness Monster doesn't eat the guy. The monster just leans in, and right after Sam leaps out, he asks him for tree-fitty.

I introduced a “rogue leaper” who was trying to restore history back to the way it was before Sam or the evil leapers began changing everything. It was building up to something catastrophic.
I loved the rogue leaper storyline! The virtual seasons were great.
Excellent, I look forward to reading it!
"Incest"? We're all distant cousins; anyway.
I have read a few of them and enjoyed them
What did you think of the Quantum Leap comics?
They're fun, though short so the stories usually don't dig deep enough for me. Really enjoyed the one where they're waiting at a gas station and just chatting. I also laughed at the one where he leaps into an alien.
Sam leaps into an alien?! I need to find this comic right the fuck now, actually right the fuck yesterday.
Comics?! Ooooooooooooooo!
I rate this video Shiny/10
No books n the Evil Leaper project?
Wait, wait, wait... you write fanfiction? For what? Where is it? I must know!
Anywhere we could read your fanfics by chance, Allison?
😊and you know about fanfiction 😜
Oh gosh😳 um I write fanfiction 😅👋(it’s um I have a bit of obsession with crossovers 😂)
Your dress is very Jessica 6 from Logan's Run.
Is it just me or is the picture of Al on the cover of Too Close For Comfort the exact same pose as the lint portrait of Dean Stockwell?
Probably to long ago to get an answer but do you have a list of all the books? I have about 7
Double or Nothing almost sounds like a mirror universe thing.
Foreknowledge reminds me of Lovecraft's The Shadow out of Time.
I heard new Quantum Leap isn't that good are you going to do anything about that like do any videos about the new leap
I very much agree with your take on Mirror's Edge. I was enjoying it well enough right up until the last 3 chapters - woooow
OTOH it wasn't until the last 3 chapters of Double or Nothing that I actually started enjoying myself. I loved it when they started beating on each other 🤷
I assume you've read the comics?
I like the one wear he plays an alien
I think it's really weird that before this channel I had _never_ heard of Quantum Leap. I live in Canada, we get a lot of U.S. shows!
Additionally, I consider myself something of a _fanfiction connoisseur_ - I've seen some _really_ good (like, publishing-worthy), and some _really_ bad.
Did Allison do this video on the same day she and Brad saw Ninja Turtles 2? I recognize the blouse.
You write fanfic? Can we have links?
...so does anyone else think the woman on the cover of Obsessions looks like Allison?
...*siiiigh*... I'll clear up some space on my bookshelf I GUESS 9.9
But seriously, thanks!
